How Reshoring Impacts Economy And Transportation Logistics- A Us Perspective, Md Sarder
How Reshoring Impacts Economy And Transportation Logistics- A Us Perspective, Md Sarder
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Reshoring is a relatively new trend across the world, particularly in developed nations like the US and European countries. Its impact on the economy and transportation and logistics is expected to be significant. However, there is a lack of research on the reasons behind companies' decision to reshore, the major players involved, the economic implications, and how to align transportation for maximum benefit. To address this gap, a study was conducted using location quotients, which compare the economic composition of smaller areas to a base geographical area. Two datasets were used: the US Census Bureau's County Business Patterns employment dataset …

5g Opportunities In Warehousing, Roshan George, Natalie S. Cherbaka, Kimberly Ellis
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
As capabilities of fifth generation wireless technology (5G) improve, adoption will go beyond current urban cellular networks into industrial settings enabling the IoT landscape. 5G primarily delivers value by enhancing mobile broadband through ultra-reliable, low-latency signals and massive machine-type communications. With the concurrent development of 5G and industrial automation, replacing Wi-Fi and LTE services with 5G networks offers an opportunity to enhance scheduling, latency, jitters, and redundancy in demanding applications. Additionally, the equipment redesigns and upgrades to operate in 5G will pave the way for innovation in operational strategies previously constrained by network capabilities. In this paper, we consider the …
Concepts For The Use Of Knowledge-Based Engineering In Intralogistics System Planning, Christian Landschützer, Alexander Ortner-Pichler
Concepts For The Use Of Knowledge-Based Engineering In Intralogistics System Planning, Christian Landschützer, Alexander Ortner-Pichler
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Complex interdependencies of conditions and specifications to be met characterize the planning process of intralogistics systems. In the planning process, a large source of existing knowledge in the form of various 3D CAD machine designs or information from PDM systems is only sparsely used. A newly developed knowledge-based engineering methodology to be presented shows concepts for formalizing, enriching and using this existing knowledge in order to support the planning of intralogistics plants and thus increase their efficiency. The work presented is rounded off by a methodological process that evaluates the usefulness of using a KBE solution.
Performance Analysis Of Unequal Area Facility Layout Problem When Superimposed By Load Transport And Empty Flow Networks, Ardavan Asef-Vaziri, Cory Taylor
Performance Analysis Of Unequal Area Facility Layout Problem When Superimposed By Load Transport And Empty Flow Networks, Ardavan Asef-Vaziri, Cory Taylor
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Given the area of the workcenters and the required loaded flow matrix between pairs of workcenters, the unequal facility layout problem (UA-FLP) is concerned with a continuous model for the arrangement of the workcenters under a loaded flow-distance objective function. In UA-FLP models, distances are measured between the centroids of the workcenters on arbitrary bidirectional free rectilinear flow paths. While these assumptions may work for gantry cranes, they are far from reality for vehiclebased material transport systems. In this study, starting from the block layouts obtained under the UA-FLP assumptions, we move towards superimposing them by material transport networks and …
A Novel Autonomous Vehicle-Based Storage And Retrieval System With Movable Lifts, Banu Yetkin Ekren, Tone Lerher, Boris Jerman
A Novel Autonomous Vehicle-Based Storage And Retrieval System With Movable Lifts, Banu Yetkin Ekren, Tone Lerher, Boris Jerman
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
This paper presents a novel autonomous vehicle-based storage and retrieval system with movable lifts (AVS/RS/ML) as an alternative automated warehousing technology to tier-captive shuttle-based storage and retrieval systems (SBS/RS). The proposed system aims to provide a cost-effective, highly efficient, and adaptable solution for warehouse operations utilizing automated guided vehicles (AGVs) capable of travelling both inside and outside the warehouse. We simulate and analyse the system's performance based on its initial investment cost, throughput capacity, and average utilization of AGVs and movable lifts (MLs) under different warehouse designs.
Introducing The Central Backup Cellular Manufacturing System (Cbcms), Salah Elaskari, Uday Venkatadri
Introducing The Central Backup Cellular Manufacturing System (Cbcms), Salah Elaskari, Uday Venkatadri
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
In this paper, we present a new layout arrangement that we call the central backup cellular manufacturing systems (CBCMS). The CBCMS organization is inspired by the concept of the remainder cell in Group technology (GT) systems where the idea is to allocate products that are not easily partitioned in the parts-machine incidence matrix to the remainder cell through a cell that contains all process capabilities. The fractal cell layout can be thought of as replications of the remainder cell in the GT concept. The GT layout represents an efficient approach under certain static conditions, while the fractal layout represents a …

Warehouse Robotization With Wheel.Me Genius: A Puzzle-Based Movable Racks System, Fabio Sgarbossa, Martin Amaral Halseide, Atle Timenes
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
In this paper, we first introduce a new type of warehouse which combines the properties and operations of puzzle-based storage systems and robotic mobile fulfillment. Thanks to a long-term collaboration between the Logistics 4.0 Lab at NTNU and wheel.me, we have introduced and explored a new configuration called Puzzle-Based Movable Rack (PBMR) system where racks can be moved with autonomous wheels. One additional advantage of such system is that movable racks can move diagonally. We model and analyze the system studying different configurations and showing the impact on density and average cycle time/throughput. We finally introduce potential future research for …
Considerations When Designing An Autostoretm System, Russell D. Meller
Considerations When Designing An Autostoretm System, Russell D. Meller
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Designing an AutoStoreTM system is a complex undertaking with many interacting decision variables. In this paper we first provide a detailed description of an AutoStore system from the perspective of the main components of the system. We then define the design problem by stipulating the design requirements and decision variables. We then discuss how the decision variables impact the objective function. In so doing we provide many avenues for quantitative modeling by the research community.

Modeling Post-Disruption Equilibrium For Circular Supply Chains And New Measures For Resilience, Sangwoo Park, Ilaria Giannoccaro, Layek Abdel-Malek
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Among concerns on sustainability and environmental protection, there is a growing interest in the adoption of circular supply chains (CSCs). This work introduces a firstcut approach to capturing the resilience of supply chains and their components related to material handling. We develop a methodology for computing the new equilibrium states after disruptions and use this to measure the resilience of circular supply chains. Numerical simulations illustrating our concept are performed on a synthetic toy-example. In addition, we introduce a secondary measure of resilience that encapsulates the transient stages of a supply chain after disruption. This measure is able to highlight …

Robotic Bin-Picking: Benchmarking Robotics Grippers With Modified Ycb Object And Model Set, Tone Lerher, Primož Bencak, Darko Hercog, Boris Jerman, Luka Bizjak
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Robotic bin-picking is increasingly important in the order-picking process in intralogistics. However, many aspects of the robotic bin-picking process (object detection, grasping, manipulation) still require the research community's attention. Established methods are used to test robotic grippers, enabling comparability of the research community's results. This study presents a modified YCB Robotic Gripper Assessment Protocol that was used to evaluate the performance of four robotic grippers (two-fingered, vacuum, gecko, and soft gripper). During the testing, 45 objects from the modified YCB Object and Model Set from the packaging categories, tools, small objects, spherical objects, and deformable objects were grasped and manipulated. …
An Efficient Milp Formulation For The Parallel Load Retrieval In Puzzle Based Storage Systems With Simultaneous Load Movements, Yossi Bukchin, Tal Raviv
An Efficient Milp Formulation For The Parallel Load Retrieval In Puzzle Based Storage Systems With Simultaneous Load Movements, Yossi Bukchin, Tal Raviv
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Puzzle-based storage (PBS) is one of the most spaceefficient types of storage systems. In a PBS unit, loads are stored in a grid of cells, where each cell may be empty or contain a load. A load can move only to adjacent empty cells using four-way conveyors. When loads are requested for retrieval, a sequence of load movements is performed in order to bring them to the input/output (I/O) points of the unit. In this paper, we present a time-expanded-graph based integer-linear-programming (MILP) formulation that aims to minimize the time to retrieve a set of target loads (makespan). Note that …
Designs Of Puzzle Based Storage Systems With Unidimensional Cells, Hector J. Carlo, Andres Blanco
Designs Of Puzzle Based Storage Systems With Unidimensional Cells, Hector J. Carlo, Andres Blanco
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
A paradigm for puzzle-based storage systems (PBS) is that all cells have the capacity of transporting loads horizontally and vertically. This research challenges this paradigm by considering unidimensional PBS, where some cells are limited to either horizontal or vertical movements. PBS with some unidimensional cells are referred to as unidimensional PBS. A linear program (LP) formulation is presented to find the optimal load retrieval path using a single-escort in a unidimensional PBS. The LP is solved recursively to understand the tradeoffs of unidimensional designs for a 4×4 system. It is concluded that unidimensional PBS can be designed such that the …
Current Challenges And Approaches In Route Selection Of A Fleet Of Amr, Thorsten Schmidt, Karl-Benedikt Reith, Frank Schulze
Current Challenges And Approaches In Route Selection Of A Fleet Of Amr, Thorsten Schmidt, Karl-Benedikt Reith, Frank Schulze
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
With the trend in intralogistics from Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) to free ranging Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR), vehicle-based transportation systems further in-crease their flexibility, scalability and performance. However, these benefits come at the cost of an increase in complexity caused by the AMRs’ high degree of freedom, e.g. when it comes to the determination of routes. In addition to manifold approaches to the selection of a global route and the avoidance of local routing con-flicts with other vehicles, this paper discusses the idea of applying a set of offline defined rules. Lowering the AMRs’ degree of free-dom, these rules enable …
Rcs/Rs Under Throughput Investigation, Georg Kartnig Prof., Philipp Trost, Michael Eder
Rcs/Rs Under Throughput Investigation, Georg Kartnig Prof., Philipp Trost, Michael Eder
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
RCS/RS are fully autonomous by robots from above-operated storage systems. The goods are stored in plastic containers stacked on each other and arranged in a block, which enables high storage densities and low space demand concomitant with the need for relocations to access deeper stored containers. E-commerce, pharmaceutical area, food or spare parts trade are typical application fields for those warehouses. A wide range of parameters, such as the number of robots, the filling degree or the stack height, influences the system’s performance. This paper gains insights into the throughput of RCS/R-systems with one operating robot serving one picking station …

A Study On The Correlation Between The Study Habits Of Nursing Students And Perceived Exam Anxiety, Rebecca A. Bracken
Honors College Theses
Anxiety is a concept very familiar to many university students. This especially applies to students who have decided to major in nursing. With the knowledge and experiences that accompany attending nursing school, come a series of rigorous, high-stakes exams. Nationwide, many students share a common struggle to be successful on these exams, which often leads to a sense of anxiety that becomes associated with one's experience during testing, known as test anxiety. A study across multiple baccalaureate nursing school cohorts was completed to determine a correlation between the various methods used by nursing students to prepare for an exam and …
