Supply Chain Disruptors And Their Impact On The Future Of Manufacturing, Logistics, And Distribution, Henk M. Zijm, Sunderesh S. Heragu
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
In this paper, we outline some of the changes occurring in the world and how businesses are adapting to these changes. We also list disruptors – factors or new ideas that disrupt the status quo – and their impact on manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, and distribution.

A Fluid Flow Queuing Network Model For Performance Analysis Of Bulk Liquid Terminals, Debjit Roy, Werner Scheinhardt, Jan-Kees Van Ommeren
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Bulk liquid terminals play a crucial role in enabling the timely discharge and loading of liquid from the tankers and also facilitating oil transport to the hinterland via pipelines and external trucks. However, the speed of operations (and demurrage costs in the likely event of vessel handling delays) depends on the capacities of all terminal resources including berth, loading arms, and storage tank farms. Today, there is a limited understanding of how the interactions among the resources affect the overall vessel sojourn time performance. Using an integrated fluid flow simulation model of a bulk liquid terminal, we are able to …

Evaluating Business Service Models For On-Demand Warehousing: A Double Perspective On Suppliers And Customers, Maria Grazia Gnoni, Fabiana Tornese
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
The on-demand warehousing model is emerging as a logistic solution based on resource sharing for businesses needing storage space. This model provides a business-to-business marketplace where companies can provide (or request) storage and other logistic services with a high level of flexibility. However, literature is still scarce on the topic, and while the potential advantages of such model are quite clear, its main criticalities need to be explored. Based on a market analysis of platforms currently providing on-demand warehousing opportunities, this work present a first discussion on the advantages and limitations of the model for customers and lenders.

Buy-Online-Pickup-In-Store (BOPIS), also known as Click-and-Collect, are services where customers place their orders online and then travel to pick up their requested items at a pre-determined local location. This provides convenience to shoppers and eliminates the retailer’s last-mile delivery costs associated with home delivery. Yet, such omnichannel services shift the responsibility for the order fulfillment process to the retailer, whereas with in-store shoppers, the order fulfillment task is completed by shoppers themselves. Further, because of customers’ short response time expectations, it is typically infeasible for a retailer to conduct this order fulfillment process for click-and-collect orders at distribution centers located …
Working Together- Scheduling Operations In Assisted Order Picking, Jelmer Pier Van Der Gaast
Working Together- Scheduling Operations In Assisted Order Picking, Jelmer Pier Van Der Gaast
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Warehouse operations are becoming increasingly competitive due to the rise of e-commerce and same-day deliveries. To increase operational productivity, it is important to organize order picking as efficiently as possible. A new technology that is relatively cheap is assisted order picking (AOP). AOP involves human order pickers and pick robots working together to ensure customer orders are picked. It is easy to apply, does not require a major reconfiguration of the whole warehouse, and is scalable. In this paper, two variants of AOP are studied, and a mathematical optimization model is developed to minimize the makespan of picking a wave …
Optimization Of Cargo Handling Equipment At The Airport, David Sourek
Optimization Of Cargo Handling Equipment At The Airport, David Sourek
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Delaying an aircraft during ground handling costs the airline a lot of money. In critical situations, it is even possible that some flights have to be canceled due to delays. It is therefore the endeavor of all personnel involved in ground operations that they proceed without delay. This paper shows what methods can be used to optimize the required number of handling equipment and what can affect its number.

Transportation Service Provider Collaboration: Benefits And Insights, Steven Roesch, Kimberly Ellis
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Truck-based freight transportation in the United States is expected to remain an integral part of the economy for the foreseeable future. Despite its continued importance, the industry remains fragmented and economically, socially, and environmentally unsustainable. The focus of this research is exploring opportunities to reduce costs and increase sustainability through collaboration among transportation service providers (TSPs). The objective is to explore freight routing and consolidation decisions for collaborating transportation service providers, introduce the transportation service provider collaboration problem (TSP-CP), and evaluate the potential benefits of TSP collaboration using industry representative data sets. The results provide new insights on the benefits …
Designing Facilities To Improve Flexibility: Zone-Based Dynamic Facility Layout, Sadan Kulturel-Konak, Abdullah Konak
Designing Facilities To Improve Flexibility: Zone-Based Dynamic Facility Layout, Sadan Kulturel-Konak, Abdullah Konak
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
This paper considers solving the unequal area Dynamic Facility Layout Problem (DFLP) using a zone-based structure. Zone-based layouts have significant advantages, such as being easily transferable to a detailed layout with innately included possible aisle structures; therefore, they can be fitted to the unique needs of the layout designers. The unequal area DFLP is modeled and solved using a zone-based structure, which is referred to as ZDFLP, where the dimensions of the departments and material handling system input/output (I/O) points are decision variables. A two-phase matheuristic, which directly operates on Problem ZDFLP without requiring an encoding scheme of the problem, …
Toward Architecture Design For Discrete Event Logistics Systems, Leon Mcginnis
Toward Architecture Design For Discrete Event Logistics Systems, Leon Mcginnis
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
The scope and scale of contemporary discrete event logistics systems (DELS), such as parcel logistics hubs, distribution centers, and global manufacturing systems, continues to outpace the traditional industrial engineering approach to facilities and system design, particularly with regard to system architecture. System architecture is fundamental to system design in most engineering disciplines. While not part of the traditional DELS design portfolio, the ingredients are available today to support system engineering architecture design methods and tools for application to DELS design.
On Logistics And Motion Planning - An Informal Axiomatic Approach, Moritz Roidl
On Logistics And Motion Planning - An Informal Axiomatic Approach, Moritz Roidl
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Through the introduction of an informal axiomatic framework, this paper aims to contribute to the development of a general theory of logistics, which is currently still a blindspot in logistics research. It aims to combine the precision of robotic motion planning concepts with established logistics terminology, forging a link that balances the robustness of a mathematically rigorous theory with the rich semantic understanding inherent in logistics models. Centered around the notion of designing a logistic space, a possible way of structuring this space by grid-based and continuous spatial structures is discussed. The axiomatic framework is extended to include a new …
Requirements For Generating Learning Environments For Autonomous Systems Behavior In A Digital Continuum, Anike Murrenhoff
Requirements For Generating Learning Environments For Autonomous Systems Behavior In A Digital Continuum, Anike Murrenhoff
16th IMHRC Proceedings (Dresden, Germany- 2023)
Autonomous systems in material handling are increasingly prevalent in logistics, offering benefits such as flexibility, adaptability, robustness, and sustainability. To fully harness these advantages, a novel paradigm, the Digital Continuum, is proposed for the development and operation of such systems. A critical component of the Digital Continuum is a deeply integrated digital system model, which serves as a simulation, training, and test environment for virtual agents corresponding to physical robots. To ensure robust performance in learned behavior, a large number of learning environments is needed, thus highlighting the importance of an automated generation process. This process can significantly reduce modeling …
