Can Distance And Classroom Learning Be Increased?, Richard Hake

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Professor Scott Overmyer of Baker College, in a discussion list post, raised four points bearing on a question of interest to those involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Can Distance and Classroom Learning Be Increased? My answer: “YES” - judging from the fact that pre/post testing in courses in Newtonian mechanics has demonstrated an approximately two-standard-deviation superiority in average normalized gains for classroom “interactive engagement” methods over “traditional” classroom methods. Similarly, pre/post testing might demonstrate a substantive superiority over traditional classroom teaching for both classroom and distance education that recognize recent advances in cognitive science and …

Women are significantly underrepresented in the hard sciences and engineering. While the number of women seeking degrees in these fields has increased in the last forty years, a substantial gap still exists between the sexes. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine one area of influence on career choice -- the curriculum. Women scientists are underrepresented in the school curriculum. This dissertation examines the discourse of curriculum and the role it has in the gendering of the field of science. The nature of the development of a curriculum lends itself to the practice of exclusion. The construction of curriculum …

Optimal Science Lab Design: Impacts Of Various Components Of Lab Design On Students’ Attitudes Toward Lab, John Basey, Loren Sackett, Natalie Robinson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Variations in science lab design can differentially impact student learning. Quantification of these differential impacts can be used in modeling – an approach we term “optimal lab design.” In this study we estimated relative influences of six characteristics of lab design on students’ attitudes toward science labs in three different first-year college biology lab courses (USA). We used two end-of-semester surveys. The first had students choose their favorite and least favorite lab and answer questions associated with the six characteristics and their choices. Excerpt: In this short invited essay I want to raise some concerns about positioning scholarship on teaching and learning within the disciplines. As this journal and others attest, not all pedagogical work is located there, but with the recent interest in scholarly work on teaching and learning there has been an accompanying move to more firmly wed pedagogical scholarship to the disciplines (Healey 2000). I’d like to begin with what is lost when the preference is for pedagogical scholarship owned by the disciplines.

Overcoming Student Resistance To A Teaching Innovation, Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt, Adalet Baris Gunersel, Nancy Simpson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This mixed-methods study investigated student perceptions of an innovative educational tool and the instructor strategies that helped change initial student resistance into acceptance and engagement. The educational tool in this study is Calibrated Peer Review (CPR)™, a web-based program that uses writing as a learning and assessment tool. Evaluations of CPR were analyzed from students in a general chemistry course over seven semesters involving 1515 students. Analysis revealed reasons for students’ like or dislike of CPR and how the instructor modified implementation to provide students a more positive experience. Inducible Chemical Defenses In Temperate Reef Sponges Of The South Atlantic Bight, U.S.A., Leslie Vanesa Sarmiento

Sessile organisms employing inducible defenses may receive protection from consumers while simultaneously minimizing the metabolic costs of maintaining these defenses. To investigate if reef sponges in the South Atlantic Bight employ inducible chemical defenses, I tested two predictions with Ircinia campana, I. felix, and Aplysina fulva. First, concentrations of antipredator compounds should covary with the abundance of sponge predators. Second, higher compound concentrations should be more effective at deterring predators. Secondary metabolite concentrations in two (I. campana and I. felix) of the sponge species showed temporal variation, which is consistent with the inducible defense hypothesis. Excerpt: A few years ago I attended a Faculty Development Conference sponsored by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. One of the keynote addresses was given by Dr. Robert Weisbuch, President of Drew University. At the time of the conference, Dr. Weisbuch was the President of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and his talk focused on the role of liberal arts in higher education. Throughout his talk he paraphrased a quote from William Wordsworth. Dr. Weisbuch words were “Others will love what we have loved, and we must teach them.” I had never heard that quote before and …

Research questions are shaped, explicitly or implicitly, by the theories we bring to bear upon our scholarship. Broadening our theoretical perspectives allows us to frame richer, deeper questions about the teaching and learning happening in our classrooms. This paper explicates the research implications of three broad theories of learning (constructivist, socio-cultural, and complexivist), exploring what scholarship framed by each theory might look like and some of the strengths and limitations of each framework. The authors use their experience engaging in research on teaching and learning in an undergraduate interdisciplinary science program to illustrate the argument that changing theories can help …

The distribution of mammals in a savanna environment is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. The African savanna experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. Species become spatially restricted around water resources during the dry season, resulting in increased intraspecies and interspecies resource-based aggregation. A dominate species, such as the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), may influence this aggregation. I examined the influence of wet and dry seasons and ambient temperature on the use of a waterhole by elephants as well as the co-occurrence of elephants and other mammals at the waterhole. Use Of Trees By The Texas Ratsnake (Elaphe Obsoleta) In Eastern Texas, Josh B. Pierce, Robert R. Fleet, Lance D. Mcbrayer, D. Craig Rudolph

We present information on the use of trees by Elaphe obsoleta (Texas Ratsnake) in a mesic pine-hardwood forest in eastern Texas. Using radiotelemetry, seven snakes (3 females, 4 males) were relocated a total of 363 times from April 2004 to May 2005, resulting in 201 unique locations. Snakes selected trees containing cavities and used hardwoods and snags for a combined 95% of arboreal locations. Texas Ratsnake arboreal activity peaked during July and August, well after the peak of avian breeding activity, suggesting arboreal activity involves factors other than avian predation.

Aquaporin 3 Water Channel Protein Gene Expression In Squalis Acanthias Dogfish Shark, Debra Lee Murray

Aquaporins are a family of membrane proteins that provide channels for the rapid movement of water molecules and some small solutes across the cellular membrane. Since the discovery of the first water channel protein, hundreds of homologous proteins have been found in all forms of life and much has been learned about their complex role in body water homeostasis. This is the first study to use molecular and immunological techniques to demonstrate that an orthologue of mammalian AQP3 is present in the epithelial cells of Squalus acanthias dogfish shark kidney, gills, rectal gland, esophagus, stomach, eye and brain.
