Aquaporin 3 Water Channel Protein Gene Expression In Squalis Acanthias Dogfish Shark, Debra Lee Murray

Aquaporins are a family of membrane proteins that provide channels for the rapid movement of water molecules and some small solutes across the cellular membrane. Since the discovery of the first water channel protein, hundreds of homologous proteins have been found in all forms of life and much has been learned about their complex role in body water homeostasis. This is the first study to use molecular and immunological techniques to demonstrate that an orthologue of mammalian AQP3 is present in the epithelial cells of Squalus acanthias dogfish shark kidney, gills, rectal gland, esophagus, stomach, eye and brain. The Human Immunodeficiency Disease (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) have reached an epidemic proportion in many African American communities. There is a significant amount of stigma and denial associated with HIV/AIDS in these communities, leaving people with minimal knowledge about this disease. Caretakers such as grandparents, other relatives, and foster parents take on the role of surrogate parents to these children who have lost one or both of their parents to HIV/AIDS. When family members, especially women, die from this disease leaving their offspring behind these children often experience various emotional and behavioral problems. A few of the children …

Phylogenetic Relationships Within Coleeae (Bignoniaceae Juss.), Andreina Carvajal

On Madagascar, Bignoniaceae is represented by tribes Coleeae (4 genera/58 species) and Tecomeae (4 genera/15 species). Species of Coleeae occur in assemblages of sympatric, locally endemic species. The purpose of this study was to explore the phylogenetic relationships within Coleeae. In order to do so, techniques such as PCR by using universal primers for waxy nuclear gene, agarose electrophoresis, cloning and sequencing were performed. A total of 26 taxa were successfully amplified. Sequences were analyzed using three different phylogenetic programs (Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis) resulting in various phylogenetic trees. Acid-base regulation is a vital mechanism in homeostasis. Fish must maintain optimal physiological acid-base parameters during changes in an aquatic habitat. Environmental factors such as changes in salinity affect fish ability to maintain optimal blood plasma ion concentrations. Ion regulation influences the fish ability to maintain optimal acid-base balance. The Na+/H+ Exchanger-3 (NHE-3) has been shown to be the primary membrane ion transporter responsible for acid-base balance in the mammalian kidney. The objective of this study is to characterize NHE-3 in the gills of longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecimspinosus).

This research involved a survey of the distribution and reproductive biology of the threatened southeastern subspecies of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius paulus). Numbers of Southeastern American Kestrels are estimated to have declined by more than 80% over the last fifty years in the southeastern United States. In Georgia, populations have nearly disappeared below the Fall Line. The paucity of adequate nest sites is the major factor contributing to the decline of this obligate secondary cavity nester. Small Mammal Habitat Associations In A Fragmented Agricultural Landscape, William Wall Hamrick

The purpose of this research was to examine how small mammals select habitats in a fragmented agricultural landscape in southeast Georgia. I captured small mammals at 71 trap sites within 33 locations in Bulloch and Candler Counties, Georgia. Prior to trapping, each site was classified based on predominant habitat type. Within each trap site, habitat variables were quantified for capture and non-capture trap stations. Using GPS and ArcMap GIS, I quantified surrounding land cover associated with each trap site. This study was conducted to examine perceptions about information technology management of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in higher education who have previously worked outside that environment. Participants from the University System of Georgia and from universities in the Southern Regional Education Board were interviewed. They had a variety of backgrounds outside higher education, including corporate, military, not-for-profit, and small business. Using critical race theory (Crenshaw, Gotanda, Peller, & Thomas, 1995; Delgado & Stefancic, 1995, 2001; Ladson-Billings, 1998) as the theoretical framework and narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) as the research methodology, this study explored the stories of 4 African American males to discover how race, class, and tracking affected their higher education opportunities. Participants were selected based upon their chosen curriculum; 2 participants represented a college preparatory curriculum, and represented a technical preparatory curriculum. In oviparous vertebrates, the maternal transfer of steroid hormones to egg yolk can vary among species, within and among clutches, seasonally, due to age, and in response to social and environmental cues. In previous studies, significant effects on hatchling phenotype, sex and survival have been attributed to a variation in egg yolk hormone levels. The differential allocation of yolk hormones in sea turtles, multiple clutching oviparous reptiles with a high reproductive output and temperature dependent sexdetermination (TSD), has yet to be investigated. Inference On Overlapping Coefficients In Two Exponential Populations, Mohammad F. Al-Saleh, Hani M. Samawi

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

Three measures of overlap, namely Matusita’s measureρ , Morisita’s measure λ and Weitzman’s measure Δ are investigated in this article for two exponential populations with different means. It is well that the estimators of those measures of overlap are biased. The bias is of these estimators depends on the unknown overlap parameters. There are no closed-form, exact formulas, for those estimators variances or their exact sampling distributions. Monte Carlo evaluations are used to study the bias and precision of the proposed overlap measures. Bootstrap method and Taylor series approximation are used to construct confidence intervals for the overlap measures.
