Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman

The Coastal Review

This article utilizes principles of ecological criticism to provide new readings of both the role and presentation of nature in José Eustasio Rivera’s novel La vorágine. Whereas critics have heretofore focused on Rivera’s memorable subjective descriptions of the Amazon jungle, the present study foregrounds the rich diversity of the real organisms represented in these depictions. In addition, this essay explores the connections between the text’s core trope, chaos, and the current ecological and social scientific understanding of the ecology and the human history of the Amazon Basin.

Josh Heath Named 2011 PBC Male Scholar-Athlete Of The Year. Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball player Josh Heath was named the Peach Belt Conference 2010-11 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the league's annual meetings in Hilton Head. Heath was chosen by the conference's Faculty Athletics Representatives, who looked at information on each candidate and based their vote on 50% academic accomplishment, 30% athletic achievement and 20% leadership qualities. The scholar-athlete award is the highest individual award presented by the Peach Belt.

Acting on the belief that art communicates, that an image speaks all languages, these works were created as a visual manifesto responding satirically to the absurd way in which myths are elevated to the status of moral values. The photographic works created for this thesis challenge long held beliefs and emotions that associate sex with shame and guilt, and that grow out of the moral traditions we have inherited. Resulting from an imbalance between training stress and recovery, the manifestation of overtraining is unique to each individual, with deviations in physiological, psychological, and performance variables. This thesis paper examines the use of natural forms to metaphorically represent human bonds in my creation of the series of works for my MFA Thesis Exhibition based on interacting relationships between plants. My images focus on parasitic plants, as a metaphor for restrictive and binding aspects of human relationships. The following cross-sectional quantitative study examined the characteristics of effective teachers based on the perceptions of upper level secondary school students and secondary school administrators. The researcher created a 25 statement Likert like survey developed as a result of the literature and modified using Charlotte Danielsons' Framework for Teaching as a basis. Five domains were established and five statements covered each of the five domains. The surveys were completed by 461 upper level secondary school students and 54 secondary school administrators, and descriptive statistics provided the top five characteristics of effective teachers as perceived by upper level secondary school students, …
