Genotypic And Phenotypic Variation Of The Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus Woodi), Derek B. Tucker

In my 1st chapter I investigate the phenotypic variation of the Florida scrub lizard by examining sprinting and jumping ability. These are key performance measures that have been widely studied in vertebrates. The vast majority of these studies, however, use methodologies that lack ecological context by failing to consider the complex habitats many animals live in. Here, I filmed running lizards to address how behavioral and performance strategies change as lizards approach obstacles of varying height. Obstacle size had a significant influence on both behavior (e.g. obstacle crossing strategy, intermittent locomotion) and performance (e.g. sprint speed, jump distance). Researchers should …

House flies (Musca domestica L), feed and breed in decomposing organic waste and therefore are constantly in contact with different species of microorganisms. Because house flies live in close proximity to human and animal habitats, they pose a danger of transmitting pathogenic microorganisms from diseased sources to new environments. To elucidate pathogen vector potential of house flies, this study investigated dose-dependent survivability of GFPexpressing Streptococcus pyogenes and Salmonella typhimurium SR11 within the fly alimentary canal both spatially via epifluorescence microscopy and quantitatively via culture-recovery. Predator prey interactions have the potential to shape patterns of natural selection. For prey, avoiding detection by predators is of primary importance; however prey species risk detection by movement. Other than crypsis, prey species also use secondary defenses when detected by a predator. The most common secondary defense is flight. Flight initiation distance describes the distance between a prey item and a predator where the benefits of fleeing outweigh the benefits of remaining stationary. There are many factors that influence flight initiation distance including ontogenetic stage, ability to escape, and the degree of crypsis. Of these, the ontogenetic effects on …

Instructors' Decisions That Integrate Inquiry Teaching Into Undergraduate Courses: How Do I Make This Fit?, Iris Alkaher, Erin Dolan

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this qualitative study, we describe and characterize the pedagogical decisions that three college instructors made to mitigate challenges they faced as they taught by inquiry, as well as the rationale for their decisions and their perceptions of the efficacy of their decisions. We found that instructors made a range of decisions, including reorganizing course content and structure, adding more opportunities for and models of inquiry practice, adding more opportunities for feedback and assessment, and enhancing scaffolding of the inquiry. Notably, single instructional decisions had the capacity to mitigate multiple challenges. The instructors were satisfied with many of their decisions, …

Revealing Student Thinking About Experimental Design And The Roles Of Control Experiments, Jia Shi, Joy M. Power, Michael W. Klymkowsky

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Well-designed “controls” distinguish experimental from non-experimental studies. Surprisingly, we found that a high percentage of students had difficulty identifying control experiments even after completing three university-level laboratory courses. To address this issue, we designed and ran a revised cell biology lab course in which students participated in weekly “experimental control exercises.” To measure student understanding of control experiments, we developed a set of assessment questions; these were given to students prior to and following completion of either a standard cell biology lab course or the revised cell biology lab course. Course-Embedded Mentoring For First-Year Students: Melding Academic Subject Support With Role Modeling, Psycho-Social Support, And Goal Setting - Ta, Jim Henry, Holly Bruland, Jennifer Sano-Franchini

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This article examines a mentoring initiative that embedded advanced students in first-year composition courses to mentor students to excel to the best of their abilities. Mentors attended all classes along with students and conducted many out-of-class individual conferences, documenting each of them using program-implemented work logs. Four hundred four first-year students provided end-of-term anonymous feedback on standardized forms, which were transcribed, digitized, and tabulated for analysis. Analysis showed that the mentoring was effective in providing the four constructs key to mentoring as identified by Nora and Crisp (2008): psychological/emotional support; support for setting goals and choosing a career path; academic …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

From 1999 to 2007, the Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center focused on improving bioengineering education through the applications of learning science, learning technology, and assessment and evaluation within the domain of bioengineering. This paper discusses results from a survey to explore the impact of the VaNTH experience on participating faculty and postdoctoral professionals. The results note that respondents differed in their familiarity with and applications of dimensions of the “How People Learn” framework and in their operationalization of effective instruction after their participation in VaNTH. Implications for teaching and learning with the context of a Center model are discussed along …

Testosterone (T) is thought to affect a variety of traits important for fitness, including coloration, the size of sexual ornaments, aggression, and locomotor performance. Here, we investigated the effects of experimentally elevated T and locomotor training on muscle physiology and running performance in a nonterritorial male lizard species (Aspidoscelis sexlineata). Additionally, several morphological attributes were quantified to examine other characters that are likely affected by T and/or a training regimen. Neither training alone nor training with T supplementation resulted in increased locomotor performance. Instead, we found that T and training resulted in a decrease in each of three …

Sodium hydrogen exchanger proteins (NHEs) are members of the cation proton antiporter superfamily (CPA) and are thought to function in fish for maintaining physiological ion concentrations and acid-base balances by excreting excess H+ ions from the body in exchange for Na+ ions. There are many more types of these proteins in teleost fish than in mammals due to putative genome duplication. This study describes a new form of NHE2 in the gills of marine longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus, designated NHE2c. Sequencing revealed that the NHE2c nucleotide-coding region transcribes a peptide 795 amino acids in length with an estimated molecular weight …

Sedimentation can play an important role in shaping tropical and temperate benthic marine communities. Here, I quantified sedimentation rates on a hard-bottom reef in the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) off the coast of Georgia, USA and assessed its effects on a conspicuous member of the benthic community: the scleractinian coral, Oculina arbuscula. I addressed the predictions that: 1) inorganic and organic sedimentation rates vary in relation to wind speed and wave height in the SAB, 2) the ability of juvenile O. arbuscula to shed sediment depends on skeletal morphology, and 3) inorganic sedimentation reduces growth and survival of encrusting O. …

One of the over-arching goals of biology is to determine the relative importance of nature versus nurture. Nature versus nurture reflects the relative contribution of an individual's genetic makeup and environment to its growth and reproduction. In addition, the environment experienced by an individual's mother can also indirectly affect the performance of her offspring - these are environmental maternal effects (EME). For example, if a mother experiences a high quality environment, her offspring may respond with enhanced growth. We expect natural variation in habitat quality to lead to high levels of EME since mothers will vary in the environment they …
