Obesity results from a multitude of problems from depression, an imbalance in hormones, genetics, environmental factors, and can also result from a poor diet, where we are focusing our attention. A strong correlation is made with low income and obesity in children. In 2014, 14.5% of patients ages 2-4 were obese. From 2011 to 2014 17% of adolescents experienced obesity and this affects around 12.7 million people. Statistics have shown the as the age increases in adolescents, so does the prevalence of obesity.

With sugar consumption in the youth on the rise, many people have turned their heads towards this epidemic in response to the many side effects associated with excess sugar in the diet. Roughly 75% of all foods and beverages have some form of added sugar. It’s difficult to find a safe product for your child to eat without running into something like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Sugar-sweetened beverage intake has increased nearly 500% since 1950. This excessive sugar intake is very taxing on the body and may lead to long term impairments if not properly regulated. From Worldviews To Classrooms: Framing Evolution Acceptance In Pre-Service Science Teachers In The Southeastern United States, Amanda L. Glaze

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Research demonstrates that teachers' acceptance or rejection of evolution impacts whether they teach evolution in their classrooms. Furthermore, factors such as religiosity and nature of science understanding impact acceptance or rejection. What is absent from the literature is an exploration of experiences that inform choices made regarding acceptance or rejection, experiences that illuminate the counter-intuitive relationships demonstrated in quantitative studies. For this reason, we explore the lived experiences that inform the worldviews of Pre-Service Secondary Science Teachers (PSSTs) and how those worldviews might inform their acceptance or rejection of evolution. Using Photovoice With Adults With Developmental Disabilities To Measure Camp Goals, Haley Alexandra Allmond

Honors College Theses

This project addressed the perspectives of adults with developmental disabilities in a residential camp setting, with a particular focus on health beliefs. It involved 15 participants with a range of diagnoses in participatory action research using Photovoice, which is a technique that allows marginalized groups the ability to voice specific needs through photography. For the purposes of this project, subjects took photos and examined evidence of healthy living skills learned during the camp experience. After analyzing data collected, the researcher identified four separate definitions of health discussed by participants. Study findings suggest that the residential camp experience has a positive …
