Adherence Of Collegiate Level, Recreational/Intramural And Non-Athlete College Students To The Mediterranean Diet, Amber E. Ugbo

The Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in complex carbohydrates and plant-based foods, may be beneficial to athletic performance. To date, no one has examined adherence of collegiate athletes to a Mediterranean Diet. This study compared how closely collegiate, recreational/intramural, and non-athletes in college followed a Mediterranean Diet. Surveys and validated Mediterranean Diet score questionnaires were completed by 933 undergraduates in HLTH 1520: Healthful Living at Georgia Southern University. Participants self-reported following various diets including decreased or increased carbohydrate, increased protein, and increased water intake. No one specifically reported following a Mediterranean Diet and total calculated Mediterranean Diet scores were low …

In 1492, after Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand defeated the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula, they presented the Jewish community throughout their kingdoms with a choice: leaving or converting to Catholicism. The Spanish kingdoms had been anti-Jewish for centuries, forcing the creation of ghettos, the use of identifying clothing, etc. in an effort to isolate and “other” the Jews, who unsuccessfully sought peaceful co-existence. Those who did not accept expulsion, but converted, were the subject of further prejudice stemming from a belief that Jewish blood was tainted and that conversions were undertaken for financial gain. This research project studies how students’ perceptions, actions, and thoughts around contraceptive practices develop over time and through college. The literature addresses how the environment of college and American culture affects how women develop contraceptive practices that are convenient not only for their bodies but their schedules. Research focuses on how educational background, religion, culture, and relationships influence contraceptive choices among students, especially women. Social factors influencing availability of contraception and education about contraception potentially lead to confusion about the most effective ways to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy. Dermacentor variabilis, more commonly known as the wood tick, or the American dog tick, can be found all over North America. D. variabilis is a common tick in Bulloch county, Georgia, USA, and little is known about the population structure of this population of the species. Microsatellite markers are able to locate sections of the genome and can aid in estimating relatedness among individuals in a population. Six different oligonucleotide primer pairs were published for D. variabilis, however, published and non-published works indicated that not all of those primer pairs were working equally well for PCR. This presentation will model culturally responsive feedback in the writing classroom to repair trust and to motivate all students, particularly those who identify with underrepresented groups.The presenter will share experiences from the classroom and as college coordinator for WID program in a diverse, culturally rich area. Attendees will leave with an understanding of impediments to student success and new classroom practices to overcome negative outcomes associated with perceived bias, stereotype threat, and mistrust.

This course uses a combination of lecture, student discussion and independent research to review the fundamentals of cancer epidemiology including classic descriptive cancer epidemiology, basic cancer biology, etiology of common and uncommon human cancers, major and minor risk factors for cancer, screening techniques for early detection, cancer biomarkers, and current research in cancer epidemiology. Epidemiologic surveillance techniques including cancer registries and databases, international studies and intervention trials will also be covered.
