Cultural Aesthetic Experience: Perceptions Of Learning Developed Through Cultural Immersion, Nicole Renai Harper
Cultural Aesthetic Experience: Perceptions Of Learning Developed Through Cultural Immersion, Nicole Renai Harper
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study explored the role of cultural aesthetic expressions (often also referred to in this study as cultural arts) play in perceptions of learning while individuals are in the ongoing process of being immersed in a non-native culture. This inquiry focused specifically on the narratives of seven expatriates undergoing the process of cultural immersion in Germany, Slovenia and the United States. Using narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; He, Phillion & Connelly, 2005), participants were engaged in discussion, observation and interview for the purpose of exploring and analyzing how they make meaning from previous knowledge and their developing encounters with …

Power And Expertise: Student-Faculty Collaboration In Course Design And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Richard J. Mihans Ii, Deborah T. Long, Peter Felten
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This essay describes the process of using a team of faculty and undergraduate students to redesign a university course, and outlines the research we conducted on student and faculty learning from the redesign process. We focus particular attention on power relations and issues of expertise, raising questions with implications for faculty who wish to engage students in similar course design projects, regardless of academic discipline, and who partner with undergraduates in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research.
Computer Facilitated Reflective Practice In A Postgraduate Supervisor’S Feedback To Students, Kathy Ahern, Fiona Hawthorne
Computer Facilitated Reflective Practice In A Postgraduate Supervisor’S Feedback To Students, Kathy Ahern, Fiona Hawthorne
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Reflective practice has been adopted by many teachers, including dissertation advisors who provide 1:1 teaching of research students. This paper discusses issues arising from our use of qualitative data analysis software (QDAS) for reflective practice and provides an analysis of the thematic coding and word/pattern searches of feedback given to postgraduate research students. We subjected written feedback provided by one dissertation advisor to three different analyses: thematic, text-string and text-pattern search. We found that use of QDAS in a thematic analysis of feedback provides new insights by indicating areas of strength and areas for improvement. Text and pattern searches are …
The Impact Of Grading On The Curve: A Simulation Analysis, George Kulick, Ronald Wright
The Impact Of Grading On The Curve: A Simulation Analysis, George Kulick, Ronald Wright
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Grading on the curve is a common practice in higher education. While there are many critics of the practice it still finds wide spread acceptance particularly in science classes. Advocates believe that in large classes student ability is likely to be normally distributed. If test scores are also normally distributed instructors and students tend to believe that the test reasonably measures learning and that the grades are assigned fairly. Beyond an intuitive reaction, is there evidence that normally distributed test scores appropriately distinguish among student performance? Can we be sure that there is a significant correlation between test scores and …
Across Imagined Boundaries: Understanding Mexican Migration To Georgia In A Transnational And Historical Context, Michael Kirkland Bess
Across Imagined Boundaries: Understanding Mexican Migration To Georgia In A Transnational And Historical Context, Michael Kirkland Bess
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Mexican immigrant community in Georgia grew at a dramatic rate between 1970 and 2000 as individuals entered the area to participate in the states burgeoning economy. Social networks played an integral role in this process, transferring information about Georgia through family and friendship bonds that stretched between sending and receiving communities across the United States and Mexico. This thesis examines the transnational characteristics of social networks as they influenced Mexican migration trends, responded to economic opportunity and crisis across North America, and challenged government attempts to restrict and regulate the movement of people across international boundaries. Conditions in Mexico …
The Bridge Course Design: Formative Assessment And Student-Centered Learning In Cross-Course Classrooms, John Davies, Casey Welch, Jace Hargis
The Bridge Course Design: Formative Assessment And Student-Centered Learning In Cross-Course Classrooms, John Davies, Casey Welch, Jace Hargis
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This paper reports on the effectiveness of an innovative course design that bridges classes from two different disciplines. The Bridge design creates assignments in two classes: a summary class and a panel class. The design encourages students to engage in teaching and interacting with their peers within and across disciplines, and provides instructors with unique opportunities for formative assessment. Relative to control groups, students in the summary class perceived greater opportunities to teach peers, participate in class discussions, think critically, and engage in collaborative learning. Students in the panel class showed gains in critical thinking. Both classes afforded multiple opportunities …
Superhero As Metaphor: Using Creative Pedagogies To Engage, Christie H. Burton
Superhero As Metaphor: Using Creative Pedagogies To Engage, Christie H. Burton
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Video case studies of realistic scenarios have long been used to illustrate course concepts and provide variety in the classroom. The growing popularity of superheroes in film suggests an openness to experience beyond the traditional fare. This qualitative study uses content analysis to explore how students’ understanding of ethics concepts changed over time after viewing a superhero film and writing with metaphor. A pre-test post-test design was used, where students in an undergraduate management course completed a writing assignment before and after experiencing the film. Results suggest that after students were exposed to the treatment, they had a deeper understanding …

La Narrativa De Lucía Etxebarría: Desvelando El Estado Actual De La Mujer Española, Lydia Masanet
La Narrativa De Lucía Etxebarría: Desvelando El Estado Actual De La Mujer Española, Lydia Masanet
The Coastal Review
This article underlines the traits that support the narrative of Lucía Etxebarría in her up-front compromise to unveil and denounce the reality of the Spanish women’s position in the new millennium. The literary universe of Etxebarría, full of false gains, preconditioned determinations, and unreachable expectations, redundantly questions a reality in which women of Spain are immersed, all tricks that if seen from the distance, appear to transfer the practicing of equality mandated by new laws without difficulty.

Soldados De Salamina (2001): Cercas En Busca De Un Héroe Con El Instinto De La Virtud, Marie Guiribitey
The Coastal Review
The work analyzes the role of literature in reconstructing historical memory and in serving to attest against the collective amnesia which takes place during the transition to democracy in Spain. The recreating of a historic episode during the Civil War allows the narrator of Soldados de Salamina to remake the past and call for the recovery of historical memory. Also examined is Maurice Halbwachs’ premise-the need to maintain “an affective community” in order to arrive at a reconstruction of memories.
Global Health And Politics: Julia Alvarez’ Saving The World, Amrita Das
Global Health And Politics: Julia Alvarez’ Saving The World, Amrita Das
The Coastal Review
Julia Alvarez’ novel Saving the World (2006) is a comment on the politics of Global Health. Alvarez reconstructs the tale of Isabel Sendales y Gomez, the lone female participant in the early 19th century’s Spanish Royal Expedition to eradicate smallpox around the world, mainly in the Spanish colonies. The historical narrative is paralleled by the tale of Alma Rodríguez, a 21st Century Dominican American author who is faced with a similar situation, aiding in an idealistic project to eradicate AIDS in the Dominican Republic. Alvarez’ work throws into sharp relief what happens when the philanthropic ideals of healing the world …
Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar
Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar
The Coastal Review
This article analyzes ways in which the "quest for the absolute" is treated in two works: Balzac's novel, of the same name (La Recherche de l'absolu), and Valéry's Monsieur Teste. Both texts involve a paradoxical narrative device, by which the genius of the protagonist is communicated to the reader, not by the representation of his thoughts, but by a veiling of them--an impenetrable interiority that suggests communion with the absolute. This device is successful, to the degree that it plays upon our own desires for transcendent knowledge. Under closer scrutiny, however, we find that such texts must eventually …
Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron
Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This work is a postmodern, historical analysis that seeks to trouble the private/public distinction that is traditionally drawn in educational history and theory by examining the histories of public schools and independent schools around the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization. Although there is much literature and research regarding these topics within the context of public schooling, much of it is ahistorical in many respects. There is much less scholarly work discussing these topics in the sector of independent schooling. The majority of the literature on the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization in schooling takes an either/or …
History, Historical Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management: A Case Study From Jasper County, South Carolina, Angus Caldwell Sawyer
History, Historical Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management: A Case Study From Jasper County, South Carolina, Angus Caldwell Sawyer
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Virgil Noble (1996) has noted a deficiency in historical archaeological research within the sphere of cultural resource management, attributable to inadequacies within regulatory agencies, resulting in trite methodological exercises. This thesis demonstrates that another problem can be found in the basic methodology of historical archaeology as translated into practice in compliance archaeology. A review of a data recovery project in Jasper County, South Carolina shows that the necessary relationship between the documentary and archaeological particulars, that are not well codified in the standards for archaeological investigations, led to the creation of a program of study that would likely lead to …
Comparison Of Optimism Levels And Life Stress Levels Among Ncaa Division I Athletes And Non-Athletes, Eleanor Kate Shearman
Comparison Of Optimism Levels And Life Stress Levels Among Ncaa Division I Athletes And Non-Athletes, Eleanor Kate Shearman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Researchers suggest that optimistic individuals approach life situations with the belief that outcomes will be favorable, and are more likely to exhibit better coping mechanisms when dealing with adversity and stress (Carver, & Scheier, 1987; Karadeaus, Karvelis, Argyropoulou, 2007). Moreover, the cognitive adaptation theory suggests that optimistic individuals are more likely to make appropriate cognitive adaptations to stressful situations (Lightsey, 1994; Alloy & Clements, 1992). Results concerning athletic status, gender, optimism, and stress are mixed. The purpose of this study was to compare athletes and non athletes and gender on optimism and life stress. The present study will utilize the …
Individual Difference Moderators Of Interpersonal And Intrapsychic Reactions To Hostile-Controlling Coaching Behaviors, Erin Shelton Bullett
Individual Difference Moderators Of Interpersonal And Intrapsychic Reactions To Hostile-Controlling Coaching Behaviors, Erin Shelton Bullett
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Hostile-controlling coaching behaviors, which can include screaming obscenities and placing blame on the athletes, can lead to counterproductive responses such as withdrawal from sport and decreased performance. Research has shown individuals who perceive coaches to be blaming increase their own self-blame (Conroy & Coatsworth, 2007). Individual difference variables may moderate how athletes respond to hostile-controlling coaching behaviors. The purpose of the current research was to examine fear of failure, need for achievement, and self-esteem as individual difference moderators of interpersonal and intrapsychic reactions to hostile controlling coaching behaviors. After controlling for autonomy support, fear of failure and self-esteem were significant …

Preparation For High School Mathematics Reform In The Northeast Georgia Resa District: A Stage Of Concerns Approach To Examining Professional Learning, Kay Smith Haugen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first purpose was to examine the longitudinal concerns of a cohort of high school mathematics teachers in the Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) district about implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards. The second purpose was to explore relationships among their Stages of Concerns profiles, demographic factors, and professional learning experiences provided by institute instructors. The study examined Implementation of Georgia Performance Standards in High School Mathematics as a change innovation using the Concerns-Based Adoption Model. The study utilized a mixed methods timeseries research design. Quantitative data were collected using the …
