Teaching Social Justice Through Community Engagement, Rosemary B. Closson, Barbara Mullins Nelson Jan 2009

Teaching Social Justice Through Community Engagement, Rosemary B. Closson, Barbara Mullins Nelson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This research was motivated by our desire for our students to achieve a deeper appreciation for the social justice aspect of our field, adult education, and also to engage them with the community. We sought to accomplish these ends as students at two different state universities volunteered to build a home with Habitat for Humanity. Data was collected using focus groups and reflective papers and analyzed using a constant-comparative method. We found that student engagement with Habitat for Humanity resulted in students’ personal growth and to a lesser extent they learned something about the potential of adult education to contribute …

Using Modeling And Creating A Research Discourse Community To Teach A Doctoral Action Research Course, Cher Hendricks Jan 2009

Using Modeling And Creating A Research Discourse Community To Teach A Doctoral Action Research Course, Cher Hendricks

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of teaching action research through modeling. Participants were 11 doctoral students enrolled in a two-semester practitioner-based research course. In this study, I was both instructor and member of the research community. I modeled the steps of action research as I conducted a study of my practice, which focused on having students engage in reflective activities for the purpose of aligning their core educational values and the actions taken in their research studies. The students and I engaged in discussions of our research projects, and as part of the research community, …

Reading In-Between The Lines: Exploring The Experience Of Cultivating Cultural Awareness With White Teacher Candidates In A Liberal Arts University In Georgia, Holley Morris Roberts Jan 2009

Reading In-Between The Lines: Exploring The Experience Of Cultivating Cultural Awareness With White Teacher Candidates In A Liberal Arts University In Georgia, Holley Morris Roberts

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study was to explore the use of critical literacy (Freire, 1998) to assist predominately White teacher candidates in their preparation to teach diverse groups of students. Seven White females, who were born and reared in Georgia, participated in the study. These participants were encouraged to critically examine their personal, racial, and cultural roots through autobiographical papers, literature circles using African American children's books, critical reflective papers responding to the literature circles, conversations, and interviews. Three bodies of research provided the theoretical framework for the study: White identity theory (Kunjufu, 2002, McIntyre, 1997, Wise, 2008), critical literacy theory (Freire, 1974, …

Curriculum Studies The Creative Student: A Winnicottian Literary Analysis, Stephanie Leigh Perry Jan 2009

Curriculum Studies The Creative Student: A Winnicottian Literary Analysis, Stephanie Leigh Perry

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Generalizations are made regarding the importance of creativity because creativity is considered to be the hallmark that sets humans apart from other animals. Creativity is a highly coveted gift that allows people the outlet by which to achieve greater joy, fulfillment, and meaning in their lives. However, relatively little is known about the origins of creativity and how to achieve greater creativity. Hoping to improve the quality of life of individuals and society, this dissertation examines the creativity that first springs up between a child and parent. In researching the relationship between children and parents, I draw heavily from the …

Turkey And The European Union: Creating Domestic Norms Through International Socialization, Maureen E. Wilson Jan 2009

Turkey And The European Union: Creating Domestic Norms Through International Socialization, Maureen E. Wilson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Republic of Turkey is the most controversial candidate state for European Union membership to date. Not only does Turkey face obstacles with the technical aspects of the enlargement process such as changes in domestic policies, the legal system, and economy, but the proposed accession of Turkey to the European Union exposes a divergence in norms, values and state identity. The process of international socialization is one explanation for the domestic changes occurring in Turkey as part of European Union membership negotiations. Through the lens of the constructivist-rationalist debate in international relations, this study examines how changes in domestic norms …

Nagorno Karabakh Conflict: Problems And Possibilities For Political Resolution, Jessica Williams Jan 2009

Nagorno Karabakh Conflict: Problems And Possibilities For Political Resolution, Jessica Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The argument that democratic states do not go to war with one another, better known by political scientists and international relations theorists as the democratic peace proposition, remains one of the most difficult to dispute phenomena in state's relations with one another. Immanuel Kant argued over two hundred years ago that three components were necessary in order for dyads to behave peacefully toward one another: institutionalized democracy, closely intertwined economies, and international organizations. In this thesis, I analyze a specific dyad, Armenia and Azerbaijan, which in the early 1990s, had a war over the territory of Nagorno Karabakh. A cease-fire …

Beyond Lines On The Cv: Faculty Applications Of Their Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Research, Kathleen Mckinney, Pat Jarvis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper reports on a study focusing on a key issue in the field of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The goal of our research was to examine the frequency, types, supports, and barriers for the practical application of SoTL results. In this paper we report on quantitative and qualitative results from a study assessing the level and forms of concrete applications of SoTL to improve teaching and learning. We obtained data from a self-administered questionnaire and a focus group with respondents drawn from 20 faculty/staff recipients of internal SoTL grants at a large Midwestern university as well …

Learning From Their Own Learning: How Metacognitive And Meta-Affective Reflections Enhance Learning In Race-Related Courses, Nancy L. Chick, Terri Karis, Cyndi Kernahan Jan 2009

Learning From Their Own Learning: How Metacognitive And Meta-Affective Reflections Enhance Learning In Race-Related Courses, Nancy L. Chick, Terri Karis, Cyndi Kernahan

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This interdisciplinary project examined how students think and feel about their learning in race-related diversity courses. Students in four classes (literature, psychology, geography) reflected on cognitive and affective dimensions of their own and their classmates’ learning. The Color Blind Racial Attitudes Scales (CoBRAS) confirmed qualitative analyses of learning patterns in three of the classes that resulted in moving from lack of awareness about racism to increased understanding and in the fourth class that lacked this movement. Findings include what helped students learn, cognitive and affective obstacles to learning, and the benefit of exposing students to multiple perspectives, empathy-enhancing activities, and …

Service Learning In A Non-Majors Biology Course Promotes Changes In Students’ Attitudes And Values About The Environment, Alissa Packer Jan 2009

Service Learning In A Non-Majors Biology Course Promotes Changes In Students’ Attitudes And Values About The Environment, Alissa Packer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

I was interested in whether the inclusion of a service-learning experience would affect students’ attitudes and values about the environment. To investigate this question, I incorporated a service-learning project into the laboratory portion of one of the two sections of my non-majors biology course, and kept the lecture portions of the course identical. Several methods were used to assess the impact of the service-learning experience: the New Ecological Paradigm survey was used to measure changes in students’ attitudes and values about the environment at the beginning and end of the semester, and reflective writing assignments were used throughout the semester …

Operationalization Of Innovative And Traditional Pedagogical Practices Within Undergraduate Bioengineering Courses, Monica F. Cox Jan 2009

Operationalization Of Innovative And Traditional Pedagogical Practices Within Undergraduate Bioengineering Courses, Monica F. Cox

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study operationalizes pedagogical practices using classroom observation data collected in twenty-eight bioengineering courses at a southeastern research university over five semesters. Using an index that distinguishes pedagogy reflecting principles of the “How People Learn” framework and pedagogy representing traditional, lecture-based instruction, the author presents five “How People Learn” instructional practices (i.e., guidance by the instructor, comments, praise, monitoring, and question and response) and four statistically significant subcategories representing traditional instructional practices (i.e., instruction by media, lecture, praise, and no response) that were most likely to occur within observed How People Learn-oriented classes and traditional, lecture-based classes, respectively. Included are …

Sustaining Student And Faculty Success: A Model For Student Learning And Faculty Development, David Concepción, Mellisa Holtzman, Paul Ranieri

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We begin this essay with a brief description of the four-year multidisciplinary faculty development project in which we participated. After describing some of the successes of the project, we argue that three elements of our approach were integral to the increases in student learning that were facilitated by project participants: (1) The Learning Question, Disciplinary Expertise, and Foundational Learning Theory, (2) Collaboration and Evaluation, and (3) Public Support and Professional Acknowledgement.

"As-Yet-Still-Forgiven Past": Dylan Thomas And Nostalgia, David Bradley Bailey Dec 2008

"As-Yet-Still-Forgiven Past": Dylan Thomas And Nostalgia, David Bradley Bailey

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Dylan Thomas exhibited a variety of nostalgic influences within his poetry. A careful study of his life will reveal a nostalgia that evolved from adolescent musings upon an ideal past, to a self-destructive urge to return to innocence through death. Thomas incorporates a variety of historical influences within this nostalgia, but his primary influence is ultimately his own tormented past. This study not only focuses on the personal nostalgia of one man, but the variety of ways nostalgia can affect people, history and society as sociological force.
