Georgia Superintendents' Perceptions Of The Minority Achievement Gap, Thomas Watson Usry May 2008

Georgia Superintendents' Perceptions Of The Minority Achievement Gap, Thomas Watson Usry

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine Georgia superintendents' perceptions of both the possible causes of and proposed remedies for closing the Minority Achievement Gap (MAG). Using a survey instrument developed by the author, the perceptions of Georgia public school superintendents are explored. This study codifies this information so that it is available for consideration by all superintendents interested in becoming more effective leaders and in closing the MAG. As chief executive officers of school districts who play crucial roles in the education of Americas children, superintendents play a major role in addressing all aspects of the MAG, yet …

Ninth Grade Transitional Program In A Georgia Metro School District: Case Study, Samuel David Wilder May 2008

Ninth Grade Transitional Program In A Georgia Metro School District: Case Study, Samuel David Wilder

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated and further documented current perceptions of teachers and the leadership team regarding the implementation of a ninth grade transitional program model from a traditional program model during the 2007-2008 school year. With the constraints under the No Child Left Behind Act, teachers, schools, and school systems are faced with the challenge of supporting students in meeting high academic standards. Further, teachers and administrators are expected to meet this challenge with declining resources. Over the past several years, the metro Georgia high school that is the subject of this study has changed from a small, isolated, suburban high …

Job Satisfaction Experienced By Career Assistant Principals In The State Of Georgia, Barbara Forbes Hall May 2008

Job Satisfaction Experienced By Career Assistant Principals In The State Of Georgia, Barbara Forbes Hall

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to examine the level of job satisfaction experienced by career assistant principals and whether gender, school level, or career aspirations impacted that job satisfaction. Then, a list of duties commonly performed by assistant principals was created and respondents were asked to use a Likert scale to indicate the level of satisfaction they received from performing the duties. Career assistant principals were defined as those with seven or more years of experience and/or those who did not want to move higher in education. Requests were sent (by e-mail and postal mail) to 519 public …

Foundations Of College Teaching - A Course For Doctoral Students: Reflections On A Case Study In College Teaching, Sheila Vaidya, David Urias Jan 2008

Foundations Of College Teaching - A Course For Doctoral Students: Reflections On A Case Study In College Teaching, Sheila Vaidya, David Urias

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: What should doctoral level education prepare students to do?

The ability to successfully carry out an independent research project has long been thought of as the primary, and perhaps the sole criterion for obtaining a Ph.D. In recent years, increasingly, candidates for academic employment are being asked about their teaching experience and about their views on education. A report titled Reshaping the Graduate Education of Scientists and Engineers (1995) by the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, recommends changes in doctoral education in the sciences and engineering so as to provide preparation in teaching. More recently, university administrators …

Full-Cycle Assessment Of Critical Thinking In An Ethics And Science Course, Jennifer Blue, Beverley Taylor, Jan Yarrison-Rice Jan 2008

Full-Cycle Assessment Of Critical Thinking In An Ethics And Science Course, Jennifer Blue, Beverley Taylor, Jan Yarrison-Rice

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Enhancing critical thinking skills for undergraduate students is important across the curriculum and between disciplines. We report on a method of improving critical thinking skills, which was studied through an Ethics and Science First-Year Seminar course. We used full cycle assessment over a three-year period to assess students’ development and to modify the course teaching and assignments with the goal of increasing student development of critical thinking skills. Data were obtained from student writing throughout the semester during each offering. Modest, but significant, overall gains of ~0.7 on a 4 point scale are reported between early and midterm assignments in …

Responses Of Study Abroad Students In Australia To Experience-Based Pedagogy In Sport Studies, Richard Light, Steve Georgakis Jan 2008

Responses Of Study Abroad Students In Australia To Experience-Based Pedagogy In Sport Studies, Richard Light, Steve Georgakis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper contributes to research on the scholarship of teaching in the physical education/sport studies fields by examining the responses of study abroad students from overseas studying in Australia to a unit of study in sport studies that placed the interpretation of experience as the centre of the learning process. It draws on research conducted at an Australian university over an 18-month period and involving 170 participants. The study focused on the ways in which student motivations, inclinations, expectations and prior experience interacted with experiences of living in Australia and the experience-based nature of the unit of study shaped their …

Reconciling Research, Teaching And Scholarship In Higher Education: An Examination Of Disciplinary Variation, The Curriculum And Learning, George Lueddeke Jan 2008

Reconciling Research, Teaching And Scholarship In Higher Education: An Examination Of Disciplinary Variation, The Curriculum And Learning, George Lueddeke

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Integrating research and teaching in research-intensive universities is an unresolved issue as we head into the 21st century. While studies conclude that the early years of the undergraduate curriculum should be more intellectually exciting, few universities have implemented approaches such as research-led learning. The conceptual shift that is necessary involves harmonisation of the collegial and developmental cultures. Of the forces that support convergence, focusing on the curriculum and learning design may offer the best potential for connecting students and academics to knowledge communities and linking the research, teaching and scholarship missions. An important element in transforming the research-intensive university is …

Research And Experimentation In Teaching Effectiveness: The Ethical Review Process And The Irb, Philip Pecorino, Shannon Kincaid Jan 2008

Research And Experimentation In Teaching Effectiveness: The Ethical Review Process And The Irb, Philip Pecorino, Shannon Kincaid

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research and experimentation in teaching effectiveness, which makes research subjects of students in regular classroom settings, should be subject to an ethical review process that is separate from, and in addition to, the mandated review of human subjects research that is conducted by Institutional Review Boards.
Furthermore, despite the moral dilemmas that often characterize ethical decisions in the review of teaching effectiveness, we should not shy away from developing and applying a basic set of normative principles for ethical decision making.

Can Distance And Classroom Learning Be Increased?, Richard Hake Jan 2008

Can Distance And Classroom Learning Be Increased?, Richard Hake

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Professor Scott Overmyer of Baker College, in a discussion list post, raised four points bearing on a question of interest to those involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Can Distance and Classroom Learning Be Increased? My answer: “YES” - judging from the fact that pre/post testing in courses in Newtonian mechanics has demonstrated an approximately two-standard-deviation superiority in average normalized gains for classroom “interactive engagement” methods over “traditional” classroom methods. Similarly, pre/post testing might demonstrate a substantive superiority over traditional classroom teaching for both classroom and distance education that recognize recent advances in cognitive science and …

Delving Into Teachers’ Development Through Portfolio Reflections: Case Studies Of Three Teachers, Rebecca Fox, Stephen White, Julie Kidd, Gail Ritchie Jan 2008

Delving Into Teachers’ Development Through Portfolio Reflections: Case Studies Of Three Teachers, Rebecca Fox, Stephen White, Julie Kidd, Gail Ritchie

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

As part of longitudinal research on the role and scope of portfolios in teacher education programs, this study employs a case study approach to systematically examine the portfolio contents and reflections of three teachers enrolled in an advanced professional development master’s degree program in education; the three teachers were purposely selected as representative of the teachers in our program. Specifically, we examined the written reflections submitted in their program portfolios and transcripts from their exit presentations to identify connections to program learning outcomes and to gain insight into the scope and nature of the change of the teachers during the …

Book Review: Teaching As Community Property By Lee Shulman (Jossey-Bass, 2004), Lynne Mcvey Jan 2008

Book Review: Teaching As Community Property By Lee Shulman (Jossey-Bass, 2004), Lynne Mcvey

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: Teaching as Community Property is a collection of Lee Shulman’s speeches, papers and presentations from 1987-2004. It is an inspiring and practical volume of Shulman’s profound and influential contributions to the field of teaching and learning in higher education. For readers’ individual interests, it is conveniently divided into three sections; Learning, The Profession of Teaching, and Practices and Policies. In his introduction, Russell Edgerton suggests that readers view this collection from three perspectives: pedagogy, prescription and philosophy. A useful aspect of this book is that each chapter can be read individually for the purpose of finding a solution …

Overcoming Student Resistance To A Teaching Innovation, Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt, Adalet Baris Gunersel, Nancy Simpson Jan 2008

Overcoming Student Resistance To A Teaching Innovation, Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt, Adalet Baris Gunersel, Nancy Simpson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This mixed-methods study investigated student perceptions of an innovative educational tool and the instructor strategies that helped change initial student resistance into acceptance and engagement. The educational tool in this study is Calibrated Peer Review (CPR)™, a web-based program that uses writing as a learning and assessment tool. Evaluations of CPR were analyzed from students in a general chemistry course over seven semesters involving 1515 students. Analysis revealed reasons for students’ like or dislike of CPR and how the instructor modified implementation to provide students a more positive experience. Analysis of student perceptions suggests that successful implementation of new tools …

Investigating Contemplative Practice In Creative Writing And Education Classes: A Play (Of Practice And Theory) In Three Acts, Olivia Archibald, Maureen P. Hall

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Scene One, The Meeting
Creation comes from an impulse and an urge. November 2006, Washington D.C., ISSOTL pre-conference Carnegie Leadership Program meeting. I sit at one end of a long table in the Washington Hilton Hotel, facing a window that reveals the dome of the nation’s capitol. Patti Owen-Smith leads a meeting of the Cognitive Affective Learning (CAL) Group. We talk definitions, action plans, meeting dates. At the other end sits Maureen Hall. She and I have never met until this meeting. But we slowly connect with each other as the day progresses, a connection developed through an imperceptible …

Correlates Of Success In The Sociology Major, Kathleen Mckinney Jan 2008

Correlates Of Success In The Sociology Major, Kathleen Mckinney

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

My focus in this exploratory study is on factors related to success in the sociology major. One hundred, fourteen graduating majors from a mid-sized, public university completed a self-administered questionnaire. Students reported that talking with others about the material as well as using application, real world examples, and review strategies are critical to their learning. In multiple regression analyses, there is limited evidence for a positive relationship between several interpersonal academic/study behavior variables and success. Multiple and ordinal regression analyses point to a negative relationship between age and success in the sociology major at this institution. Implications for teaching and …
