Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar Jun 2008

Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar

The Coastal Review

This article analyzes ways in which the "quest for the absolute" is treated in two works: Balzac's novel, of the same name (La Recherche de l'absolu), and Valéry's Monsieur Teste. Both texts involve a paradoxical narrative device, by which the genius of the protagonist is communicated to the reader, not by the representation of his thoughts, but by a veiling of them--an impenetrable interiority that suggests communion with the absolute. This device is successful, to the degree that it plays upon our own desires for transcendent knowledge. Under closer scrutiny, however, we find that such texts must eventually …

Soldados De Salamina (2001): Cercas En Busca De Un Héroe Con El Instinto De La Virtud, Marie Guiribitey Jun 2008

Soldados De Salamina (2001): Cercas En Busca De Un Héroe Con El Instinto De La Virtud, Marie Guiribitey

The Coastal Review

The work analyzes the role of literature in reconstructing historical memory and in serving to attest against the collective amnesia which takes place during the transition to democracy in Spain. The recreating of a historic episode during the Civil War allows the narrator of Soldados de Salamina to remake the past and call for the recovery of historical memory. Also examined is Maurice Halbwachs’ premise-the need to maintain “an affective community” in order to arrive at a reconstruction of memories.

Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron May 2008

Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This work is a postmodern, historical analysis that seeks to trouble the private/public distinction that is traditionally drawn in educational history and theory by examining the histories of public schools and independent schools around the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization. Although there is much literature and research regarding these topics within the context of public schooling, much of it is ahistorical in many respects. There is much less scholarly work discussing these topics in the sector of independent schooling. The majority of the literature on the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization in schooling takes an either/or …

Mental Cage: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Mental Game In The Sport Of Mixed Martial Arts, Matthew E. Harpold May 2008

Mental Cage: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Mental Game In The Sport Of Mixed Martial Arts, Matthew E. Harpold

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Past research dealing with power sports has dealt mainly with the effects of participation in such sports as boxing and wrestling (Endresen & Olweus, 2005). Results have shown that participation in such sports has led to an increase and enhancement of violent and nonviolent antisocial behavior outside of sport (Endresen & Olweus, 2005; Bloom & Smith, 1996). The sport psychology literature has thus far failed to encompass the lived experience or possible themes that arise that stem from being a part of this culture. The purpose of this study was to examine the amateur Mixed Martial Arts athlete and their …

Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese May 2008

Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Elementary principals are required to perform a variety of duties which include, but are not limited to, administrative and instructional tasks. Intense job accountability for all students to raise the achievement of at-risk third grade students has caused principals to face challenges and to use strategies to increase student achievement. The demands of the job of principal of an elementary Title I school are complex, especially when many of the students in the school are at-risk of failure. The legislative No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 mandates and obligates principals to do their best for all students enrolled …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perception of their principals' interpersonal communication skills in relation to teacher performance. This was a qualitative study, where an authoethnographic mode of inquiry was employed. Authoethnography describes research studies of a personal nature (Ellis & Bochner, 2000). Using an interactive interview technique, five teacher participants were asked questions in an effort to elicit teachers' perception of principals' interpersonal communication skills as they relate to teachers performance. This study is significant in determining which interpersonal communication skills as perceived by teachers were most effective and essential in increasing teaching performance. Findings revealed …

Evidence Of Empathy In Animals Across Time, Jeffrey Stephen Gavel May 2008

Evidence Of Empathy In Animals Across Time, Jeffrey Stephen Gavel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Empathetic behaviors are characterized by a three-tiered hierarchical organization involving arousal, emotional contagion, and cognitive empathy. In the current study, we define each step in this hierarchy in order to build toward a paradigm that represents true cognitive empathy. We then examine the levels of empathy displayed by rats in previous paradigms and classify prior studies by level of arousal, emotional contagion, or cognitive empathy. Finally, we present two studies which examine the potential for empathetic display in rats.

Toward An Anarchist Theory Of Self: Wilderness, Actualization And Authority, Joseph Amos Garcia May 2008

Toward An Anarchist Theory Of Self: Wilderness, Actualization And Authority, Joseph Amos Garcia

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research investigated essential components of optimal human functioning. An anarchist model was used to emphasize the autonomous nature of an optimally functioning self. Utilizing Abraham Maslows hierarchy of needs model, Leonard Martins ID compensation theory, fundamental principles of anarchist theory and environmental feedback paradigms it has been shown that time spent during backpacking experiences in the wilderness may simulate immediate return social systems, allow for recognition of need fulfillment and ultimately increase self-actualization. In addition it was shown that materialism, via an ownership index, is negatively correlated with actualization. Utilizing a backward regression analysis the resulting model supports the …

Of the participants, 106 reported that they had experienced sex of some kind, 83 indicated that they had experienced single orgasm during sex with a partner, and 46 indicated that they had experienced multiple orgasms during sex with a partner. Independent variables -- general questions, communication with partner, overall satisfaction, fear of becoming pregnant, stress, general demographics and medications -- were significantly related to one or both of the measures of sexual …

Conservative Mind: A Focus On Introspection And Worldview, April A. Strickland May 2008

Conservative Mind: A Focus On Introspection And Worldview, April A. Strickland

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this study is to examine conservative attitudes as a function of introspection. Previous literature has hypothesized that conservative ideologies are the result of a dangerous and authoritarian worldview, where individuals are essentially hedonistic and need rules and regulations in order to behave morally. Empirical research has also indicated that conservatives are generally higher in authoritarianism, intolerance for ambiguity, dogmatism, and need for closure than liberals. Based on these conservative correlates, it was hypothesized within this study that less introspective thought would be shown by those individuals who hold more conservative ideologies, as opposed to those individuals that …

Comparison Of Optimism Levels And Life Stress Levels Among Ncaa Division I Athletes And Non-Athletes, Eleanor Kate Shearman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Researchers suggest that optimistic individuals approach life situations with the belief that outcomes will be favorable, and are more likely to exhibit better coping mechanisms when dealing with adversity and stress (Carver, & Scheier, 1987; Karadeaus, Karvelis, Argyropoulou, 2007). Moreover, the cognitive adaptation theory suggests that optimistic individuals are more likely to make appropriate cognitive adaptations to stressful situations (Lightsey, 1994; Alloy & Clements, 1992). Results concerning athletic status, gender, optimism, and stress are mixed. The purpose of this study was to compare athletes and non athletes and gender on optimism and life stress. The present study will utilize the …

Individual Difference Moderators Of Interpersonal And Intrapsychic Reactions To Hostile-Controlling Coaching Behaviors, Erin Shelton Bullett May 2008

Individual Difference Moderators Of Interpersonal And Intrapsychic Reactions To Hostile-Controlling Coaching Behaviors, Erin Shelton Bullett

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Hostile-controlling coaching behaviors, which can include screaming obscenities and placing blame on the athletes, can lead to counterproductive responses such as withdrawal from sport and decreased performance. Research has shown individuals who perceive coaches to be blaming increase their own self-blame (Conroy & Coatsworth, 2007). Individual difference variables may moderate how athletes respond to hostile-controlling coaching behaviors. The purpose of the current research was to examine fear of failure, need for achievement, and self-esteem as individual difference moderators of interpersonal and intrapsychic reactions to hostile controlling coaching behaviors. After controlling for autonomy support, fear of failure and self-esteem were significant …

Sexuality: Social And Cultural Constructs Of Women Represented Through Art, Gayle Shaw Clark May 2008

Sexuality: Social And Cultural Constructs Of Women Represented Through Art, Gayle Shaw Clark

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Life is one beauty pageant after another. There is always competition, be it physically or mentally. Societal rules have always determined the constructions of gender both accepted and taboo. My research explores how these social constructs pertaining to sexuality began and how they have been perpetuated throughout history in art. Because of my personal struggles with social constrictions as a woman, an artist, and as one whose sexual identity has been designed from these social constructs, I have explored women's roles as artists: how women and their sexuality have been portrayed in the past through artworks using various media; how …

Exploring Teachers' Beliefs About The Underrepresentation Of Minority Students In The Gifted Program In A Mid-Sized Suburban School District In Georgia, Pamela Holt Colvin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Over the past 30 years, the national numbers of kindergarten through 12th grade students from diverse backgrounds have nearly doubled. Based on the enrollment count in 2005, the state of Georgia experienced a similar change as minority students became the majority in Georgias public schools. Even though this has occurred, the total statewide number of minority students enrolled in the gifted program and the number of minority students enrolled in the gifted program in some school districts in Georgia is not representative of this diversity. The underrepresentation of minority students in the gifted program is a concern voiced in research …
