Recreation, Leisure, And Late Adulthood: Examining The Benefits Of Participation During Retirement, Thomas Sweeney, Jennifer Zorotovich
Recreation, Leisure, And Late Adulthood: Examining The Benefits Of Participation During Retirement, Thomas Sweeney, Jennifer Zorotovich
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Current demographic trends reveal that Americans are living, on average, 30 years longer and contemporary older adults are entering late adulthood with more education, health, and financial resources than ever before. As a result, both men and women spend increasingly more years in retirement. Retirement serves as a major developmental transition and although heavily glamorized by the media, creates a substantial disruption in many people’s lives. Transition out of the workforce is accompanied by a change of social roles, a reduction in social convoys, and altered identity structures. Recreation and leisure have been shown to provide older adults an avenue …

Fighting Fake News And Biases With Cognitive Psychology, Marlee Givens, Seth Porter, Karen Viars, Liz Holdsworth
Fighting Fake News And Biases With Cognitive Psychology, Marlee Givens, Seth Porter, Karen Viars, Liz Holdsworth
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Fake news, faulty data, and questionable research outputs: how do we find the truth when so much information is uncertain? Part of this problem is cognitive biases in our decision-making process. The mind will create a durable narrative around knowns and ignore unknowns. Scholar Daniel Kahneman (2012) refers to this phenomenon as, "What you see is all there is" or WYSIATI. Another common heuristic, the "availability cascade," causes the mind to prefer immediate examples that come to mind over more reliable information that is less easily recalled. These biases limit the accuracy of the information that people understand, as well …

Sharpening Your Aim: Building An Instructional Assessment Toolkit, Karen Doster-Greenleaf
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Faced with the challenge of unifying consolidated library instruction programs with varying missions Georgia State University Library formed the Library Instruction Outcomes and Assessment Working Group (LIOAWG). Tasked with developing standard learning outcomes and leading the implementation of a common instruction program targeting first year students, the working group developed a sandbox of assessment activities, each mapped to a specific learning outcome.
In this workshop, participants will work to develop performative learning outcome aligned assessments that can be modified to meet varying levels of information literacy competency. Working in small groups, participants will be assigned a specific learning outcome, then …
Inoculating Students Against Digital Media Manipulation In The Algorithmic Age, Robert Berkman
Inoculating Students Against Digital Media Manipulation In The Algorithmic Age, Robert Berkman
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Propaganda, media manipulation, and bias in the news is not, of course, a new issue. However, in today’s hyper accelerated digital and social information environment, there are novel and more powerful methods being intentionally employed to convince media consumers to place their attention on, click, read/watch and believe content that was created to serve a very specific pre-existing agenda. These actors who create this agenda based news—whether political, commercial, or otherwise—today leverage machine learning, big data, behavioral psychology, knowledge of algorithms, social media user behavior, and networking theory, to created what has come to be rather dramatically called “weaponized” information. …

Research Resurgence: Supporting Our University Qep With Our Information Literacy Expertise, Amanda Hahn, Hannah Lowder
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Championing information literacy has long been the mission of university librarians. When our University chose “Cultivating a Community of Research and Scholarship” as the focus of our Quality Enhancement Plan the Library was invited to join two interdisciplinary course development teams. Librarians collaborated with faculty from various academic departments to design two introductory research courses. These sequential courses lay the foundation of information literacy that springboards students to higher level research.
Inquiry 101 centers on the themes of the value and relevance of research, introduction to the application of research, and an introduction to information literacy skills. As a major …

Working Information: Developing A Qep For Campus-Wide Information Literacy Infusion, Susan N. Moore
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
When Spartanburg Community College was looking for a new QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) for their reaccreditation, the SCC Library saw a great opportunity to widen our faculty collaborations across the curriculum. The Library wrote the proposal that eventually became the College’s new QEP and worked with a diverse team to develop a college-wide information literacy program entitled WIn: Working Information.
Now in its second year, this five-year program aims to make information literacy part of the institutional culture by having faculty work with librarians to infuse information literacy skills and assignments throughout their curriculum.
The overall goal of …

Who’S Evaluating The Evaluators? Cognitive Biases, Fake News, And Information Literacy, Jon C. Pope, Kim Becnel
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In response to the increased attention to “fake news” and “alternative facts” as information challenges in the wake of the recent election cycle, librarians and educators have dramatically stepped up efforts to cultivate basic information literacy skills, especially prioritizing the careful evaluation of online sources of information. While these critical source evaluation skills are an essential component of functional information literacy, the recent emphasis on them is predicated on a model of communication that assumes that the readers of these online sources are capable—and desirous—of making informed, objective judgments about the credibility of an external information source. Rhetorical theories, however, …
Research And Writing In The Disciplines: A Model For Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Erika Scheurer, Talia Nadir
Research And Writing In The Disciplines: A Model For Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Erika Scheurer, Talia Nadir
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In our collaborative faculty-librarian presentation, we will offer a model for institutionalizing information literacy (IL) instruction through our university’s Writing in the Disciplines courses. In this model, developed through primary and secondary research, we facilitate and support faculty-librarian collaborations, guiding pairs to maximize the potential for IL instruction as a means of supporting student writing.
As the extensive literature on faculty-librarian collaboration suggests, the "one shot" approach to IL instruction is not ideal for several reasons. Chief among them is that without shared understandings of the role of librarians and of what IL is (and is not), IL can become …

Fake News Is Not The Problem: Addressing Issues With Information Consumption In A Digital Environment, Brandy R. Horne
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Since the last presidential election, fake news has become a topic of much discussion, and Librarians, seeing an opportunity to share their information literacy expertise, have been eagerly creating and sharing articles about and guides for spotting fake news. So many have been created that lists of these resources are now beginning to circulate, such as this one from the ALA Public Programs Office: http://www.programminglibrarian.org/articles/fake-news-library-round
While these are all good resources with good information, they are being deployed as a solution to fake news, but fake news is not the real problem. It is often said that the best thing …
Flipping The One-Shot Library Workshop: Collaborations Between Librarians And Writing Program Faculty, Carrie Wastal, Crystal Goldman
Flipping The One-Shot Library Workshop: Collaborations Between Librarians And Writing Program Faculty, Carrie Wastal, Crystal Goldman
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
At UC San Diego, instruction librarians and the Muir College Writing Program (MCWP) director collaborated to redesign the one-shot library workshops provided to the college’s first-year students enrolled in a research class. Following their discussion about student knowledge gaps about conducting research, the library instruction coordinator suggested flipping the workshop so that, prior to coming to the library, students would complete an interactive online tutorial.
The new flipped library workshops now consist of two sequential parts—an online interactive tutorial and an in-person workshop. Librarians created an online tutorial on database searching, made up of multimedia and active learning experiences for …

Association Between Subjective Indicators Of Recovery Status And Heart Rate Variability Among Divison-1 Sprint-Swimmers, Andrew A. Flatt, Michael R. Esco, Fabio Y. Nakamura
Association Between Subjective Indicators Of Recovery Status And Heart Rate Variability Among Divison-1 Sprint-Swimmers, Andrew A. Flatt, Michael R. Esco, Fabio Y. Nakamura
Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a physiological marker of training adaptation among athletes. However, HRV interpretation is challenging when assessed in isolation due to its sensitivity to various training and non-training-related factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between athlete-self report measures of recovery (ASRM) and HRV throughout a preparatory training period. Ultra-short natural logarithm of the root mean square of successive differences (LnRMSSD) and subjective ratings of sleep quality, fatigue, muscle soreness, stress and mood were acquired daily for 4 weeks among Division-1 sprint-swimmers (n = 17 males). ASRM were converted to z-scores …
