The concepts of poverty, trauma and child development cannot be ignored when reviewing educational outcomes especially in schools where trauma and poverty are prevalent. Glynn County School System (GCSS) has collectively witnessed an overwhelmingly negative impact that poverty has had on early learning. Low income students are highly likely to be traumatized (e.g. witnessing violence at home, polyvictims of abuse, having separated or divorced parents) so they don’t always come to school to learn but, come to school to be loved. Many GCSS schools have students that come from low-income, high-stress home environments. One school in this district, Goodyear Elementary …

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
This year, the Georgia General Assembly passed and the Governor signed HB 763, which requires each county’s Student Attendance Protocol Committee to include reviewing school climate as part of the committee’s responsibilities. This presentation would explain the new aspects of this law and how these committees may be leveraged to advocate for school climate reform and increased behavioral health supports. We will present an example of how a committee has successfully organized to promote school climate change. The strategies and information will empower parents and communities to access these services for their children.

Foundations For Learning: How To Create A Willing Learner, Lisa Cymbor, Videsha Marya
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Motivating a learner can be a challenging task. We want to encourage children to approach us willingly during teaching opportunities. Often, teaching is associated with hard work. If we do not start out by making the interaction fun, then the child will likely want to avoid teaching times. Before getting “down to work,” we have to make sure that the child is motivated to interact with us. This presentation is for educators, parents, and caregivers of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and related disorders. Our focus will be to strengthen the teacher-learner relationship in a variety of environments. Additionally, …

Trauma Sensitive Schools And The Pbs Framework, Dr. Melissa W. Sadin
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Recent research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology shows that the toxic stress that results from early exposure to traumatic situations (abuse, neglect, in-utero exposures to drugs and alcohol, exposure to domestic violence, and poverty) impacts brain development. Neurobiology is a significant, and often overlooked, aspect is in a child's social and emotional development. The change in brain development can be connected to bullying (both perpetrators and bullies), attendance, discipline, and to the achievement gap.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study discovered that childhood trauma leads to the adult onset of chronic diseases, depression and other mental illness, violence and …

Mental Health Stigma And Help-Seeking In A College Sample: Barriers And Potential Motivators For Action, Christina H. Morris
Mental Health Stigma And Help-Seeking In A College Sample: Barriers And Potential Motivators For Action, Christina H. Morris
Honors College Theses
Stigma surrounding mental health is one of many barriers impeding help-seeking behavior. This study had two aims: (1) to examine the relationships between mental wellbeing, internalized stigma, help-seeking attitudes, and demographic variables such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and marital status, and (2) to explore what hinders students in the help-seeking process and determine what would make students more likely to seek psychological help if they perceive a need for it. It was hypothesized that the relationship between internalized stigma and help-seeking attitudes would be moderated by gender, and the relationship between mental wellbeing and help-seeking attitudes would be mediated …

Extreme sports, sports characterized as involving speed, height and danger, have become an increasingly popular pastime around the world and have grown into a $250 billion industry. As a result of the inherent risks of taking part in these extreme sports, the most common participants are thrill seeking, risk taking, and often reckless. Known as the type-T personality type, these extreme sensation seeking individual’s constantly seek out new experiences that will stimulate their mind and frequently find their thrill by participating in extreme sports. The goal of this study is to determine various factors that will influence an individual’s thrill …
An Investigation Of Web Atmospherics In Online Luxury Branding, Emilie E. Jones
An Investigation Of Web Atmospherics In Online Luxury Branding, Emilie E. Jones
Honors College Theses
Having an online presence for a retail store has transitioned from serving as simply a new avenue through which a profit can be made, to a tool that can be harnessed to express a brand’s personality. So how do luxury brands manage to maintain a high-end, exclusive status on the highly available landscape of the internet? The intention of this research is to identify whether luxury brands are currently taking advantage of differential web atmospherics cues, in a way that significantly sets them apart from non-luxury brand websites. To do this, we measured elements including screen space, reduction of elements, …

Perceived Effects Of Learning Disabilities On College Students, Samantha E. Penta
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this study is to explore the perceived effects of learning disabilities on college students, as well as the barriers faced during the transition into postsecondary education. The sample was composed of 37 undergraduate students reporting a learning disability diagnosis. A questionnaire was distributed to explore several factors; including university accommodations, barriers to academic success, and perceived stigma on campus. Participants over the age of 18 reporting a learning disability were included in the study. Approximately one-quarter of participants reported the presence of a learning disability, however, the majority of these students denied receiving academic accommodations from their …
The Relationship Between Masculinity And Stigma: Predicting Help-Seeking Behaviors In Men, Bethany G. Johnson
The Relationship Between Masculinity And Stigma: Predicting Help-Seeking Behaviors In Men, Bethany G. Johnson
Honors College Theses
Men tend to not seek help for mental health reasons, even when they express significant symptomology. Men’s barriers to help seeking are masculinity and stigma. The current study examined how masculinity, self-stigma, public-stigma, and perceived public stigma are related to men’s help seeking behaviors and the type of help seeking behavior men report advising for themselves, a friend, and a stranger. Results show masculinity was positively correlated to self-stigma and public stigma and self-stigma and public stigma are also positively correlated. Additionally, men reported being less willing to seek psychological help when expressing symptomology but more willing to suggest a …
Vulnerable Narcissism And First-Person Singular Pronoun Use, Hannah L. Dorough
Vulnerable Narcissism And First-Person Singular Pronoun Use, Hannah L. Dorough
Honors College Theses
Who talks about themselves most frequently? Recent research has explored the top correlates of self-focused language use. Depression and negative emotionality tend to appear as key positive correlates. Surprisingly, narcissism—which is largely known for its trait of self-centeredness—is not a major correlate of self-focused language use. Studies demonstrating this null effect have only measured grandiose narcissism, while entirely neglecting vulnerable narcissism. By using a survey methodology with carefully-selected trait inventories and a language task, the purpose of this study is to fill the gap in the literature—to see whether vulnerable narcissism accounts for talking about oneself, above and beyond the …

Learning Skills That Transfer: Using Class Conferences To Teach Critical Thinking, Jeanne Hughes
Learning Skills That Transfer: Using Class Conferences To Teach Critical Thinking, Jeanne Hughes
Journal of Student Success in Writing (Archived)
This qualitative study examines class writing conferences, a conference method that includes all members of the class participating in weekly discussion of written drafts. Fourteen first-year undergraduate composition students and their teacher met for one semester where they participated in class writing conferences. Field notes from class observations and writing conference discussions, written feedback from each student on drafts reviewed during class writing conferences, original drafts and revisions of writing, student interview data, and student survey data are analyzed. Evidence from the data reveals that students were active participants in this method, showing independence in writing decisions and appropriate evaluative …
