We explore the relationships between the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) feature strengths, mid-infrared continuum luminosities, far-infrared spectral slopes, optical spectroscopic classifications, and silicate optical depths within a sample of 107 ULIRGs observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The detected 6.2 µm PAH equivalent widths (EQWs) in the sample span more than two orders of magnitude (∼0.006–0.8 µm), and ULIRGs with HII-like optical spectra or steep far-infrared spectral slopes (S25/S60 < 0.2) typically have 6.2 µm PAH EQWs that are half that of lower-luminosity starbursts. A significant fraction (∼40–60%) of HII-like, LINER-like, and cold ULIRGs have very weak PAH EQWs. Many of these ULIRGs also have large (τ9.7 > 2.3) silicate optical depths. The far-infrared spectral slope is strongly correlated with PAH EQW, but not with silicate optical depth. In addition, the PAH EQW decreases with …

Towards Cultural Democracy In Teaching And Learning With Specific References To Pacific Island Nations (Pins), Konai Helu Thaman Jul 2009

Towards Cultural Democracy In Teaching And Learning With Specific References To Pacific Island Nations (Pins), Konai Helu Thaman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper argues that the teaching/learning environments of most formal educational institutions in Pacific Islands Nations (PINs) are culturally undemocratic: that is, they do not take into consideration the way most Pacific people think, learn and communicate with one another. This is true not only of the values that underpin the curriculum but also the methods that most teachers use, and the way in which student learning is assessed and evaluated.

Between Teaching And Learning: Personal Notes On The Scholarship Of Artistic Practice, Daniel Siedell Jul 2009

Between Teaching And Learning: Personal Notes On The Scholarship Of Artistic Practice, Daniel Siedell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The artist’s studio is one of the more fascinating spaces in contemporary culture, particularly because it operates in a dark cloud of misconceptions, myths, and distortions. It is assumed to be an intensely private place where creativity happens, somehow and in some way, although no one really knows what that means. This potent combination of mystification and ignorance creates problems for studio art education in the academy because the studio space is at the heart of the education of the artist. An important part of my work as an historian of modern art and critic and curator of contemporary art …

Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston Jul 2009

Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) though in its youth, is perceived by many as transforming the academy. Will the transformation of the academy promised by SoTL be a mere shifting of priorities from research in the disciplines to research in pedagogy? Or will SoTL pursue transformation of the conception of teaching and learning whereby the commons influence our identities as knowers and actors engaged in scholarship for the purposes of transformation and growth on local and global scales? Our purpose is to explore whether the scholarship of teaching and learning, as represented in literature associated with SoTL, is …

Teaching Travels: Reflections On The Social Life Of Classroom Inquiry And Innovation, Mary T. Huber Jul 2009

Teaching Travels: Reflections On The Social Life Of Classroom Inquiry And Innovation, Mary T. Huber

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

How can the lessons faculty gain through inquiry and innovation in particular classrooms and programs be of use to colleagues teaching elsewhere? Can the scholarship of teaching and learning really travel, in the sense not only of leaving home (through conversation, presentation, or publication) but also of arriving at some destination (through being heard, read, interpreted, used by someone else)? And if so, what travels (pedagogical ideas, methods of study, general inspiration)? How far (between faculty in different disciplinary, institutional, or national contexts)? And what happens to it when it gets there (how do faculty adapt the ideas for their …

Effects Of Inquiry-Based Learning On Students’ Science Literacy Skills And Confidence, Cara Gormally, Peggy Brickman, Brittan Hallar, Norris Armstrong

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Calls for reform in university education have prompted a movement from teacher- to student-centered course design, and included developments such as peer-teaching, problem and inquiry-based learning. In the sciences, inquiry-based learning has been widely promoted to increase literacy and skill development, but there has been little comparison to more traditional curricula. In this study, we demonstrated greater improvements in students’ science literacy and research skills using inquiry lab instruction. We also found that inquiry students gained self-confidence in scientific abilities, but traditional students’ gain was greater –likely indicating that the traditional curriculum promoted over-confidence. Inquiry lab students valued more authentic …

Clickers In Large Classes: From Student Perceptions Towards An Understanding Of Best Practices, Marc Patry Jul 2009

Clickers In Large Classes: From Student Perceptions Towards An Understanding Of Best Practices, Marc Patry

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Handheld wireless transponders, commonly referred to as ‘clickers’, are similar to standard household remote controls. The present study advances a dialogue in the literature about the specific ways in which clickers may be effectively used in the classroom. The present study was a survey of 516 students who were using clickers in a university course in 2006 or 2007. Student perceptions related to the use of clickers were more favorable in 2007 than in 2006. In addition, responses were more positive among introductory psychology students compared to other participants. Almost half (46%) of the responses to an open-ended question about …

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw Jul 2009

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender bias in student ratings of effective teaching. Students in five colleges were invited to rate instructors on three factors: interpersonal characteristics, pedagogical characteristics, and course content characteristics. We analyzed group differences based on student gender, instructor gender, and student level. Ratings of pedagogical characteristics and course content characteristics yielded significant interactions between student gender and instructor gender, but no differences were found among groups on interpersonal characteristics. We concluded that gender bias plays a role in students’ views of effective teaching in terms of how students evaluate pedagogical and content …

Standard Network Diagramming Language And Corresponding Meta-Model, Ségio Jim Waldring May 2009

Standard Network Diagramming Language And Corresponding Meta-Model, Ségio Jim Waldring

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will formally define and demonstrate the viability of a standardized set of symbols to be used to represent storage network components in various mediums. Without being formally defined, visual representations of storage network systems and essential networking concepts have proven themselves to be quite useful to the computer sciences industry. It is my proposition, however, that the adoption of a formally defined standardized symbol set would improve the usefulness of these visual tools, the goal being to create a language that is used as the visual tool for designing and modeling storage network solutions for any given infrastructure. …

Interior Point Methods And Kernel Functions Of A Linear Programming Problem, Latriece Y. Tanksley May 2009

Interior Point Methods And Kernel Functions Of A Linear Programming Problem, Latriece Y. Tanksley

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis the Interior -- Point Method (IPM) for Linear Programming problem (LP) that is based on the generic kernel function is considered. The complexity (in terms of iteration bounds) of the algorithm is first analyzed for a class of kernel functions defined by (3-1). This class is fairly general; it includes classical logarithmic kernel function, prototype self-regular kernel function as well as non-self-regular functions, thus it serves as a unifying frame for the analysis of IPM. Historically, most results in the theory of IPM are based on logarithmic kernel functions while other two classes are more recent. They …

Results indicated that elementary, in-service …

Relationship Between The Leadership Styles Of Principals And School Culture, Shawn Terese Martin May 2009

Relationship Between The Leadership Styles Of Principals And School Culture, Shawn Terese Martin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

While it may seem that in today's society, the leaders of the school should primarily concentrate on curriculum, assessment, and accountability, there is one significant missing piece that is just as important: school culture. Recent educational reform efforts have focused on creating effective school cultures as a means of improving student achievement. Because the role of the principal is viewed as being essential to the successful implementation of these efforts, the demands on school leaders have continuously increased, which have created a multitude of challenges for school leaders across the nation. The purpose of this study was to examine the …

Metacognition Moderates Math Anxiety And Affects Performance On A Math Task, Angela Marie Legg May 2009

Metacognition Moderates Math Anxiety And Affects Performance On A Math Task, Angela Marie Legg

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Math anxiety is a general fear or tension associated with thinking about or engaging in tasks requiring mathematical computations or interpretations. Past research paid little attention to the role of metacognition. It was expected that metacognition would moderate the effects of math anxiety such that performance, reaction time, and confidence would decrease as anxiety levels increased. Participants completed a math anxiety scale, a modular arithmetic task, and a state metacognition scale. Participants also provided information regarding their confidence in how well they answered each math question correctly as well as their estimation of their overall performance. As expected, metacognition moderated …
