Effective Principal Leadership Behaviors And Ayp Attainment: An Examination Of Distinguished And Needs Improvement Middle Schools In Georgia, Christopher M. Matthews Dec 2009

Effective Principal Leadership Behaviors And Ayp Attainment: An Examination Of Distinguished And Needs Improvement Middle Schools In Georgia, Christopher M. Matthews

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine effective principal leadership behaviors in relation to the AYP attainment of middle schools in Georgia. The relationship was examined through analyses of teachers' ratings of principals' leadership behaviors via an e-mailed instrument. The instrument contained 32 specific leadership behaviors linked to the 11 Marzano et al.'s leadership responsibilities with the highest correlation to student achievement. Three major research questions guided the inquiry of the study. First, the study investigated the presence of the leadership behaviors in distinguished and needs improvement middle schools in Georgia. Secondly, the study investigated whether there were differences …

The Impact Of After School Learning Centers On Low Achieving African American Elementary Students, Jorja Lockhart Scott

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of after school learning centers in a rural school district in South Carolina on Measures of Academic Progress achievement scores for low achieving African American elementary students. The researcher collected and analyzed Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test data administered in the Spring of 2008 from the state database and identified 419 African American low achieving fourth and fifth grade students for the study. The Educational Accountability Act of South Carolina requires that schools develop individual academic plans and provide remediation for students in grades three through eight who score Below Basic …

Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn Dec 2009

Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Our primary question was the effect of departures from assumptions on population estimates obtained using three maximum likelihood population size estimators: M0 (all individuals have the same capture probability on all occasions), Mb (behavior is affected by prior capture) and Mt (all individuals have the same capture probability that varies by occasion). After examining the initial results and observing substantial negative bias (underestimates), we attempted to model the bias for M0 and Mb capture scenarios as these situations had consistent patterns. The Mt scenario with its erratic behaviors was not modeled. We noted that M0 and Mt performed equally well …

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Algorithms For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Jason N. Brandies Dec 2009

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Algorithms For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Jason N. Brandies

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider the Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP), which is a well-known mathematical problem with many practical applications. The objective of the LCP is to find a certain vector that will satisfy a set of linear inequalities and (non-linear) complementary equation. A kernel-based primal-dual Interior-Point Method (IPM) for solving LCP was introduced and analyzed. The class of kernel functions used in this thesis is a class of so-called eligible kernel functions that are fairly general. We have shown for a positive semi-definite matrix M, that the algorithm is globally convergent and has very good convergence properties. For some …

Barriers To High School Student Academic Success, Judy S. Sapp Dec 2009

Barriers To High School Student Academic Success, Judy S. Sapp

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Since the passage of the federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind, school districts are under increasing pressure to decrease high school dropout rates and to increase high school graduation rates. There is a critical need for schools to develop and implement programs designed to maximize academic success for all high school students. The purpose of this present research was to investigate the perceptions of high school teachers and high school students about barriers to high school student academic success. For purposes of this study, high school academic success is defined as the completion of all high school diploma …

Dark Matter Halos And Evolution Of Bars In Disk Galaxies: Collisionless Models Revisited, Jorge Villa-Vargas, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller Nov 2009

Dark Matter Halos And Evolution Of Bars In Disk Galaxies: Collisionless Models Revisited, Jorge Villa-Vargas, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We construct and evolve three one-parameter families and one two-parameter family of steady-state models of stellar disks embedded in live dark matter (DM) halos in order to study the dynamical and secular phases of bar evolution. These models are tested against those published in the literature in order to extend them and to include the gaseous component in the follow-up paper. Specifically, we are interested in the angular momentum, J, redistribution in the disk-halo system during these two evolutionary phases without distinguishing between the resonant and non-resonant effects. We confirm the previous results and quantify for the first time …

Homological Dimensions And Regular Rings, Alina Iacob, Srikanth B. Iyengar Nov 2009

Homological Dimensions And Regular Rings, Alina Iacob, Srikanth B. Iyengar

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A question of Avramov and Foxby concerning injective dimension of complexes is settled in the affirmative for the class of noetherian rings. A key step in the proof is to recast the problem on hand into one about the homotopy category of complexes of injective modules. Analogous results for flat dimension and projective dimension are also established.

Interior-Point Algorithms For A Class Of Convex Optimization Problems, Goran Lesaja, Verlynda Slaughter Nov 2009

Interior-Point Algorithms For A Class Of Convex Optimization Problems, Goran Lesaja, Verlynda Slaughter

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper we consider interior-point methods (IPM) for the nonlinear, convex optimization problem where the objective function is a weighted sum of reciprocals of variables subject to linear constraints (SOR). This problem appears often in various applications such as statistical stratified sampling and entropy problems, to mention just few examples. The SOR is solved using two IPMs. First, a homogeneous IPM is used to solve the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the problem which is a standard approach. Second, a homogeneous conic quadratic IPM is used to solve the SOR as a reformulated conic quadratic problem. As far as we are …

Dissecting Galaxy Formation. I. Comparison Between Pure Dark Matter And Baryonic Models, Emilio Romano-Diaz, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller, Yehuda Hoffman Sep 2009

Dissecting Galaxy Formation. I. Comparison Between Pure Dark Matter And Baryonic Models, Emilio Romano-Diaz, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller, Yehuda Hoffman

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We compare assembly of dark matter (DM) halos with and without baryons from identical initial conditions, within the context of cosmological evolution in the ΛCDM WMAP3 Universe (baryons+DM, hereafter BDM model, and pure DM, PDM model). In representative PDM and BDM models, we find that baryons contribute decisively to the evolution of the central region, leading to an isothermal DM cusp, and thereafter to a flat DM density core—the result of heating by dynamical friction of the DM+baryon substructure during a quiescent evolution epoch. This process ablates the cold gas from an embedded disk, cutting the star formation rate by …

Lifting Bailey Pairs To Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer Aug 2009

Lifting Bailey Pairs To Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A pair of sequences (αn(a,k,q),βn(a,k,q)) such that α0(a,k,q)=1 and βn(a,k,q)=∑nj=0 (k/a;q)n−j (k;q)n+j / (q;q)n−j (aq;q)n+j αj (a,k,q) is termed a WP-Bailey Pair. Upon setting k=0 in such a pair we obtain a Bailey pair.

In the present paper we consider the problem of “lifting” a Bailey pair to a WP-Bailey pair, and use some …
