Implementation Of Interactive Whiteboards By High School Mathematics Teachers: Case Studies Of Change, Jeffrey Scott Hall May 2010

Implementation Of Interactive Whiteboards By High School Mathematics Teachers: Case Studies Of Change, Jeffrey Scott Hall

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess how mathematics teachers with varying years of Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) experience differ in their implementation of IWBs. The theoretical frameworks were constructivism and change theory. Six teachers participated in the full scale study, two in each IWB experience category: Beginner, Intermediate, and Experienced. Instruments of the Concerns Based Adoption Model were used to collect data about the participants: the Stages of Concern Questionnaire measured participants' concerns about IWBs (George, Hall, & Stiegelbauer, 2006) while the Levels of Use Interview Protocol analyzed IWB usage (Hall, Dirksen, & George, 2006). Two lessons of each …

The Need For Revision: Curriculum, Literature, And The 21st Century, David P. Owen May 2010

The Need For Revision: Curriculum, Literature, And The 21st Century, David P. Owen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation argues that curriculum, especially as it is practiced in high school education, needs revision, that literature is the place to start that revision, and that literature class itself needs to be revised to incorporate a much broader understanding of the texts to be studied so that such work might take place there. This dissertation also recognizes that the work of teaching literature and humanities classes is especially difficult today, and argues that this difficulty has dire ramifications for all teachers and researchers in and of public education, and particularly for the field of curriculum studies. This work argues …

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis May 2010

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study explores my border crossing experience among and between cultures. Although a large portion of my narrative addresses my time living as a Fulbright grantee in Latvia, this study is much more than a solitary six-month sojourn. It is a lifelong journey and an attempt to understand what is entailed when we cross physical, cultural, linguistic, socio-political, and intellectual borders. Four bodies of research provide the theoretical framework for the study: critical theory (Apple, 2001; Aronowitz and Giroux, 1993; Ayers, 2006; Chomsky, 2004, 2006; McLaren, 1997, 2005; Giroux, 1992; Zinn, 1980, 2007), exile and borderland pedagogy (Anzaldúa, 1987; Freire …

Analysis Of Discrete Data Under Order Restrictions, Jeff Campbell May 2010

Analysis Of Discrete Data Under Order Restrictions, Jeff Campbell

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Strategies for the analysis of discrete data under order restrictions are discussed. We consider inference for sequences of binomial populations, and the corresponding risk difference, relative risk and odds ratios. These concepts are extended to deal with independent multinomial populations. Natural orderings such as stochastic ordering and cumulative ratio probability ordering are discussed. Methods are developed for the estimation and testing of differences between binomial as well as multinomial populations under order restrictions. In particular, inference for sequences of ordered binomial probabilities and cumulative probability ratios in multinomial populations are presented. Closed-form estimates of the multinomial parameters under order restrictions …

Survey Of Generalized Contact Structures, James Bland May 2010

Survey Of Generalized Contact Structures, James Bland

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

A generalized complex structure, as introduced by N. Hitchin, is a common generalization of both symplectic and complex structures. Generalized complex geometry provides a natural geometric framework to understand certain recent developments in string physics, and has developed into an active area of research. Very recently, an odd dimensional analogue of a generalized complex structure, namely a generalized contact structure, has been introduced in the works of Vaizman, Poon and Wade. In this thesis, we survey the recent works on generalized contact structures. More importantly, we prove a local normal form theorem of a generalized contact structure. This result, which …

The Study Of Binary Steering Algorithms In Discrete Tomography, Brittany A. Cole May 2010

The Study Of Binary Steering Algorithms In Discrete Tomography, Brittany A. Cole

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this research project we will study the binary steering technique in iterative methods for image reconstruction in discrete tomography (DT). We will compare the effectiveness of three common algorithms to solve binary systems. The methods used are the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART), Cimmino (CIM), and Diagonally-Relaxed Orthogonal Projections (DROP) algorithms. These reconstruction algorithms will be transformed into binary reconstruction algorithms through the binary steering technique. A new binary steering technique was developed to improve the convergence of the binary steering algorithms. Numerical experiments were performed to demonstrate these improvements.

Graphical Indices And Their Applications, Daniel Gray May 2010

Graphical Indices And Their Applications, Daniel Gray

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The biochemical community has been using graphical (topological, chemical) indices in the study of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) and Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships (QSPR), as they have been shown to have strong correlations with the chemical properties of certain chemical compounds (i.e. boiling point, surface area, etc.). We examine some of these chemical indices and closely related pure graph theoretical indices: the Randić index, the Wiener index, the degree distance, and the number of subtrees. We find which structure will maximize the Randić index of a class of graphs known as cacti, and we find a functional relationship between the Wiener …

Monitoring For A Shift In A Process Covariance Matrix Using The Generalized Variance, Kellen M. Parham May 2010

Monitoring For A Shift In A Process Covariance Matrix Using The Generalized Variance, Kellen M. Parham

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The commonly recommended charts for monitoring the mean vector are affected by a shift in the covariance matrix. As in the univariate case, a chart for monitoring for a change in the covariance matrix should be examined first before examining the chart used to monitor for a change in the mean vector. One such chart is the one that plots the generalized sample variance lSl verses the sample number t. We propose to study charts based on the statistics V = l(n - 1) Σ₀-¹ Sl¹/̳p̳ and U = 1n (l (n-1) Σ₀-¹Sl¹/̳p̳), where n is the sample size and …

A Nonparametric Method For Ascertaining Change Points In Regression Regimes, Alfreda N. Rogers May 2010

A Nonparametric Method For Ascertaining Change Points In Regression Regimes, Alfreda N. Rogers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Of interest is the specific model called the joinpoint two regime regression or broken line model composed of one regression line and a horizontal ray. This is a very restricted but highly useful subset of the well-researched change point problem. The usual approach to a more general model was first presented by Quandt (1958) who found the maximum likelihood estimates of the slope, intercept and joinpoint by assuming that the error terms are generated under the usual assumptions, that is, from a normal distribution with constant variance and are uncorrelated. We develop a method that does not rely on this …

Experimental And Numerical Investigations On Aerodynamic Characteristics Of Savonius Wind Turbine With Various Overlap Ratios, Khandakar Niaz Morshed May 2010

Experimental And Numerical Investigations On Aerodynamic Characteristics Of Savonius Wind Turbine With Various Overlap Ratios, Khandakar Niaz Morshed

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Savonius wind turbine is the simplest type of vertical axis rotor that has a relatively low efficiency. Operation of the Savonius wind turbine is based on the difference of the drag force on its semi-spherical blades, depending on whether the wind is striking the convex or the concave part of the blades. This turbine is being used in various countries around the world due to the simplistic design, cheap technology for construction, and a good starting torque independent of wind direction at low wind speeds. Due to its simple design and low construction cost, this rotor is mainly used for …

A Comparison Of The Similarities And Differences Between Traditionally And Alternatively Prepared First Year Secondary Teachers In A Large Middle Georgia School District, Gail Scarborough Nelson May 2010

A Comparison Of The Similarities And Differences Between Traditionally And Alternatively Prepared First Year Secondary Teachers In A Large Middle Georgia School District, Gail Scarborough Nelson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed-method study examined mentor teachers' perception of the extent to which first-year teachers exhibit the knowledge, skills and dispositions of accomplished teachers during the 2008-2009 school year in a large school system in central Georgia. The data, collected from an online survey of mentor teachers, were compared to the data gathered from responses of six teachers from that same system in open-ended interviews which were conducted during the beginning weeks of their second year of teaching. Comparisons were made based on route to certification of the first-year teacher. The highest rated skill in both certification groups was in building …

The Effects Of Inclusion On The Academic Achievement Of Regular Education Students, Robert Scott Spence May 2010

The Effects Of Inclusion On The Academic Achievement Of Regular Education Students, Robert Scott Spence

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The academic performance of regular education students placed in an inclusive setting with special education students was compared to the academic performance of regular education students not placed in an inclusive setting. Criterion Referenced Competency Test results in mathematics and reading for middle school students were used to define academic achievement. Demographic identifiers of race and gender were also included. A causal-comparative research design was used for this quantitative study. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance in order to initially equalize the scores of the two groups of students. The researcher found no significant difference in the reading …

Principals' Perceptions Of Teacher Academy For Preparation And Pedagogy Teachers (Tapp) And Traditionally Certified Teachers, Kevin Brian Campbell Apr 2010

Principals' Perceptions Of Teacher Academy For Preparation And Pedagogy Teachers (Tapp) And Traditionally Certified Teachers, Kevin Brian Campbell

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Georgia's alternative certification program, Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy (TAPP), is producing approximately 20% of the teacher pool in Georgia although minimal research exists about the performance of TAPP teachers in Georgia classrooms compared to traditionally certified teachers. Principals that employ TAPP teachers and traditionally certified teachers are responsible for performance evaluations and; therefore, they are a valid source for providing comparisons between the two types of teacher preparation. In an effort to gain a better understanding of principals' perceptions of TAPP teachers and traditionally certified teachers, the researcher used a previously validated formal survey constructed by Dr. Michael …

Overcoming Adversity: Resilience Development Strategies For Educational Leaders, Tod Allen Farmer Apr 2010

Overcoming Adversity: Resilience Development Strategies For Educational Leaders, Tod Allen Farmer

Georgia Educational Researcher

School leadership has never been easy. However, some experts like Garcia (2005) wrote that current school leaders are facing a variety of difficulties that make sustaining school reform efforts exceedingly difficult. Collectively, these modern day challenges have the capacity to form the perfect storm. School leaders need effective strategies to cope with these difficult circumstances and to continue the thrust toward school reform. Effective coping mechanisms and resiliency development strategies that can be used by educational leaders to overcome adversity include a routine of exercise and healthy diet, a positive life view, a sustained focus on building bridges between stakeholders, …

The Effect Of Anxiety On The Measurement Of Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros Apr 2010

The Effect Of Anxiety On The Measurement Of Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between anxiety and performance on measures of reading fluency and reading comprehension in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. The study found that there is a significant negative correlation between social anxiety and reading comprehension but no significant correlation between social anxiety and reading fluency. These findings further demonstrate the distinction between the cognitive processes that underlie reading fluency and reading comprehension. The results also align with the tenets of Processing Efficiency Theory in that more complex tasks that significantly tax working memory (like reading comprehension) are more likely …

The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang Apr 2010

The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)

This paper studies the effects of the SARS outbreak on air travel between the US and three destinations; China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. ARIMA models with interventions are used to estimate the timing, depth and shape of SARS impact on international air travel. Links between empirical findings and a conceptual framework for analyzing the life cycle of a crisis are established. The conceptual framework uses situational choice and governmental public relations differences by location to explain the response patterns to the crises. The research finds significant evidence that the impact and life cycle of SARS effect on air travel varies …

Why Are Ring Galaxies Interesting?, James L. Higdon, Sarah J.U. Higdon Mar 2010

Why Are Ring Galaxies Interesting?, James L. Higdon, Sarah J.U. Higdon

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Compared with ordinary spirals, the ISM in ring galaxies experiences markedly different physical conditions and evolution. As a result, ring galaxies provide interesting perspectives on the triggering/quenching of large scale star formation and the destructive effects of massive stars on molecular cloud complexes. We use high resolution radio, sub-millimeter, infrared, and optical data to investigate the role of gravitational stability in star formation regulation, factors influencing the ISM's molecular fraction, and evidence of peculiar star formation laws and efficiencies in two highly evolved ring galaxies: Cartwheel and the Lindsay-Shapley ring.

A Unified Theory Of Function Spaces And Hyperspaces: Local Properties, Szymon Dolecki, Frédéric D. Mynard Feb 2010

A Unified Theory Of Function Spaces And Hyperspaces: Local Properties, Szymon Dolecki, Frédéric D. Mynard

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many classically used function space structures (including the topology of pointwise convergence, the compact-open topology, the Isbell topology and the continuous convergence) are induced by a hyperspace structure counterpart. This scheme is used to study local properties of function space structures on C(X,R), such as character, tighntess, fan-tightness, strong fan-tightness, the Fr{\'e}chet property and some of its variants. Under mild conditions, local properties of C(X,R) at the zero function correspond to the same property of the associated hyperspace structure at X. The latter is often easy to characterize in terms of covering properties …
