Dark Matter Halos And Evolution Of Bars In Disk Galaxies: Varying Gas Fraction And Gas Spatial Resolution, Jorge Villa-Vargas, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller
Dark Matter Halos And Evolution Of Bars In Disk Galaxies: Varying Gas Fraction And Gas Spatial Resolution, Jorge Villa-Vargas, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We conduct numerical experiments by evolving gaseous/stellar disks embedded in live dark matter halos aiming at quantifying the effect of gas spatial resolution and gas content on the bar evolution. Three model sequences have been constructed using different resolutions, and the gas fraction has been varied along each sequence within the range of f g = 0%-50%, but keeping the disk and halo properties unchanged. We find that the spatial resolution becomes important with an increase in the gas content. For the higher resolution model sequences, we observe a bimodal behavior in the bar evolution with respect to the gas …
Theoretical Properties And Estimation In Weighted Weibull And Related Distributions, Ryan Roman
Theoretical Properties And Estimation In Weighted Weibull And Related Distributions, Ryan Roman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Weibull distribution is a well known and common distribution. In this thesis, theoretical properties of weighted Weibull distributions are presented. Properties of the non-weighted Weibull distribution are also reiterated for comparison. The probability density functions, cumulative distribution functions, survival functions, hazard functions and reverse hazard functions are given for each distribution. In addition, Glaser's Lemma is applied to determine the behavior of the hazard functions. The standardized moments, differential entropy, Fisher information and results based on the likelihood function are given for each distribution as well. These results are also shown for the Rayleigh distribution, a special case of …
Effects Of Visual Analogies On Learner Outcomes: Bridging From The Known To The Unknown, Susan Spezzini
Effects Of Visual Analogies On Learner Outcomes: Bridging From The Known To The Unknown, Susan Spezzini
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This study examined the effects of visual analogies on learner outcomes in Phonology for ESL Teachers, a challenging course within a master’s degree program at a prominent university in the southeastern United States. To reduce student anxiety, facilitate Saturday classes, and bridge from the known to the unknown, concrete images (train cars) were used to represent abstract ideas. Data were analyzed from course evaluations and exams of 70 students in two non-analogy courses (2004, 2005) and 114 students in three analogy-based courses (2007, 2008, 2009) and from an electronic survey completed by 64 former students (September 2009). Course evaluations improved, …

A Model For Undergraduate Research In Statistics Education, Alan Russell
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This essay shows how the current SoTL project was used as a vehicle for undergraduate research to directly improve student learning and how it might be used to introduce a new paradigm in the training of secondary mathematics teachers. Using the language of David Lopatto’s research into undergraduate research, I share how I have integrated an undergraduate student as a co-investigator of our SoTL project. The article shares the criterion I used for choosing the student, a brief overview of the SoTL project, the educational benefits for the student and possible future directions for incorporating undergraduate students.
Restructuring Introductory Physics By Adapting An Active Learning Studio Model, Delena Gatch
Restructuring Introductory Physics By Adapting An Active Learning Studio Model, Delena Gatch
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Despite efforts to engage students in the traditional lecture environment, faculty in Georgia Southern University’s Physics Department became dissatisfied with lecture as the primary means of instruction. During the fall semester of 2006, our department began adapting the studio model to suit the needs of introductory calculus-based physics students at our institution. A studio course seamlessly integrates the lecture and laboratory courses into a single course, devoting much of the class time to active, collaborative, student-centered learning. An emphasis was placed on replacing traditional lectures with interactive, technology enriched class periods designed around the various learning styles. New teaching materials …

Davis, Jia-Sheng Wang, Pauline E. Jolly, Nii-Ayi Ankrah, William O. Ellis, Evans Afriyie-Gyawu, Natalie M. Johnson, Abraham G. Robinson, Timothy D. Phillips
Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Promotion of the HIV epidemic by aflatoxin is postulated but not yet established. Sub-Saharan populations commonly consume food contaminated by mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins (predominantly found in peanut, maize, rice, and cassava) and fumonisins, which occur primarily in maize. Aflatoxin promotes hepatocellular cancer, and fumonisin may promote esophageal cancer.
Objectives: This analysis was undertaken to test the hypotheses that consumption of mycotoxin-prone staple foods is 1) related to the incidence of HIV infection in Africa and 2) related to “signature” cancer rates confirming exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins.
Design: World Health Organization data for causes of death and the Food …

Getting Up To Speed: Acceleration Strategies In The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Eric J. Mcelroy, Lance D. Mcbrayer
Biology: Faculty Publications
Small animals typically rely on quick bursts and intermittent pauses when moving in the wild. Hence, the study of acceleration capacity is important for understanding the ecology and evolution of locomotor performance. In this study, we investigate intraspecific variation in the acceleration capacity of a small lizard (Sceloporus woodi). To quantify animal acceleration performance, the momentum‐impulse theorem is applied to data collected from high‐speed video recordings of individuals accelerating from a standstill and over a subsequent distance of 0.4 m. Unlike earlier studies, the momentum‐impulse approach allows one to directly and precisely quantify the per step contribution to …

Methods For Comparing Two Means With Application In Adaptive Clinical Trials, Fengjiao Hu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In the design of a clinical trial, the study of the effect of an intervention for a given medical condition is frequently of interest to researcher. Also, in recent years, the use of sequential and adaptive design methods in clinical research and development based on accrued data has become very popular due to its flexibility and efficiency. In this thesis, we derive the Behrens-Fisher distribution, and use the distributional result to examine the effect of an intervention by comparing population means of intervention group and control group. Sample size prediction methods proporting to solve the Behrens-Fisher problem are examined. A …
Rh Glycoprotein As An Ammonia Transport Molecule, Matthew B. Phillips
Rh Glycoprotein As An Ammonia Transport Molecule, Matthew B. Phillips
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Fish use their gills to excrete ammonia in order to eliminate nitrogenous waste. We hypothesize that this mechanism is accomplished by one or more transport proteins in the Rh glycoprotein (RhxG) family. Longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) cDNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and then the PCR products were visualized on an agarose gel. The cDNA from the gel bands was then sequenced and the gene sequence fragments were assembled and completed by rapid amplification of the cDNA ends (RACE). By this process we have obtained large portions of the gene sequences of the four known paralogues located in …

Finding Your Place In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Daniel Bernstein
Finding Your Place In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Daniel Bernstein
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Excerpt:
One thing is abundantly clear about the emerging communities of scholarship in teaching and learning. Many, many instructors in higher education throughout the world are paying close attention to their students' learning, reflecting on their own contributions to that learning, and making their thoughts and their work visible to others. An attitude of inquiry about teaching and learning is no longer limited to faculty members who specialize in education research; the best instructors in...
Thinking Critically About Critical Thinking In Higher Education, Margaret Lloyd, Nan Bahr
Thinking Critically About Critical Thinking In Higher Education, Margaret Lloyd, Nan Bahr
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The literature on critical thinking in higher education is constructed around the fundamental assumption that, while regarded as essential, is neither clearly nor commonly understood. There is elsewhere evidence that academics and students have differing perceptions of what happens in university classrooms, particularly in regard to higher order thinking. This paper reports on a small-scale investigation in a Faculty of Education at an Australian University into academic and student definitions and understandings of critical thinking. Our particular interest lay in the consistencies and disconnections assumed to exist between academic staff and students. The presumption might therefore be that staff and …
The "Classroom Ticket" To Concept Retention, Kent Divoll, Sandra Browning
The "Classroom Ticket" To Concept Retention, Kent Divoll, Sandra Browning
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Classroom assessment techniques have been advocated for use in the college classroom for over 20 years. The authors of this paper formed a new teaching technique, the ticket to retention (TtR), one that changes classroom assessment techniques so that the emphasis is on student retention of concepts. This technique combines the benefits of the ticket to leave, the one minute paper, the half-sheet response, the post-write strategy, and think-pair-share strategies. During the TtR technique, a sheet with one to five target questions is distributed to students. Students write their answers to the questions, discuss their responses with two classmates,a nd …

On The Characteristic Polynomial Of Regular Linear Matrix Pencil, Yan Wu, Phillip Lorren
On The Characteristic Polynomial Of Regular Linear Matrix Pencil, Yan Wu, Phillip Lorren
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Linear matrix pencil, denoted by (A,B), plays an important role in control systems and numerical linear algebra. The problem of finding the eigenvalues of (A,B) is often solved numerically by using the well-known QZ method. Another approach for exploring the eigenvalues of (A,B) is by way of its characteristic polynomial, P(λ)=A − λB. There are other applications of working directly with the characteristic polynomial, for instance, using Routh-Hurwitz analysis to count the stable roots of P(λ) and transfer function representation of control systems governed by differential-algebraic equations. In this paper, we …

Dissecting Galaxy Formation. Ii. Comparing Substructure In Pure Dark Matter And Baryonic Models, Emilio Romano-Diaz, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller, Yehuda Hoffman
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We compare the substructure evolution in pure dark matter (DM) halos with those in the presence of baryons, hereafter PDM and BDM models, respectively. The prime halos have been analyzed in the previous work. Models have been evolved from identical initial conditions which have been constructed by means of the constrained realization method. The BDM model includes star formation and feedback from stellar evolution onto the gas. A comprehensive catalog of subhalo populations has been compiled and individual and statistical properties of subhalos analyzed, including their orbital differences. We find that subhalo population mass functions in PDM and BDM are …

Exploring The Minority Teacher Shortage In Southeast Georgia, Kelly Renee' Howe
Exploring The Minority Teacher Shortage In Southeast Georgia, Kelly Renee' Howe
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In the United States, the Southern states have been impacted drastically by the increasing number of Hispanic and African American residents (Walker, 2009). In October 2005, Georgia had its first student enrollment count in which the state was noted as being a majority-minority public school system, which means more than half of the school population was comprised of non-white individuals (Johnson, 2006). These demographic trends make it necessary for educational leaders in Georgia to examine practices that can positively impact the achievement of all subgroups of students (Walker, 2009). While there is a definite need for high quality teachers in …
A Comparison Of Educator Perceptions Of Data Use Within Seven Characteristics Of Accountability Systems, Peggy Marie Stoming
A Comparison Of Educator Perceptions Of Data Use Within Seven Characteristics Of Accountability Systems, Peggy Marie Stoming
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Due to the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, known as No Child Left Behind, many changes in public education and leadership have occurred. The increased accountability demands have led to an increase in practices such as data-driven decision-making and the establishment of accountability systems designed to ensure an increase in student achievement. With such high demands, it is imperative that data use be pervasive and systemic throughout a school. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the perceived implementation of specific measures of accountability systems, the following characteristics were examined: (a) high expectations for all …

The study sought to identify specific strengths and weaknesses of alternatively certified teachers. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight public school administrators, four from the middle school level and four from the high school level, in an eastern Georgia county. The interview questions were developed using the categories of evaluation outlined in the Georgia Teacher Observation Instrument. A demographic questionnaire was also given to enrich the data in this study. This study generated data …
Elementary Principals' Follow-Through In Teacher Evaluation To Improve Instruction, Suzanne Elizabeth Arrington
Elementary Principals' Follow-Through In Teacher Evaluation To Improve Instruction, Suzanne Elizabeth Arrington
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Author's abstract: Today, school administrators view teacher evaluation as a way to improve instruction and remove mediocre teachers from the system; however, while much is teacher evaluation, there is still much to learn. This study explored how school principals being written about employed follow-through with teacher evaluation systems for the purpose of increased student learning. This study makes both theoretical and practical contributions to the fields of education and school leadership. This was a qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and a thorough review of the teacher evaluation documents in a small county in Georgia as the method of …
