Compositions, Partitions, And Fibonacci Numbers, Andrew Sills Nov 2011

Compositions, Partitions, And Fibonacci Numbers, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A bijective proof is given for the following theorem: the number of compositions of n into odd parts equals the number of compositions of n+ 1 into parts greater than one. Some commentary about the history of partitions and compositions is provided.

Gorenstein Injective Modules, Emily Mclean Nov 2011

Gorenstein Injective Modules, Emily Mclean

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

One of the open problems in Gorenstein homological algebra is: when is the class of Gorenstein injective modules closed under arbitrary direct sums? Our main result gives a sufficient condition for this to happen. We prove that when the ring R is noetherian and such that every R-module has finite Gorenstein injective dimension, every direct sum of Gorenstein injective modules is still Gorenstein injective.

A Bayesian Model For Gene Family Evolution, Liang Liu, Lili Yu, Venugopal Kalavacharla, Zhanji Liu Nov 2011

A Bayesian Model For Gene Family Evolution, Liang Liu, Lili Yu, Venugopal Kalavacharla, Zhanji Liu

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

Background

A birth and death process is frequently used for modeling the size of a gene family that may vary along the branches of a phylogenetic tree. Under the birth and death model, maximum likelihood methods have been developed to estimate the birth and death rate and the sizes of ancient gene families (numbers of gene copies at the internodes of the phylogenetic tree). This paper aims to provide a Bayesian approach for estimating parameters in the birth and death model.

Results

We develop a Bayesian approach for estimating the birth and death rate and other parameters in the birth …

Prototyping Method For Bragg Type Atom Interferometers, Brandon Benton, Michael Krygier, Jeffrey Heward, Mark Edwards, Charles W. Clark Oct 2011

Prototyping Method For Bragg Type Atom Interferometers, Brandon Benton, Michael Krygier, Jeffrey Heward, Mark Edwards, Charles W. Clark

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a method for rapid prototyping of new Bragg ultra-cold atom interferometer (AI) designs useful for assessing the performance of such interferometers. The method simulates the overall effect on the condensate wave function in a given AI design using two separate elements. These are (1) modeling the effect of a Bragg pulse on the wave function and (2) approximating the evolution of the wave function during the intervals between the pulses. The actual sequence of these pulses and intervals is then followed to determine the approximate final wave function from which the interference pattern can be calculated. The exact …

Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian Sep 2011

Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Before releasing databases which contain sensitive information about individuals, statistical agencies have to apply Statistical Disclosure Limitation (SDL) methods to such data. The goal of these methods is to minimize the risk of disclosure of the confidential information and at the same time provide legitimate data users with accurate information about the population of interest. SDL methods applicable to the microdata (i. e. collection of individual records) are often called masking methods. In this paper, several multiplicative noise masking schemes are presented. These schemes are designed to preserve positivity and inequality constraints in the data together with the vector of …

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a current catalog of 21?cm H I line sources extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey over ~2800?deg2 of sky: the ?.40 catalog. Covering 40% of the final survey area, the ?.40 catalog contains 15,855 sources in the regions 07h30m < R.A. < 16h30m, +04? < decl.z < 0.25. A detailed analysis is presented of the completeness, width-dependent sensitivity function and bias inherent of the ?.40 catalog. The impact of survey selection, distance errors, current volume coverage, and local large-scale structure on the derivation of the H I mass function is assessed. While ?.40 does not yet provide a completely representative sampling of cosmological volume, derivations of the H I mass function using future data releases from ALFALFA will further improve both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Internationalization Of A Faculty Sotl Program: Immersion Experiences Of Beijing Professors In A Canadian Research-Intensive University, Baohua Wang, Junfang Peng, Marion L. Pearson, Harry Hubball

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This essay describes an international exchange program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) for a cohort of faculty from the Bilingual Training Program (BTP) of the Beijing Teachers Training Center for Higher Education (BTTCHE). The Beijing professors’ cohort participated in an adapted version of UBC’s Faculty Certificate Program on Teaching and Learning (FCP), which provided them with an immersion experience designed to improve their English language skills and to enhance their understanding of key concepts pertaining to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) within and across disciplinary contexts. Critical reflections from both participants’ and instructors’ perspectives suggest that …

Students Who Aren't Prepared For College Find Less Value In Books And Lecture Than Students Who Are Prepared, Jeffrey B. Henriques, Lyrissa I. Kusse Jul 2011

Students Who Aren't Prepared For College Find Less Value In Books And Lecture Than Students Who Are Prepared, Jeffrey B. Henriques, Lyrissa I. Kusse

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Students in three sections of introductory psychology, N = 1051, were asked about the utility of traditional, e.g. instructor, lectures and textbook, and nontraditional, e.g., clickers, podcasts and online lecture slides, teaching tools. Students who felt unprepared for college (25.9%) differed from their peers in their perceived utility of these tools. Both groups of students reported that novel teaching tools were less helpful than traditional teaching tools and while there was no group difference in the perceived usefulness of the novel tools, underprepared students found traditional teaching tools to be less helpful than did prepared students. When the individual tools …

Higher Education Research And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: The Pursuit Of Excellence, Angela Brew

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: The scholarship of teaching and learning includes many activities all of which are focused on critically reflecting on teaching and learning in some way. In the last 10 years or so I have worked at two different universities in Australia both of which have devised ways of rewarding scholarly activities related to teaching. These activities take the form of a) engaging in sustained study and gaining qualifications in teaching in higher education, b) being in receipt of institutional and/or national awards for teaching excellence and c) presenting scholarly work on higher education teaching and learning in conferences and journals. …

Instructors' Decisions That Integrate Inquiry Teaching Into Undergraduate Courses: How Do I Make This Fit?, Iris Alkaher, Erin Dolan Jul 2011

Instructors' Decisions That Integrate Inquiry Teaching Into Undergraduate Courses: How Do I Make This Fit?, Iris Alkaher, Erin Dolan

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this qualitative study, we describe and characterize the pedagogical decisions that three college instructors made to mitigate challenges they faced as they taught by inquiry, as well as the rationale for their decisions and their perceptions of the efficacy of their decisions. We found that instructors made a range of decisions, including reorganizing course content and structure, adding more opportunities for and models of inquiry practice, adding more opportunities for feedback and assessment, and enhancing scaffolding of the inquiry. Notably, single instructional decisions had the capacity to mitigate multiple challenges. The instructors were satisfied with many of their decisions, …

Revealing Student Thinking About Experimental Design And The Roles Of Control Experiments, Jia Shi, Joy M. Power, Michael W. Klymkowsky Jul 2011

Revealing Student Thinking About Experimental Design And The Roles Of Control Experiments, Jia Shi, Joy M. Power, Michael W. Klymkowsky

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Well-designed “controls” distinguish experimental from non-experimental studies. Surprisingly, we found that a high percentage of students had difficulty identifying control experiments even after completing three university-level laboratory courses. To address this issue, we designed and ran a revised cell biology lab course in which students participated in weekly “experimental control exercises.” To measure student understanding of control experiments, we developed a set of assessment questions; these were given to students prior to and following completion of either a standard cell biology lab course or the revised cell biology lab course. Not unexpectedly, the results indicate that the revised course led …

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer Jul 2011

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods inquiry explored how liberal and health professions faculty at one University perceived each College and the relationship between faculties in each of their Colleges. Three faculty members from each of these Colleges were interviewed individually and they then participated in a focus group, discussing prompt statements created from the transcripts of the interviews. The transcripts of the interviews and the focus group were then used to construct a web-based survey that was offered to faculty in both Colleges. Seventy percent of faculty completed the survey. Qualitative and quantitative data clustered into five main themes: 1) faculty largely …

Development Of A High Speed Data Acquisition System For Spark Ignition Engine, Cory Levette Griswold Jul 2011

Development Of A High Speed Data Acquisition System For Spark Ignition Engine, Cory Levette Griswold

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Full engine control can only be accomplished with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control system requiring measurement of variables for which no sensor/instrument is yet available in the Renewable Energy and Engines Laboratory, therefore a less detailed single input single output (SISO) engine model is developed. To develop the engine controller a model of the engine had to first be determined. Known Discrete-Event and Mean-Value models were the first choice, but could not be utilized because of the nature of the single cylinder intake manifold pressure. Therefore an engine model based on experimental data had to be developed. Using Matlab/ Simulink, xPC …

The Effects Of Stereotype Threat On State Levels Of Stigma Consciousness And Overall Performance On A Stereotype-Relevant Task, Gwenith Blount-Nuss Jul 2011

The Effects Of Stereotype Threat On State Levels Of Stigma Consciousness And Overall Performance On A Stereotype-Relevant Task, Gwenith Blount-Nuss

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Situational anxiety surrounding performance has been shown to adversely impact task performance by members of negatively stereotyped groups, creating a stereotype threat effect. This study tested the hypothesis that the anticipation of being stereotyped, known as stigma consciousness, is one of many contributing factors to the expression of stereotype threat effects. One area in which stereotype threat has been shown to exist is in the domain of mathematics, with females being negatively stereotyped in the subject and often underperforming relative to males. In this study, male and female participants were presented with a stereotype prime manipulation and then asked to …

Institutional Difference: A Neglected Consideration In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning?, Chrissie Boughey Jul 2011

Institutional Difference: A Neglected Consideration In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning?, Chrissie Boughey

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: This invited essay considers how thinking about institutional differences can enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning. It does this by drawing on a recent piece of South African research which used data produced as part of a national process of auditing institutions for quality assurance purposes (Boughey, 2009; Boughey 2010; Boughey & McKenna, 2011a; 2011b). Overwhelmingly, the research revealed that, although universities were paying attention to issues related to teaching and learning (and drawing on literature and research produced as part of the scholarship of teaching and learning to do so), little attention had been given to the …

Assessing The Pedagogical Impact Of The Vanth Engineering Research Center On Faculty And Postdoctoral Professionals, Monica F. Cox, James Cawthorne, Nathan Mcneill, Osman Cekic, Matthew Frye, Melissa J. Stacer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

From 1999 to 2007, the Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center focused on improving bioengineering education through the applications of learning science, learning technology, and assessment and evaluation within the domain of bioengineering. This paper discusses results from a survey to explore the impact of the VaNTH experience on participating faculty and postdoctoral professionals. The results note that respondents differed in their familiarity with and applications of dimensions of the “How People Learn” framework and in their operationalization of effective instruction after their participation in VaNTH. Implications for teaching and learning with the context of a Center model are discussed along …

Reconsidering Boyer's Reconsideration: Paradigms, Sharing, And Engagement, David Starr-Glass Jul 2011

Reconsidering Boyer's Reconsideration: Paradigms, Sharing, And Engagement, David Starr-Glass

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Ernest Boyer provided a purpose for a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) although he might not have provided a description of the process. Boyer’s contribution concerned the nature of scholarship and research and, as such, it implicitly questioned existing assumptions, paradigms and epistemologies. Disciplinary paradigms are examined through the work of Thomas Kuhn in order to appreciate their strengths and limitations. An analysis of Boyer’s reconsideration of research and scholarship of engagement then provides purpose and direction for the scholarship of teaching. As an emergent discipline, SoTL finds itself defined and described. In that description there are concerns about …

Using Performance Assessments To Connect Fractions And Rational Expressions: Noyce Scholars As Mentors To Pre-Service Elementary Teachers, Joy W. Darley, Michelle Cawthorn, Marlynn Griffin, Brian P. Koehler, James Lobue Jul 2011

Using Performance Assessments To Connect Fractions And Rational Expressions: Noyce Scholars As Mentors To Pre-Service Elementary Teachers, Joy W. Darley, Michelle Cawthorn, Marlynn Griffin, Brian P. Koehler, James Lobue

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Presentations (1991-2022)

At Georgia Southern University, Noyce scholars are not only being mentored, but they are also serving as mentors to preservice elementary teachers. One topic that proves to be problematic for many students is the conceptual understanding of fractions and rational expressions. Since our Noyce scholars with mathematics degrees will be teaching algebra, it is important that they are fluent with the arithmetic to algebra connection. In addition, it is crucial that these mathematics majors become stakeholders in mathematics education at the elementary school level.

Performance assessments can provide the structure necessary for assisting pre-service elementary teachers in firmly establishing the …
