Efficient Control Of Dc Servomotor Systems Using Backpropagation Neural Networks, Yahia Makableh May 2011

Efficient Control Of Dc Servomotor Systems Using Backpropagation Neural Networks, Yahia Makableh

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

DC motor systems have played an important role in the improvement and development of the industrial revolution, making them the heart of different applications beside AC motor systems. Therefore, the development of a more efficient control strategy that can be used for the control of a DC servomotor system, and a well defined mathematical model that can be used for off line simulation are essential for this type of systems Servomotor systems are known to have nonlinear parameters and dynamic factors, such as backlash, dead zone and Coulomb friction that make the systems hard to control using conventional control methods …

An Examination Of The Association Between The Graduation Coach Program And Georgia's Graduation Rate, Wardell C. Hunter

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

As result of the dropout problem in the United States and in Georgia, many school systems around the nation have placed much emphasis on reducing the incidents of students dropping out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the graduation coach program and Georgia's graduation rate of over a 7 year period of time, 2004-2010. The research sought to determine if differences existed between graduation rates pre the induction of the graduation coach programs and post the induction of the graduation coach program when controlling for variables such as, school locale, free and …

The Curriculum Of Capitalism: Schooled To Profit Or Schooled To Educate, Douglas O. Carroll May 2011

The Curriculum Of Capitalism: Schooled To Profit Or Schooled To Educate, Douglas O. Carroll

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Utilizing a critical pragmatist framework for analysis of the United States public school education, the research suggests the United States public education system perpetuates a curriculum of Capitalism linking with democracy; yet social Capitalism remains remarkably undemocratic as the experience of race, class, and gender contradict the curriculum of public schools. The consequence of these contradictions is perpetuation of racist or sexist stereotypes, a distinct class system delineated by financial, educational, and techno-wealth, a heightened if not profound sense that the American ideal is no longer within reach or a political sham. In sharp contrast to conservative theories of education …

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson May 2011

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is a pathography, my experience as a mother dwelling with illness which began because of my son's illness. The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: to examine my Self as a mother dwelling with illness so that I may begin to work through repressed emotions and to further complicate the conversation begun by Marla Morris (2008) by illuminating the ill person's voice as one which is underrepresented in the canon. This dissertation is written autobiographically and analyzed psychoanalytically. The subjects of chaos, the Self, and motherhood are examined as they apply to my illness. In addition to psychoanalysis, …

Ranking Of Fatigue Data Based Upon Monte Carlo Simulated Confidence Number Figures, Jacob Mcbride May 2011

Ranking Of Fatigue Data Based Upon Monte Carlo Simulated Confidence Number Figures, Jacob Mcbride

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Since fatigue is probabilistic, trends observed in large populations of data are necessary to select materials, compare engineering designs, or establish preventative maintenance schedules. The generation of large experimental fatigue populations, however, is prohibitively time consuming and costly. As a solution a Weibull-based Monte Carlo simulation of fatigue life was developed based upon a failed "bin" model, and five billion fatigue lives were simulated. These fatigue lives were used to generate L10 lives. A model of confidence number was developed dependent upon statistically large samples of simulated L10 fatigue lives, and independent of a limited number of published curves. Using …

Rough Hewn, Jason Mccoy May 2011

Rough Hewn, Jason Mccoy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Rough Hewn is the culmination of my research into aesthetics and form. It is a reflection of my appreciation of the raw surface textures and shapes that can be captured in wood; the "How?" and "What If?" of the objects, materials, and processes that inform my creative development. As I compose my sculptures working with rough-hewn timber, I consider the dichotomy of a material that is considered both utilitarian and beautiful. In my work I utilize scale, texture, and form to create a tangible connection between the object and viewer as I examine the relationship of rectangular forms to the …

Career Academy Implementation: School Leaders Perceptions, Vikki H. Williams May 2011

Career Academy Implementation: School Leaders Perceptions, Vikki H. Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

As educational systems are constantly challenged with public demands to decrease dropout rates and increase student achievement, school reform models are spreading as a form of school improvement across America. Educational reform moves in cycles, and the change has moved to smaller learning communities in an effort to improve education. Smaller Learning Communities (SLC's) have attracted currency in the world of education, and many school districts have adopted this transformational model as a means to support students' academic success. Smaller learning communities alter the internal structure of a traditional high school to small schools within a school. One specific model …

Ego Depletion And Delay Of Gratification, Shrinidhi Subramaniam May 2011

Ego Depletion And Delay Of Gratification, Shrinidhi Subramaniam

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Ego depletion suggests that self-control draws from a limited resource. Therefore, resistance to immediate temptation can be impaired when that resource is depleted. Participants performed a difficult or easy serial subtraction task (cognitive processing) in front of or in the absence of a video camera (social processing). Participants then completed a delay-of-gratification task where they either chose the immediate, small reward of 1 research participation credit or waited for a larger amount of credit. Participants who completed a difficult task while being recorded by a video camera waited a shorter period of time for more credit than those who performed …

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of …

Weak Type Inequalities For Maximal Operators Associated To Double Ergodic Sums, Paul Hagelstein, Alexander M. Stokolos Mar 2011

Weak Type Inequalities For Maximal Operators Associated To Double Ergodic Sums, Paul Hagelstein, Alexander M. Stokolos

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Given an approach region Γ ∈ Z+2 and a pair U, V of commuting nonperiodic measure preserving transformations on a probability space (Ω, Σ, μ), it is shown that either the associated multiparameter ergodic averages of any function in L1(Ω) converge a.e. or that, given a positive increasing function ϕ on [0,∞) that is o(log x) as x → ∞, there exists a function g ∈ Lϕ(L)(Ω) whose associated multiparameter ergodic averages fail to converge a.e.

Effects Of Student-Centered, Inquiry-Based Teaching On Performance, Attitudes, And Efficacy, Brad Bailey, Karen Briggs, Tom Cooper

SoTL Commons Conference

As part of research supported by the Educational Advancement Foundation, the authors conducted a quasi-experimental study comparing the effects of a student-centered and inquiry-based teaching technique, known as a Modified Moore Method or MMM, with those of lecture-based teaching methods. To study the students' attitudes, beliefs and self-efficacy and performance, the students were asked to complete a survey twice each semester and take a common final exam. This panel session includes a description of what MMM entails, what the students and instructors do both in class and out, and how MMM could be used in other classes. We will discuss …
