Explorations Of The Collatz Conjecture (Mod M), Glenn Micah Jackson Jr Apr 2015

Explorations Of The Collatz Conjecture (Mod M), Glenn Micah Jackson Jr

Honors College Theses

The Collatz Conjecture is a deceptively difficult problem recently developed in mathematics. In full, the conjecture states: Begin with any positive integer and generate a sequence as follows: If a number is even, divide it by two. Else, multiply by three and add one. Repetition of this process will eventually reach the value 1. Proof or disproof of this seemingly simple conjecture have remained elusive. However, it is known that if the generated Collatz Sequence reaches a cycle other than 4, 2, 1, the conjecture is disproven. This fact has motivated our search for occurrences of 4, 2, 1, and …

The Benefit Of Field Trips, Michaela D. Kennedy Apr 2015

The Benefit Of Field Trips, Michaela D. Kennedy

Honors College Theses

Episodic memory is commonly described as a person’s unique recall of a specific event (Joordens, 2012, p. 105). Episodic memories can be triggered from senses such as sights and smells. People have been known to have detailed episodic memories, allowing them to remember extremely specific details from witnessed or experienced episodes in their lives. If episodic memory can be so strong in helping people remember given information, it is thought that they may be able to help people retain specific information when learning about new subjects. If this is the case, it is reasonable to wonder whether or not helping …

Novel Photodynamic Therapy Agents: Biochemical Analysis, Eboni D. Pullen

Honors College Theses

Bioinorganic photochemistry is a rapidly advancing research area in the field of bioinorganic chemistry. This project seeks to build upon the growing field by synthesizing and analyzing new photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents. There are three major generations of PDT agents. The first generation consists of chemically modified natural hematoporphyrins, which are not of great interest in the phototherapeutic field due to their low distinguishability between tumor cells and healthy cells, and extended skin photosensitivity in patients. The second generation consists of organic dyes, aromatic hydrocarbons, polypyrolics complexes, and semi-conductors, but is also not of much interest due to the same …

Gallai-Ramsey And Vertex Proper Connection Numbers, Emily C. Chizmar Apr 2015

Gallai-Ramsey And Vertex Proper Connection Numbers, Emily C. Chizmar

Honors College Theses

Given a complete graph G, we consider two separate scenarios. First, we consider the minimum number N such that every coloring of G using exactly k colors contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic star on t vertices. This number is known for small cases and generalized for larger cases for a fixed k. Second, we introduce the vertex proper connection number of a graph and provide a relationship to the chromatic number of minimally connected subgraphs. Also a notion of total proper connection is introduced and a question is asked about a possible relationship between the total proper …

Using The Stroop Effect To Examine The Effect Of Words To Which Humans Are Sensitive On Cognitive Conflict, Stacia Fritz Apr 2015

Using The Stroop Effect To Examine The Effect Of Words To Which Humans Are Sensitive On Cognitive Conflict, Stacia Fritz

Honors College Theses

The purpose of experiment one was to test the effects of drink consumed (glucose, artificial sweetener, or water) and stimuli (food or non-food) on cognitive conflict. Glucose has been known to better cognitive functioning, and preoccupation with food worsens cognitive functioning on a food-related task. We hypothesized that participants who received glucose and non-food stimuli will perform best on the cognitive tests, and participants who received aspartame and food-stimuli will perform worst on the cognitive tests. Participants were each given an 8 oz. drink to consume, shown six minutes of stimuli, performed an “X-word” Stroop test, shown six more minutes …

Cross Disciplinary Perceptions Of The Computational Thinking Among Freshmen Engineering Students, Rami J. Haddad, Youakim Kalaani Apr 2015

Cross Disciplinary Perceptions Of The Computational Thinking Among Freshmen Engineering Students, Rami J. Haddad, Youakim Kalaani

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyzed the perception of Computational Thinking among engineering students from three engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil) and correlated their performance with their discipline. The goal of this analysis is to determine whether structuring discipline-specific Computational Thinking courses can improve the retention or having a diverse group of students in this course is more beneficial by allowing multidisciplinary interaction. This analysis was quantitatively verified by assessing the students' performance in over 40 different sections of Computing for Engineers course taught from Fall 2012 to Spring 2014. Our sample consisted of 861 students (142 Civil, 484 Mechanical, …

Hyperbolic Resonances Of Metasurface Cavities, David Keene, Maxim Durach Apr 2015

Hyperbolic Resonances Of Metasurface Cavities, David Keene, Maxim Durach

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We propose a new class of optical resonator structures featuring one or two metasurface reflectors or metacavities and predict that such resonators support novel hyperbolic resonances. As an example of such resonances we introduce hyperbolic Tamm plasmons (HTPs) and hyperbolic Fabry-Perot resonances (HFPs). The hyperbolic optical modes feature low-loss incident power re-distribution over TM and TE polarization output channels, clover-leaf anisotropic dispersion, and other unique properties which are tunable and are useful for multiple applications.

Pubh 7090 A - Selected Topics In Public Health: Advanced Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung

College of Public Health: Faculty Syllabi (2014-2021)

This course covers the use of mathematical and computational approaches to study infectious diseases. We will discuss models that address both the dynamics of infectious disease spread through populations and the dynamics of pathogens inside an infected individual. Students will learn how to build and analyze models for a variety of human and animal diseases. We will look at the impact of interventions on disease outcomes. Students will learn how to interpret results of modeling studies to make informed public health policy decisions.
