A Hybrid Simulation And Hands-On Experimentation For Electric Machines Laboratory, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Bikiran Guha
A Hybrid Simulation And Hands-On Experimentation For Electric Machines Laboratory, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Bikiran Guha
Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we presented a hybrid approach to integrate hands-on experimentation with virtual simulation environment in an Electric Machines course. This was achieved by using Lab-Volt’s LVSIM-EMS software as a platform for the virtual simulation environment. The use of this simulation software allowed students to freely experiment and test various circuit designs before they actually conduct any physical experimentations. This hybrid approach helped promote lab safety and also avoid damaging the equipment due to random testing. In addition, it allowed for more student-centric experiments with less hazardous lab environment. A new experiment to derive the equivalent-circuits of a transformer …

Restricted Sum Formula Of Alternating Euler Sums, Jianqiang Zhao
Restricted Sum Formula Of Alternating Euler Sums, Jianqiang Zhao
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study restricted sum formulas involving alternating Euler sums which are defined by ζ(s1,…,sd;ε1,…,εd)=∑n1>⋯>nd≥1εn11⋯εnddns11⋯nsdd,
for all positive integers s 1,…,s d and ε 1=±1,…,ε d =±1 with (s 1,ε 1)≠(1,1). We call w=s 1+⋯+s d the weight and d the depth. When ε j =−1 we say the jth component is alternating. We first consider Euler sums of the following special type: ξ(2s1,…,2sd)=ζ(2s1,…,2sd;(−1)s1,…,(−1)sd).
For d≤n, let Ξ(2n,d) be the sum of all ξ(2s 1,…,2s d ) …

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this paper, the local well-posedness of periodic fifth order dispersive equation with nonlinear term P1(u)∂xu + P2(u)∂xu∂xu. Here P1(u) and P2(u) are polynomials of u. We also get some new Strichartz estimates.

Isomorphism And Similarity For 2-Generation Pedigrees, Haitao Jiang, Guohui Lin, Weitian Tong, Daming Zhu, Binhai Zhu
Isomorphism And Similarity For 2-Generation Pedigrees, Haitao Jiang, Guohui Lin, Weitian Tong, Daming Zhu, Binhai Zhu
Computing: Faculty Publications
We consider the emerging problem of comparing the similarity between (unlabeled) pedigrees. More specifically, we focus on the simplest pedigrees, namely, the 2-generation pedigrees. We show that the isomorphism testing for two 2-generation pedigrees is GI-hard. If the 2-generation pedigrees are monogamous (i.e., each individual at level-1 can mate with exactly one partner) then the isomorphism testing problem can be solved in polynomial time. We then consider the problem by relaxing it into an NP-complete decomposition problem which can be formulated as the Minimum Common Integer Pair Partition (MCIPP) problem, which we show to be FPT by exploiting a property …

Labeling And Comparison Of Isomeric Tree-Like Polyphenyl Systems, Tabitha Williford, Alex Collins, Shainaz Landge, Hua Wang
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Tree-like polyphenyl systems form an important class of compounds in chemistry, in particular material science and polymers. The importance can be seen in LEDs, transmitters, and electronics. In recent years, many extremal results regarding such systems under specific constraints have been reported. More specifically are the sub-categories of such systems with extremal Wiener indices. In this article, we provide a labelling of the vertices on each hexagon (i.e., the corresponding benzene ring), which facilitates the illustration of a treelike polyphenyl system with its corresponding tree structure. This approach helps to characterize the extremal tree-like polyphenyl systems with respect to the …

Luncheon Keynote Address #1: An Engineer's Education And It's Use In Aerospace, Vu Nguyen
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
A self-professed nerd always imagined that he would work in the computer or information technology industries, but by luck ended up with a career as an aerospace engineer. Despite a lack of formal training in aerospace, the fundamentals of an engineering education laid the path for a successful career. Vu will describe the products that are designed and built at Gulfstream and explain part of the engineering organization. He will then go through an example of the types of problems that he encountered in his work and what aspects of his education were necessary for the workplace. He will discuss …
Using Mathematics Literature With Prospective Secondary Mathematics Teachers, Christopher Charlie Jett
Using Mathematics Literature With Prospective Secondary Mathematics Teachers, Christopher Charlie Jett
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
Literature in mathematics has been found to foster positive dispositions about mathematics teaching and learning. With this caveat in mind, the following research question guided this work: How might the incorporation of literature through literature circles influence prospective secondary mathematics teachers’ pedagogical paradigms? The author used survey and reflection data to ascertain how literature influenced prospective secondary mathematics teachers’ ideas. Literature texts, students’ narratives, and survey data are shared to answer the research question, discuss implications, and offer recommendations for future work.
This research project was completed during spring 2014 and is designed for secondary STEM K–12 practitioners and university …

Visual Modeling Of Fractions And Ratio, Arsalan Wares
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
The purpose of this talk is to illustrate how concepts of fractions and ratio can be explained visually to young students. A significant part of the talk will involve watching videos of preservice teachers at Valdosta State University solve challenging mathematical problems visually.
The primary audience of this session are mathematics teachers, university professors who teach preservice teachers. The participants will be asked to solve some the problems on their own before and after they watch the student videos. The participants will get a chance to see how mathematical problems can be explained in multiple ways. They will also get …
