The Imperative Of The School Choice Option Of Nclb: In Whose Interest?, Teri Jones Jun 2015

The Imperative Of The School Choice Option Of Nclb: In Whose Interest?, Teri Jones

Georgia Educational Researcher

Since No Child Left Behind (NCLB) became law, educators have faced challenges trying to protect the common good of a public education while, at the same time, developing and/or reviewing proposals to provide for the school choice option of NCLB. In the debate over market-driven education versus traditional public education, many times, the ideologies behind each approach come into direct conflict. Educators and legislators need to be able to identify when privileged interests are at the core of reforms or if the education of each student is the primary interest being served. This project provides a real life portrait of …

Lead Acid Battery Modeling For Pv Applications, Rami J. Haddad, Adel El-Shahat, Youakim Kalaani Jun 2015

Lead Acid Battery Modeling For Pv Applications, Rami J. Haddad, Adel El-Shahat, Youakim Kalaani

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Lead-Acid batteries continue to be the preferred choice for backup energy storage systems. However, the inherent variability in the manufacturing and component design processes affect the performance of the manufactured battery. Therefore, the developed Lead-Acid battery models are not very flexible to model this type of variability. In this paper, a new and flexible modeling of a Lead-Acid battery is presented. Using curve fitting techniques, the model parameters were derived as a function of the battery’s state of charge based on a modified Thevenin equivalent model. In addition, the charge and discharge characteristics of the derived model were investigated and …

Tempo-Containing Romp Polymers As A Component For Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injuries, Cameron H. Feriante May 2015

Tempo-Containing Romp Polymers As A Component For Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injuries, Cameron H. Feriante

Honors College Theses

During a traumatic brain injury (TBI) sustained in combination with hemorrhagic shock the brain undergoes anoxic conditions resulting from swelling and blood loss. Traditional intravenous solutions are used to replace blood volume, but are unable to replace the blood’s oxygen carrying capacity. A proposed treatment based on isotonic solutions containing hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOC’s) which were intended to provide readily available oxygen was developed. However, cell-free hemoglobin was shown to have excessive oxidative potential. Polynitroxylated Pegylated Hemoglobin (PNPH) was developed to address this shortcoming. During PNPH synthesis a combination of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxidanyl (TEMPO), is bound to the …

Families Of Weighted Sum Formulas For Multiple Zeta Values, Li Guo, Peng Lei, Jianqiang Zhao May 2015

Families Of Weighted Sum Formulas For Multiple Zeta Values, Li Guo, Peng Lei, Jianqiang Zhao

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Euler's sum formula and its multi-variable and weighted generalizations form a large class of the identities of multiple zeta values. In this paper, we prove a family of identities involving Bernoulli numbers and apply them to obtain infinitely many weighted sum formulas for double zeta values and triple zeta values where the weight coefficients are given by symmetric polynomials. We give a general conjecture in arbitrary depth at the end of the paper.

Estimation In The Exponentiated Kumaraswamy Dagum Distribution With Censored Samples, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang Apr 2015

Estimation In The Exponentiated Kumaraswamy Dagum Distribution With Censored Samples, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In a recent note, Huang and Oluyede (2014) proposed a new model called the exponentiated Kumaraswamy Dagum (EKD) distribution with applications to income and lifetime data. In this note, this distribution is shown to be a very competitive model for describing censored observations in lifetime reliability problems. This work shows that in certain cases, the EKD distribution performs better than other parametric model such as the exponentiated Kumaraswamy Weibull distribution and its sub-models, which include some of the commonly used models in survival analysis and reliability analysis, such as the exponentiated Weibull, Weibull and exponential distributions.

An ever-growing society that becomes more and more dependent on a finite energy source will eventually exceed its supply. Fossil fuel quantities are continuously decreasing and new solutions are needed. According to the United States Department of Transportation, over 10 billion gallons of airline fuels have been consumed in each of the past 15 years with some years over 13 billion gallons. In the meantime, fuel costs have …

Packing Densities Of Colored And Non-Colored Patterns, Matthew R. Just Apr 2015

Packing Densities Of Colored And Non-Colored Patterns, Matthew R. Just

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Pattern packing concerns finding an optimal permutation that contains the maximum number of occurrences of a given pattern and computing the corresponding packing density. In many instances such an optimal permutation can be characterized directly and the number of occurrences of the pattern in interest may be enumerated explicitly. In more complicated patterns a direct characterization may be more challenging, however computational results for long permutations can help provide an indirect characterization of the general form of an optimal permutation. Much work has been done on the study of pattern packing in layered patterns, as the optimal permutation of a …

Learning Disabilities: Assessing Stereotypes, Metastereotypes, And Stigma Consciousness, Caitlin A. Barkley Apr 2015

Learning Disabilities: Assessing Stereotypes, Metastereotypes, And Stigma Consciousness, Caitlin A. Barkley

Honors College Theses

Past research has shown that students with a learning disability (LD) diagnosis face more obstacles that just their disability. The purpose of this study was twofold. The first purpose was to examine the perceived social stigma that students with a learning disability experience in college. The second purpose was to assess the existing stereotypes about students with a learning disability. Four undergraduate students with a LD and 101 students without a LD completed a questionnaire designed to assess the prevalence of stereotypes, metastereotypes, and stigmas on the college campus in regards to those with a learning disability. Students with a …

Developmental Toxicity Of Tetrakis (Hydromethyl) Phosphonium Chloride (Thpc) In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Embryos, Lan L. Nguyen Apr 2015

Developmental Toxicity Of Tetrakis (Hydromethyl) Phosphonium Chloride (Thpc) In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Embryos, Lan L. Nguyen

Honors College Theses

Tetrakis (hydromethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) is a tetrakis (hydromethyl) phosphonium salt commonly used by the textile industry and is polymerized onto cotton fabrics to provide a flame-retardant finish. Traces of THPC were found in the Ogeechee River, a 294 mile-long black river in Georgia, and could have been a toxin contributing to the mass killing of aquatic animals in May 2011. THPC has been known to be carcinogenic and cause other systemic toxicity in various mammalian animals. However given that the chemical is mostly discharged in natural waters, the environmental impact of the discharge on water quality and there by …

The Synthesis And Biological Activity Of Iron Binding Motifs, Rachel Burke Apr 2015

The Synthesis And Biological Activity Of Iron Binding Motifs, Rachel Burke

Honors College Theses

Iron is an essential mineral that plays a key role in the oxygen transporting molecule hemoglobin. Iron also helps muscles store and use oxygen. Excess iron in the body can attract electrons, creating harmful oxygen radicals. Iron overload can be caused by several factors such as genetics, age, gender, and having received multiple red blood cell transfusions. Excess iron can lead to many diseases, such as arthritis, liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and several forms of cancer. Iron-chelating therapies work by binding free iron in the bloodstream and by reducing the amount of iron bound in transferrin, the iron transporting molecule. …

An Examination Of Volunteer Motivations And Characteristics Between Required Volunteer Service And Non-Required Volunteer Service In College Students: An Exploratory Study, Amanda C. Bastien Apr 2015

An Examination Of Volunteer Motivations And Characteristics Between Required Volunteer Service And Non-Required Volunteer Service In College Students: An Exploratory Study, Amanda C. Bastien

Honors College Theses

Volunteerism in the undergraduate years can enhance students’ academic development, civic responsibility, and life skills (Astin & Sax, 1998). Whether a student volunteers in high school can be a predictor of continued volunteerism in college and later in life (Planty & Regnier, 2003; Astin & Sax, 1998). Participants of this study were 283 college students enrolled in first year seminar courses at a large university in the Southeastern United States. Participants completed a questionnaire developed by Gage and Thapa (2012) which included the Volunteer Function Inventory (Clary et al. 1998) that served to investigate the volunteering characteristics and volunteering motivations …
