A Knowledge-Based Topic Modeling Approach For Automatic Topic Labeling, Mehdi Allahyari, Seyedamin Pouriyeh, Krys Kochut, Hamid Reza Arabnia Jan 2017

A Knowledge-Based Topic Modeling Approach For Automatic Topic Labeling, Mehdi Allahyari, Seyedamin Pouriyeh, Krys Kochut, Hamid Reza Arabnia

Computing: Faculty Publications

Probabilistic topic models, which aim to discover latent topics in text corpora define each document as a multinomial distributions over topics and each topic as a multinomial distributions over words. Although, humans can infer a proper label for each topic by looking at top representative words of the topic but, it is not applicable for machines. Automatic Topic Labeling techniques try to address the problem. The ultimate goal of topic labeling techniques are to assign interpretable labels for the learned topics. In this paper, we are taking concepts of ontology into consideration instead of words alone to improve the quality …

Reimagining The Stacks: Classroom Technology And Library Collaboration For Writing In The Disciplines, Jossalyn Larson, Daniel C. Reardon Jan 2017

Reimagining The Stacks: Classroom Technology And Library Collaboration For Writing In The Disciplines, Jossalyn Larson, Daniel C. Reardon

Journal of Student Success in Writing (Archived)

This article details the process by which one university redesigned a first year writing course to better promote discipline-specific and best-practice research techniques. The program offers experiential learning activities through scholarly collaboration, using library staff as mentors, producing an open-access peer-reviewed student journal, and emphasizing face-to-face interaction of peer research communities. It has the potential to establish for students in high school, community colleges and universities that research writing is fundamentally about joining and contributing to a conversation.

Multiple Solutions With Constant Sign Of A Dirichlet Problem For A Class Of Elliptic Systems With Variable Exponent Growth, Li Yin, Jinghua Yao, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao Jan 2017

Multiple Solutions With Constant Sign Of A Dirichlet Problem For A Class Of Elliptic Systems With Variable Exponent Growth, Li Yin, Jinghua Yao, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present here, in the system setting, a new set of growth conditions under which we manage to use a novel method to verify the Cerami compactness condition. By localization argument, decomposition technique and variational methods, we are able to show the existence of multiple solutions with constant sign for the problem without the well-known Ambrosetti--Rabinowitz type growth condition. More precisely, we manage to show that the problem admits four, six and infinitely many solutions respectively.

Working As Partners: Course Development By A Student–Teacher Team, Charlotta Bengtson, Mikaela Ahlkvist, William Ekeroth, Astrid Nilsen-Moe, Nathalie Proos Vedin, Katerina Rodiuchkina, Sofie Ye, Marcus Lundberg

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A first-year undergraduate course at Uppsala University has been redesigned in a process exploring different levels of student participation. In the first part of the project, the student voice was heard through interviews focusing on the role of the course in the degree program. In the second part, a student-teacher team was formed to develop course curriculum and teaching material in partnership. Among the implemented changes were new seminars focusing on conceptual understanding, redesign of all lectures to include active student participation, and a change of the course literature. The redesigned course significantly increased student satisfaction compared to previous years. …

Not-So-Critical Friends: Graduate Student Instructors And Peer Feedback, Daniel L. Reinholz Jan 2017

Not-So-Critical Friends: Graduate Student Instructors And Peer Feedback, Daniel L. Reinholz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Graduate student instructors (henceforth, instructors) play a crucial role in teaching early STEM courses. Thus, professional development for these instructors addresses an urgent need to improve STEM student success. This paper focuses on a semester-long professional learning community in which six mathematics graduate student instructors engaged in regular cycles of peer observation, feedback, and reflection. In contrast to other professional development work, this approach emphasized that instructors give, not just receive, peer feedback. Analyses of post-semester interviews indicated that all instructors enhanced their noticing of students. The interviews also highlighted the challenges of providing critical, supportive feedback.

Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt Jan 2017

Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Most new teachers are expected to develop a teaching philosophy statement (TPS). In the present paper, we describe some of the major functions of a TPS and how it can be beneficial to the professional development of teacher candidates. We then describe a case example of a Residency I program and how the features of that program help teacher candidates write an effective TPS. Seventy-three senior-level teacher candidates at a large public, comprehensive southeastern U.S. university participated in the study. At the end of their Residency I semester, they completed a survey in which they rated the importance and influence …

A Zariski-Local Notion Of F-Total Acyclicity For Complexes Of Sheaves, Lars Winther Christensen, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob Jan 2017

A Zariski-Local Notion Of F-Total Acyclicity For Complexes Of Sheaves, Lars Winther Christensen, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We study a notion of total acyclicity for complexes of flat sheaves over a scheme. It is Zariski-local—i.e. it can be verified on any open affine covering of the scheme—and for sheaves over a quasi-compact semi-separated scheme it agrees with the categorical notion. In particular, it agrees, in their setting, with the notion studied by Murfet and Salarian for sheaves over a noetherian semi-separated scheme. As part of the study we recover, and in several cases extend the validity of, recent results on existence of covers and precovers in categories of sheaves. One consequence is the existence of an adjoint …

Gorenstein Flat And Projective (Pre)Covers, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob, Sinem Odabasi

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We consider a right coherent ring R. We prove that the class of Gorenstein flat complexes is covering in the category of complexes of left R-modules Ch(R). When R is also left n-perfect, we prove that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is special precovering in Ch(R).

Modelling And Simulation Of Grid Connected Lithium-Ion Battery Using Homer, Shantu Ghose, Adel El-Shahat Jan 2017

Modelling And Simulation Of Grid Connected Lithium-Ion Battery Using Homer, Shantu Ghose, Adel El-Shahat

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In order to improve battery technology understanding the capacity fading method in batteries is very important. Battery models can be used to predict their behavior under various operating conditions. Here we proposed a simple dynamic model of lithium-ion battery with MATLAB/Simulink to observe the output characteristics of this energy storage device. Dynamic simulations are carried out, including the observation of the changes in battery terminal output voltage under different discharging/charging, temperature and cycling conditions. The simulation studies are presented for proving that the model is useful. At the end we will use this energy storage device to interconnect with HOMER. …

“Contemporary Breadlines”: A Field Study Of Fast-Food Drive-Thru Service Delivery, Jon M. Martin Jan 2017

“Contemporary Breadlines”: A Field Study Of Fast-Food Drive-Thru Service Delivery, Jon M. Martin

AMTP Proceedings 2017

This study focuses upon US fast-food drive-thru delivery, assesses its cycle times, identifies its common delays and inefficiencies, and proposes solutions for improvement. The author, having become a live-alone bachelor since 2012 admittedly has routinely been a regular fast-food consumer, and as a researcher has over the past 4 years convenience-tallied this field study of fast-food drive-thru delivery. The average drive-thru wait time for these fast-food establishments was .81 minutes with average processing times of 3.6 minutes for a total average of 4.45 minutes with an average standard deviation of 2.1 minutes. This data suggests statistically (assuming a normal distribution) …

An Assessment Of Engagement, Self-Pacing And Learning In A Flipped Marketing Classroom: An Exploratory Study, James R. Shock, Jill K. Maher Jan 2017

An Assessment Of Engagement, Self-Pacing And Learning In A Flipped Marketing Classroom: An Exploratory Study, James R. Shock, Jill K. Maher

AMTP Proceedings 2017

This study examines the possible impact of engagement and self-pacing on student learning in a flipped classroom environment. Survey responses from 33 students were used in this exploratory study. Results indicate that engagement and self-pacing showed significance, impacting self-reported learning. This preliminary study suggests a flipped classroom improves student learning in marketing. It is expected that a larger sample size with improved measures will uncover other relationships within the flipped classroom model.
