Student Success Is Impacted By Not Attending Gateway Quantitative Classes: A Pilot Study, Michael Latta, James Solazzo, Dennis Rauch

AMTP Proceedings 2017

Universities are charged with equipping the next generation of graduates with the skills and knowledge to benefit both the businesses they will work in. Analytics are the skills needed by both for profit and non-profit operating businesses. For example, in August of 2013, Forbes printed a post on the Forbes Insights blog by Daniel Keherer titled ‘Analysis Shows Jump in Marketing Analytics Jobs.’ The Definitive Guide to Marketing Metrics and Analytics (Dholakia, 2015) has been freely made available by Marketo. Harvard Business School Press has also published a book titled ‘Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning,’ by Harris …

Supporting Metacognitive Awareness And Strategy Use Through Digital Photography In A Rural Title I School, Antonio P. Gutierrez De Blume, Mete Akcaoglu, Wendy L. Chambers

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

The Photography and Media Literacy Project (PMLP) was an after-school program designed to teach fourth and fifth grade children about the science and art of photography in a Title I school in rural southeast Georgia. Through the completion of a problem-based applied project, we endeavored to further enhance and develop students’ media literacy, critical thinking, and metacognitive skills. The project involved having students consider some aspect of their environment (i.e., a problem from the natural, physical, school or social environment) and develop a media presentation about the topic (e.g., a movie), which included images that they took (with iPods that …

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Latinos represent a significant percentage of the U.S. population; yet, they continue to experience substantial educational challenges in society. The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers Latino students face in pursuit of educational opportunity and the important role school counselors and school psychologists can play in preparing them for life after high school, whether it be participation in the workforce or attendance at a postsecondary institution. Policy recommendations are provided for educators and policymakers at the secondary and postsecondary levels. Moreover, practice recommendations are offered for school counselors and school psychologists at the secondary level.

Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An Dec 2016

Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An

Georgia Educational Researcher

In this paper, we—one mathematics teacher educator and one social studies teacher educator—describe a project where we collaborated to model teaching integrated mathematics and social studies for social justice in our methods courses. We encountered varied challenges in our efforts to prepare teacher candidates for social-justice-oriented lessons. These challenges included teacher candidates’ perception of authority/credibility of their professors who were foreign females from the “Third World”, teacher candidates’ deficit views on minoritized students, and the limited time and resources for teacher collaboration in teacher education. Despite these challenges, we believe this kind of project is necessary to move forward in …

Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez Dec 2016

Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez

Georgia Educational Researcher

Writing in mathematics provides students with the opportunity to think critically about and reflect on their experiences while solving problems. While many studies have documented the benefit of writing in math, it is not clear which instructional methods should be used to help students learn how to use writing to support learning. In this study, we take a constructivist approach to building students understanding of effective writing by developing a series of active, student-centered lessons. The findings indicate that students wrote more effectively after the instructional sequence; in particular, they were better able to explain their reasoning and to make …

The Every Student Succeeds Act (Essa): What It Means For Educators Of Students At Risk, Cordelia D. Zinskie, Dan W. Rea

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This editorial perspective examines some ways that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which becomes operational in the 2017–2018 school year, may enhance the capacity of educators to help students and schools at risk of underperforming. It also addresses some of the challenges that educators will face under ESSA in ensuring success for all students. We highlight aspects of ESSA that may be of most interest to our readers including the broadened definition of academic success, expansion of subgroups for data reporting, emphasis on evidence-based research and practice, focus on continuous improvement, and need for increased educator understanding of research …

Minimization And Eulerian Formulation Of Differential Geometry Based Nonpolar Multiscale Solvation Models, Zhan Chen Dec 2016

Minimization And Eulerian Formulation Of Differential Geometry Based Nonpolar Multiscale Solvation Models, Zhan Chen

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this work, the existence of a global minimizer for the previous Lagrangian formulation of nonpolar solvation model proposed in [1] has been proved. One of the proofs involves a construction of a phase field model that converges to the Lagrangian formulation. Moreover, an Eulerian formulation of nonpolar solvation model is proposed and implemented under a similar parameterization scheme to that in [1]. By doing so, the connection, similarity and difference between the Eulerian formulation and its Lagrangian counterpart can be analyzed. It turns out that both of them have a great potential in solvation prediction for nonpolar molecules, while …

Extension Groups For Dg Modules, Saeed Nasseh, Sean Sather-Wagstaff Dec 2016

Extension Groups For Dg Modules, Saeed Nasseh, Sean Sather-Wagstaff

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Let M and N be differential graded (DG) modules over a positively graded commutative DG algebra A. We show that the Ext-groups ExtiA(M,N) defined in terms of semi-projective resolutions are not in general isomorphic to the Yoneda Ext-groups YExtiA(M,N) given in terms of equivalence classes of extensions. On the other hand, we show that these groups are isomorphic when the first DG module is semi-projective.

An Assessment Of Data Related To Inspections Of Risk Factors For Public Swimming Pools, Shanita Shack, Maurice Redmond, R. Christopher Rustin Dec 2016

An Assessment Of Data Related To Inspections Of Risk Factors For Public Swimming Pools, Shanita Shack, Maurice Redmond, R. Christopher Rustin

Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is mandated to ensure that public swimming pools are safe for those who use them. This mandate is carried out by the DPH and local environmental health professionals through regulations and inspections. In 2015, legislation was introduced proposing to reduce the authority of the DPH to inspect certain pool types (apartments, subdivision, condominiums) and thus reduce regulatory protections in place for swimmers. To ensure that the DPH had current information on the risks associated with pools, the EH team, with assistance from a graduate student, analyzed inspection data to evaluate risk factors …

What’S The State Of Praise In The High School Classroom?, Adrienne Stuckey

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Of the available classroom and home reinforcers for desired student behavior, one that is free, easy to administer, and can contribute to positive interactions for both students and adults is the use of Behavior-Specific Praise (BSP; Elswick & Casey, 2011; Gable et al., 2009; Sutherland, 2000). However, researchers have for decades overlooked its possible effectiveness for high school students with and without disabilities, as demonstrated by the paucity of available studies into teacher use of BSP in high schools (e.g., Hawkins & Heflin, 2011; Simonson et al., 2010). One possible reason may rest simply on adults’ beliefs that high school …

5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling Nov 2016

5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Five-point scales have been used in treating pain, anger, anxiety and educationally for children on the Autism Spectrum. Because 5-point scales are visual and match abstract ideas with numbers, they are well-suited for use with children of all ages. They can easily be implemented in a variety of settings, including by parents at home. Participants will learn how to develop, use, and monitor 5-point scale interventions; see different case studies applications; and explore applications within an RTI/MTSS framework. Case studies for individual and class-wide intervention from grades PK – 12 will be shared.

“Pbis Teams Suggest Training For Secondary And Tertiary Prevention”, Kiarra Givhan, Kathryn Leavitt

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) uses a multi-tiered, problem-solving framework with evidence-based strategies to promote positive student outcomes (Sugai and Simonsen, 2012, p.2). The secondary (Tier 2) and tertiary (Tier 3) levels of PBIS provide support to students who are not responding to school-wide and class-wide strategies. To get a better idea of how Tiers 2 and 3 are implemented, and what could make implementation better, a qualitative study was conducted with PBIS Teams. PBIS Teams represent an integral part of implementation, and it is important to gain insight from those who play such a role.

This presentation will …
