Using Color, Comics, And Creativity To Cultivate Comfort For Military-Connected Kids, Kasey L. Bozeman, Sophia Rodriguez

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

Since the events of Sept 11, 2001, military service members have experienced frequent war-zone deployments, causing issues of separation, anxiety, and stress in military youth. As part of a 4-H project, a high school student and military teen developed and implemented an activity that uses art to allow military-connected children to express their feelings in a safe, inclusive environment. As someone who has experienced the effects of having a parent in the military, the 4-H student worked with a licensed counselor to develop age-appropriate art activities that are engaging and fun and allow military children to share their experiences. Using …

Using Ranked Auxiliary Covariate As A More Efficient Sampling Design For Ancova Model: Analysis Of A Psychological Intervention To Buttress Resilience, Rajai Jabrah, Hani Samawi, Robert Vogel, Haresh Rochani, Daniel Linder Mar 2017

Using Ranked Auxiliary Covariate As A More Efficient Sampling Design For Ancova Model: Analysis Of A Psychological Intervention To Buttress Resilience, Rajai Jabrah, Hani Samawi, Robert Vogel, Haresh Rochani, Daniel Linder

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

Drawing a sample can be costly or time consuming in some studies. However, it may be possible to rank the sampling units according to some baseline auxiliary covariates, which are easily obtainable, and/or cost efficient. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a method to achieve this goal. In this paper, we propose a modified approach of the RSS method to allocate units into an experimental study that compares L groups. Computer simulation estimates the empirical nominal values and the empirical power values for the test procedure of comparing L different groups using modified RSS based on the regression approach in analysis …

Design Studies And Aerodynamic Performance Analysis Of Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade For Nano-Grid Applications, Md Mehedi Hasan, Adel El-Shahat, Mosfequr Rahman Mar 2017

Design Studies And Aerodynamic Performance Analysis Of Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade For Nano-Grid Applications, Md Mehedi Hasan, Adel El-Shahat, Mosfequr Rahman

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Wind energy, being easily accessible, environmentally friendly, and being cost effectively, has become the world's one of popular growing renewable energy sources of electricity generation. Among all of the wind turbines, Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) is considered as leading technology due to its high efficiency. However, to spread this technology to mankind it is needed to develop turbine in this way that people can use it individually and comfortably. This kind of thinking accelerates the advancement of integration of wind turbine with Nano grid concept. Although great progress has been achieved in the wind technology, there is still scope …

Selected On-Demand Medical Applications Of 3d-Printing For Long-Duration Manned Space Missions, Andres L. Carrano

Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)

Recent technological advances in the area of Additive Manufacturing (i.e. 3D printing) allow for exploration of their use within long-duration manned space missions. Among the many potential application domains, medical and dental fabrication in support of crew health is of interest to NASA’s Advanced Exploration Systems directorate. A classification of medical events with their associated response timeline discern between those applications where current 3D printing technologies can provide adequate support. Products and devices that require on-demand fabrication (due to the high level of personal customization) but that can wait for a reasonable (e.g. few hours) fabrication time are the most …

Gorenstein Projective Precovers, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob, Katelyn A. Coggins Feb 2017

Gorenstein Projective Precovers, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob, Katelyn A. Coggins

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We prove that the class of Gorenstein projective modules is special precovering over any left GF-closed ring such that every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension. This class of rings includes (strictly) Gorenstein rings, commutative noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension, as well as right coherent and left n-perfect rings. In Sect. 4 we give examples of left GF-closed rings that have the desired properties (every Gorenstein projective module is Gorenstein flat and every Gorenstein flat has finite Gorenstein projective dimension) and that are not right coherent.

Ghost Series And A Motivated Proof Of The Andrews–Bressoud Identities, Shashank Kanade, James Lepowsky, Matthew C. Russell, Andrew Sills Feb 2017

Ghost Series And A Motivated Proof Of The Andrews–Bressoud Identities, Shashank Kanade, James Lepowsky, Matthew C. Russell, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present what we call a “motivated proof” of the Andrews–Bressoud partition identities for even moduli. A “motivated proof” of the Rogers–Ramanujan identities was given by G.E. Andrews and R.J. Baxter, and this proof was generalized to the odd-moduli case of Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. Recently, a “motivated proof” of the somewhat analogous Göllnitz–Gordon–Andrews identities has been found. In the present work, we introduce “shelves” of formal series incorporating what we call “ghost series,” which allow us to pass from one shelf to the next via natural recursions, leading to our motivated proof. We anticipate that …

On Gorenstein Fiber Products And Applications, Saeed Nasseh, Ryo Takahashi, Keller Vandebogert Jan 2017

On Gorenstein Fiber Products And Applications, Saeed Nasseh, Ryo Takahashi, Keller Vandebogert

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We show that a non-trivial fiber product S×kT of commutative noetherian local rings S,T with a common residue field k is Gorenstein if and only if it is a hypersurface of dimension 1. In this case, both S and T are regular rings of dimension 1. We also give some applications of this result.

Assessment Of The Link Between In Utero Exposure To 2-Aminoanthracene (2aa) And Type-1 Diabetes (T1d), Christopher A. Mays, Daniel A. Hunter, Wilson Yau, Worlanyo E. Gato Jan 2017

Assessment Of The Link Between In Utero Exposure To 2-Aminoanthracene (2aa) And Type-1 Diabetes (T1d), Christopher A. Mays, Daniel A. Hunter, Wilson Yau, Worlanyo E. Gato

Chemistry: Faculty Publications (1990-2023)

Background: A recent diabetes report revealed an increased incidence in diabetes including type 1-diabetes (T1D). The increase in the numbers of T1D incidences are thought to be related to environmental reasons such as the exposure to environmental chemicals including arylamine 2-aminoanthracene (2AA). T1D is an autoimmune disease of the pancreatic islet in which insulin-producing beta cells are destroyed by auto-reactive T-cells and monocytic cells.

Methods: The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which 2AA exposure contributes to T1D. Three groups of pregnant Sprague Dawley dams ingested various concentrations of dietary 2AA from gestation through …
