The Importance Of Extracurricular Stem Activities For Students With Disabilities, Karin Fisher May 2017

The Importance Of Extracurricular Stem Activities For Students With Disabilities, Karin Fisher

Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

Students with disabilities are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers (National Science Foundation, 2015). The underrepresentation is a problem because the nation’s competitiveness depends on diverse individuals with STEM knowledge, skills, and abilities to drive innovation that will need to new products and economic growth (Business higher Education Forum/A Policy Brief, 2014; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016; National Science Board, 2016). The author discusses the importance of engaging students with disabilities in informal Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics activities.

Culture, Curriculum, Cognition: Contrastive Rhetorics Today, David Beach Apr 2017

Culture, Curriculum, Cognition: Contrastive Rhetorics Today, David Beach

Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)

Contrastive rhetoric is often seen as an obstacle in negotiating meaning. Past studies have focused on one of three discourse features: language, cognition, or discipline. This study examines the combination of discourse features creating a complex rhetoric to help students negotiate meaning. Attendees will gain a better understanding of contrastive rhetorics, why they clash, and how to manage, not necessarily modify, those clashes.

Curriculum Integration: An Overview, Amanda Wall, Alisa Leckie Apr 2017

Curriculum Integration: An Overview, Amanda Wall, Alisa Leckie

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Curriculum integration is a tenet of middle level education. This We Believe, the position paper of the Association for Middle Level Education, advocates for curriculum that is exploratory, relevant, integrative, and meaningful for young adolescents. Teachers can integrate curriculum across content areas by anchoring units of study in issues and themes that are determined along with students. Researchers have studied curriculum integration in different capacities, and further research can continue to explore the impact of this approach to curriculum.

Molecular And Optical Properties Of Tree-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter In Throughfall And Stemflow From Live Oaks And Eastern Red Cedar, Aron Stubbins, Leticia M. Silva, Thorsten Dittmar, John T. Van Stan Mar 2017

Molecular And Optical Properties Of Tree-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter In Throughfall And Stemflow From Live Oaks And Eastern Red Cedar, Aron Stubbins, Leticia M. Silva, Thorsten Dittmar, John T. Van Stan

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

Studies of dissolved organic matter (DOM) transport through terrestrial aquatic systems usually start at the stream. However, the interception of rainwater by vegetation marks the beginning of the terrestrial hydrological cycle making trees the headwaters of aquatic carbon cycling. Rainwater interacts with trees picking up tree-DOM, which is then exported from the tree in stemflow and throughfall. Stemflow denotes water flowing down the tree trunk, while throughfall is the water that drips through the leaves of the canopy. We report the concentrations, optical properties (light absorbance) and molecular signatures (ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry) of tree-DOM in throughfall and stemflow from …

Non-Student Minors On Campus Policy

Legal Affairs Policies

Georgia Southern University offers a variety of camps, clinics, programs, classes and activities which bring non-student minors onto campus. These activities occur on a year-round basis. These programs and activities are of great educational value and serve to benefit both the institution and the larger community. These programs and activities provide Georgia Southern with the opportunity to challenge, educate and mentor young people and to introduce them to the campus in a positive and meaningful way.

The safety and well-being of these visitors to our campus is of the highest concern. Georgia Southern (hereinafter “University”) is committed to best practices …

Using The Roc Curve To Measure Association And Evaluate Prediction Accuracy For A Binary Outcome, Jingjing Yin, Robert L. Vogel Mar 2017

Using The Roc Curve To Measure Association And Evaluate Prediction Accuracy For A Binary Outcome, Jingjing Yin, Robert L. Vogel

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

This review article addresses the ROC curve and its advantage over the odds ratio to measure the association between a continuous variable and a binary outcome. A simple parametric model under the normality assumption and the method of Box-Cox transformation for non-normal data are discussed. Applications of the binormal model and the Box-Cox transformation under both univariate and multivariate inference are illustrated by a comprehensive data analysis tutorial. Finally, a summary and recommendations are given as to the usage of the binormal ROC curve.

Raising The Bar: At-Risk Prevention For Urban Students In Middle School Science And Math Classrooms, Marilyn Lanier Dr. Mar 2017

Raising The Bar: At-Risk Prevention For Urban Students In Middle School Science And Math Classrooms, Marilyn Lanier Dr.

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

This presentation illustrates best practices for enhancing student success in Middle School science and math classrooms. The outcome will provide participants with a clear picture of what good teaching looks like when an empowering, experienced teacher implements pragmatic elements of third space theory and culturally responsive pedagogy to reduce the probability for at-risk behaviors in students from urban environments.

Student Voice: The Beacon In Our Journey To School Improvement, Yolanda Stanislaus, Helen J. Webster, Beth W. Hester Mar 2017

Student Voice: The Beacon In Our Journey To School Improvement, Yolanda Stanislaus, Helen J. Webster, Beth W. Hester

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

Is it possible to reduce the achievement gap simply by implementing effective instructional practices? Francis Scott Key Middle School in Montgomery County Maryland learned that building the cultural proficiency of teachers had to move beyond strategies. Francis Scott Key’s Student Voice Project helped both teachers and students transform their thinking about instruction, communication, and school improvement.
