It is known that over an Iwanaga–Gorenstein ring the Gorenstein injective (Gorenstein projective, Gorenstein flat) modules are simply the cycles of acyclic complexes of injective (projective, flat) modules. We consider the question: are these characterizations only working over Iwanaga–Gorenstein rings? We prove that if R is a commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension then the following are equivalent: 1. R is an Iwanaga–Gorenstein ring. 2. Every acyclic complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. 3. The cycles of every acyclic complex of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein injective. 4. Every acyclic complex of projective modules is totally acyclic. 5. …

Self-Regulated Learning As A Critical Attribute For Successful Teaching And Learning, Darren H. Iwamoto, Jace Hargis, Richard Bordner, Pomaika'inani Chandler
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The purpose of this scholarship of teaching and learning was to define and assess the level of self-regulation skills undergraduate students possess. Participants completed the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Through the analysis of the MSLQ, students reported having high expectations for themselves. Yet, students were found to not use cognitive learning skills and self-regulation practices consistently, which suggests a low level of self-regulation. Subsequently, students exhibit maladaptive and counterproductive behaviors like procrastination and disengagement. From this exploratory study a number of future studies were identified that have the potential for increasing the level of self-regulation in higher education.
Design And Performance Analysis Of Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine For Nano Grid Application, Md Mehedi Hasan
Design And Performance Analysis Of Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine For Nano Grid Application, Md Mehedi Hasan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Wind energy, being easily accessible, environmentally friendly, and being cost effective, has become one of the world’s popular growing renewable energy sources of electricity generation. To spread this technology to mankind it is necessary to develop turbines in this way that people can use it individually and comfortably. This kind of thinking accelerates the advancement of integration of wind turbine with Nano grid concept. Although significant progress has been achieved in the wind technology, there is still scope to reduce the cost and improve the performance of small-scale wind turbines. Moreover, low wind velocity should also need to be utilized …

The Role Of Student Major In Grade Perception In Chemistry Courses, Andrew Karatjas, Jeffrey Webb
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The Kruger-Dunning effect was studied as it related to performance in chemistry courses based on student differences in academic background. Student major was chosen as the classification to look at the effect of students with different interests/specializations. Chemistry majors tended to predict lower performance than biology majors, while unexpectedly many non-natural science majors predicted higher examination scores than those majoring in the physical sciences.
Technical Drafting And Mental Visualization In Interior Architecture Education, Ali Riza Arslan, Sibel Seda Dazkir
Technical Drafting And Mental Visualization In Interior Architecture Education, Ali Riza Arslan, Sibel Seda Dazkir
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
We explored how beginning-level interior architecture students develop skills to create mental visualizations of three-dimensional objects and environments, how they develop their technical drawing skills, and whether or not physical and computer generated models aid this design process. We used interviews and observations to collect data. The findings provide an insight on what kind of difficulties students experience during their learning process and how they overcome those difficulties. The results of the study indicate that the students’ lack of skills in technical drawing and in creating 2D and 3D mental visualizations negatively influenced their design process. Using the existing body …
On The Graceful Cartesian Product Of Alpha-Trees, Christian Barrientos, Sarah Minion
On The Graceful Cartesian Product Of Alpha-Trees, Christian Barrientos, Sarah Minion
Theory & Applications of Graphs
A graceful labeling of a graph G of size n is an injective assignment of integers from the set {0,1,…,n} to the vertices of G such that when each edge has assigned a weight, given by the absolute value of the difference of the labels of its end vertices, all the weights are distinct. A graceful labeling is called an α-labeling when the graph G is bipartite, with stable sets A and B, and the labels assigned to the vertices in A are smaller than the labels assigned to the vertices in B. In this …

Technology And Student Achievement In Stem Subjects: Perspectives From Teachers In Grades 3rd-5th, Kayleigh D. Hunter
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this study is to research teachers’ perspectives of their role and responsibilities of integrating technology in the classroom and the influence of technology on student achievement. The participants involved in the qualitative research process included seven in-service professional public school teachers. The thirty minute to an hour interviews were piloted using researcher created interview question constructed from previous research on teachers’ perceptions of technology. The questions used were created to specifically answer the researcher’s topic of study; some questions are regarding whether teachers believe success is technology driven and what benefits they think technology brings. The teachers …

How Preservice Teachers Make Meaning Of Mathematics Methods Texts, Shelly Sheats Harkness, Amy Brass
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Mathematics methods texts are important resources for supporting preservice teachers’ learning. Methods instructors routinely assign readings from texts. Yet, anecdotally and also based on reading compliance literature, many students report that they do not read assigned readings. Within this paper we briefly describe the findings from a survey of 132 mathematics methods instructors about their customary use of texts and focus more closely on interviews of 16 preservice and first-year teachers about the reading strategies they used while reading methods texts. Research questions addressed the following: What strategies do preservice teachers use to make meaning of mathematics methods texts? What …
An Updated Survey On Rainbow Connections Of Graphs - A Dynamic Survey, Xueliang Li, Yuefang Sun
An Updated Survey On Rainbow Connections Of Graphs - A Dynamic Survey, Xueliang Li, Yuefang Sun
Theory & Applications of Graphs
The concept of rainbow connection was introduced by Chartrand, Johns, McKeon and Zhang in 2008. Nowadays it has become a new and active subject in graph theory. There is a book on this topic by Li and Sun in 2012, and a survey paper by Li, Shi and Sun in 2013. More and more researchers are working in this field, and many new papers have been published in journals. In this survey we attempt to bring together most of the new results and papers that deal with this topic. We begin with an introduction, and then try to organize the …

It would help to put gates through the fences,
which…have come to be set up on most of our
universities between departments
(Lovejoy, 2009:16)
Using Midgley’s ideas of boundary setting it is suggested here that the university sector operates within a tightly bounded economic framework. This not only restricts the capacity of universities to work to their strengths, it also inhibits creativity and uniqueness, which disconnects them from their cultural identity. Rather, these circumstances create tepid universities all doing the same thing and producing similar results. Borrowing from global cities rhetoric, they become lukewarm, uninspired conglomerations all very similar and …

Students’ Perspectives On The First Day Of Class: A Replication, Katherine E. Eskine, Elizabeth Yost Hammer, Charles E. Gramlich, Jeremy Cohen, Lisa Schulte-Gipson
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Research has shown that first-day practices affect students’ motivation, grades, and end of the semester ratings of the professors. However, research on student preferences of first day practices has been conducted at public, predominantly white institutions and has not investigated if first day preferences differ at a private or historically Black university. Therefore, to investigate consistency in preferences across generations and possible differences in preferences at a private Historically Black College or University (HBCU) we assessed first day preferences and compared our results to the original study (Perlman & McCann, 1999). We sampled 230 predominantly Black students from a small …

Taking A Community Approach To Curriculum Change, Sarah E. Dalrymple, Anna Jo Auerbach, Elisabeth E. Schussler
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Many undergraduate institutions are reforming their courses to increase student engagement. A critical challenge in these efforts is to engage the academic community beyond the instructors in the process of change. At our university, we embraced this challenge by creating a volunteer community of faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates to design the discussion curricula for a new introductory biology sequence. We report on this process of curriculum development using a case study approach and describe how the community created the new curriculum and how they perceived the outcomes of the process. Our findings indicate that this curriculum design approach …

Investigating The Relationship Between Instructors’ Use Of Active Learning Strategies And Students’ Conceptual Understanding And Affective Changes In Introductory Biology: A Comparison Of Two Active-Learning Environments, Lacy M. Cleveland, Jeffrey T. Olimpo, Sue Dechenne-Peters
Biology: Faculty Publications
In response to calls for reform in undergraduate biology education, we conducted research examining how varying active-learning strategies impacted students’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in two sections of a large-lecture introductory cell and molecular biology course. Using a quasi-experimental design, we collected quantitative data to compare participants’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in the biological sciences across two contexts that employed different active-learning strategies and that were facilitated by unique instructors. Students participated in either graphic organizer/worksheet activities or clicker-based case studies. After controlling for demographic and presemester affective differences, we found that students in both active-learning environments displayed …

Synthesis And Biological Activity Of Novel Tu100 Derivatives, Oladotun J. Alao
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In an attempt to create more effective chemotherapeutic compounds, the naphthoquinone adduct, 12,13-dihydro-N-methyl-6,11,13-trioxo-5H-benzo[4,5]cyclohepta [1,2 b]naphthalen-5,12-imine (hereafter called TU100) was synthesized. Inspired by its unique and novel mechanism of action, a series of structural derivatives were synthesized to explore structure-activity relationships. The analogues exhibited different cytotoxicity profiles, revealing the indicated regions are involved in cell death induction. Furthermore, the analogues had dramatically different effects on cellular ATP production, suggesting different molecular targets. Synthesis, biological activity, and SAR study of these analogues will be revealed.
Edge Colorings Of K(M,N) With M+N-1 Colors Which Forbid Rainbow Cycles, Peter Johnson, Claire Zhang
Edge Colorings Of K(M,N) With M+N-1 Colors Which Forbid Rainbow Cycles, Peter Johnson, Claire Zhang
Theory & Applications of Graphs
For positive integers m, n, the greatest number of colors that can appear in an edge coloring of K(m,n) which avoids rainbow cycles is m + n - 1. Here these colorings are constructively characterized. It turns out that these colorings can be encoded by certain vertex labelings of full binary trees with m + n leafs.
An Eternal Domination Problem In Grids, William Klostermeyer, Margaret-Ellen Messinger, Alejandro Angeli Ayello
An Eternal Domination Problem In Grids, William Klostermeyer, Margaret-Ellen Messinger, Alejandro Angeli Ayello
Theory & Applications of Graphs
A dynamic domination problem in graphs is considered in which an infinite sequence of attacks occur at vertices with mobile guards; the guard at the attacked vertex is required to vacate the vertex by moving to a neighboring vertex with no guard. Other guards are allowed to move at the same time, and before and after each attack, the vertices containing guards must form a dominating set of the graph. The minimum number of guards that can defend the graph against such an arbitrary sequence of attacks is called the m-eviction number of the graph. In this paper, the m-eviction …
Two Short Proofs Of The Perfect Forest Theorem, Yair Caro, Josef Lauri, Christina Zarb
Two Short Proofs Of The Perfect Forest Theorem, Yair Caro, Josef Lauri, Christina Zarb
Theory & Applications of Graphs
A perfect forest is a spanning forest of a connected graph G, all of whose components are induced subgraphs of G and such that all vertices have odd degree in the forest. A perfect forest can be thought of as a generalization of a perfect matching since, in a matching, all components are trees on one edge. Scott first proved the Perfect Forest Theorem, namely, that every connected graph of even order has a perfect forest. Gutin then gave another proof using linear algebra.
We give here two very short proofs of the Perfect Forest Theorem which use only …

Application Of An Extremal Result Of Erdős And Gallai To The (N,K,T) Problem, Matt Noble, Peter Johnson, Dean Hoffman, Jessica Mcdonald
Theory & Applications of Graphs
An extremal result about vertex covers, attributed by Hajnal to Erdős and Gallai, is applied to prove the following: If n, k, and t are integers satisfying n ≥ k ≥ t ≥ 3 and k ≤ 2t - 2, and G is a graph with the minimum number of edges among graphs on n vertices with the property that every induced subgraph on k vertices contains a complete subgraph on t vertices, then every component of G is complete.

Gorenstein Injective Envelopes And Covers Over Two Sided Noetherian Rings, Alina Iacob
Gorenstein Injective Envelopes And Covers Over Two Sided Noetherian Rings, Alina Iacob
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
We prove that the class of Gorenstein injective modules is both enveloping and covering over a two sided noetherian ring such that the character modules of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein flat. In the second part of the paper we consider the connection between the Gorenstein injective modules and the strongly cotorsion modules. We prove that when the ring R is commutative noetherian of finite Krull dimension, the class of Gorenstein injective modules coincides with that of strongly cotorsion modules if and only if the ring R is in fact Gorenstein.
Principals' Perceptions Of Their Impact On School Reform In South Georgia, Lisa B. Linton
Principals' Perceptions Of Their Impact On School Reform In South Georgia, Lisa B. Linton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The nationwide focus on student achievement and school accountability has resulted in an effort at the federal and state levels to identify and turn around the nation’s lowest-performing schools. States and districts are desperately searching for solutions for failing schools. As a result, they are focusing on Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) models to generate changes in student achievement. Due to their ability to improve student achievement over time, these models are often chosen as a solution.
A review of the literature indicated that the involvement of the principals who are responsible for the implementation of the CSR model have not …
