Reflective Peer Review: A Metacognitive Approach, Krista Petrosino Apr 2017

Reflective Peer Review: A Metacognitive Approach, Krista Petrosino

Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)

Peer review is a valuable but often contested tool in the writing classroom because it is predicated on evaluation. This presentation will introduce participants to the concept of reflective peer review and its partner concept, reflective questioning, before moving into a brief, practical workshop in which participants develop reflective peer review strategies that work across disciplines for classroom or professional situations.

Linguistic And Sociological Dimensions Of The Illusive Concept Of Jamʿ, Mohamed Mohamed Mar 2017

Linguistic And Sociological Dimensions Of The Illusive Concept Of Jamʿ, Mohamed Mohamed

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

The Linguistic and Sociological Dimensions of the Illusive Concept of Jamʿ

Unlike ijmāʿ, which means consensus, jamʿ refers to mere collection, gathering or grouping. In other words, if ijmāʿ is grounded in reason, indicates a choice between two opposites, and represents a reified construction, jamʿ, on the contrary, avoids reason, (con) fuses opposites, and survives on ambiguity. Jamʿ neither dialectically integrates opposites, nor post-modernly juxtaposes them as collage. The secret of jamʿ is an epistemology of truth that is never complete, and always mixed with falsehood. This epistemology is rooted in Islamic theology, where the Truth is …

Teaching Sweet (Students Who Have Experienced Extreme Trauma), Mavis J. Averill Mar 2017

Teaching Sweet (Students Who Have Experienced Extreme Trauma), Mavis J. Averill

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

High school youth who live in the inner city, many of First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) descent, have traditionally had struggles within school systems. Many have had a great deal of personal trauma in their lives. This presentation subscribes to the idea that the trauma they have experienced has affected them in a way, which compromises learning and causes students to be continually distracted from their classroom lessons. The presentation will illustrate how to work with these youth using trauma-informed teaching practices to support their emotional, behavioural, mental and spiritual well being.
