Proteomic Profile Of Carbonylated Proteins Screen Regulation Of Apoptosis Via Camk Signaling In Response To Regular Aerobic Exercise, Wenfeng Liu, Li Li, Heyu Kuang, Yan Xia, Zhiyuan Wang, Shaopeng Liu, Dazhong Yin
Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications
To research carbonylated proteins and screen molecular targets in the rat striatum on regular aerobic exercise, male SpragueDawley rats (13 months old, n = 24) were randomly divided into middle-aged sedentary control (M-SED) and aerobic exercise (M-EX) groups (n = 12 each). Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) gradually increased from 50%–55% to 65%–70% for a total of 10 weeks. A total of 36 carbonylated proteins with modifed oxidative sites were identifed by Electrospray IonizationQuadrupole-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometer (ESI-Q-TOF-MS), including 17 carbonylated proteins unique to the M-SED group, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase type II subunit beta (CaMKII), and heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2/B1 (Hnrnpa2b1), …

Let’S Talk About Sex…And Older Adults, Amanda L. Catron
Let’S Talk About Sex…And Older Adults, Amanda L. Catron
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Aging in a youth-valuing society, presents many issues that potentially compromise the health and well-being of older adults. Although evidence has suggested substantial increases in the proportion of aging families in America, certain resources continue to be reserved for younger cohorts. Sex education has been incorporated into some curricula through public education systems, leaving older adults absent from exposure to this knowledge. Disproportionate access to sex education resources puts older adults at risk for health compromising factors. In 2016, there were 338 reported cases of STI’s/STD’s among 60-85+ year olds in Georgia. Evidence has shown that people are living longer …

Having Pride In Your Work: How To Serve Lgbt Older Adults Better, James Moorhead Jr.
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Common misconceptions about older adults include that all older adults are heterosexual. This is merely a myth. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults live in all states and territories of the United States and all parts of Georgia, from the rolling mountains in the north to the humid swamps of the south. Understanding the needs of this unique population is critical for gerontologists as the Baby Boomer generation ages, who tend to be more “out” and self-identify with pride. More importantly, LGBT older adults have been accessing needed services, often returning to the proverbial closet (Maddox, 2010). This …

The Impact Of Interacting With Older Adults With Dementia: Effecting Change In The Beliefs And Values Of The Senior Nursing Students, Pamela J. Worrell-Carlisle, Margaret Mossholder
The Impact Of Interacting With Older Adults With Dementia: Effecting Change In The Beliefs And Values Of The Senior Nursing Students, Pamela J. Worrell-Carlisle, Margaret Mossholder
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Forces are converging to create a perfect storm with regard to nursing care for the elderly, including those with Dementia. Forces include (a) an exponential growth of the population over 65, (b) a corresponding increase in persons who will be diagnosed with Dementia; (c) a shortage of Registered Nurses; (d) increasing numbers of unpaid, adult family caregivers who need caregiving relief; and (e) stigma toward the elderly that deters new graduates from choosing to work with them.
The authors will first describe a collaboration between a non-profit respite program for individuals with early to mid- stage dementia in southeast, rural …

Georgia's Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program: Literature Review, Pilot Study, Evaluation Proposal, And Recommendations For Future Research, Donald L. Ariail
Georgia Educational Researcher
Georgia's Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program (SCTWP) became law in 1976. This program allows senior citizens age 62 and older to attend University System of Georgia (USG) institutions tuition free. With the ultimate aim of improving the current program, the purpose of the proposed evaluation of the SCTWP is to determine the ongoing implementation of the program including the status of the promotion of the program, the assistance being provided to seniors aimed at facilitating entry into the program, and the level of satisfaction of program participants. Preliminary research indicates that information about the program may be difficult to obtain …

Targeting Ageism And Ableism: A Simulation On Loss And Decline, Jennifer Zorotovich, Nikki Digregorio
The D.I.F. Conference (Archived)
Young individuals commonly experience difficulties in understanding functional loss and sensory decline frequently accompanying normative aging processes (Bodner, 2009; Kusumastuti, vanFenema, Polman-van Stratum, Achterberg, Lindenberg, & Westendorp, 2017). Utilizing the framework of Wood (2003), this workshop will provide attendees with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience regarding common functional loss and sensory decline occurring across the lifespan as well as engage in caregiving tasks. This aging simulation will also be used to investigate ageism and ableism as it relates to the lived experiences of those living with loss and decline and in-depth account of contemporary models of aging as they …
