Reported Self-Care Practices And Perceptions Of Well-Being In Caregivers Of Children With Cancer, Rachel S. Siclare Jan 2017

Reported Self-Care Practices And Perceptions Of Well-Being In Caregivers Of Children With Cancer, Rachel S. Siclare

Honors College Theses

Thousands of American children are diagnosed with cancer annually. Cancer does not only affect these children, but also those that care for them. This study examined quality of life issues facing caregivers of children with cancer as a beginning effort in the investigation of this ongoing problem. Caregivers were surveyed at a pediatric hematology-oncology clinic. The surveys assessed caregiver burnout and level of self-care. Data was assessed using IBM SPSS software to determine signs of distress and decreased well-being in these participants. The results of this project will hopefully inspire other individuals to continue research in this field of study.

Tai Chi Can Improve Postural Stability As Measured By Resistance To Perturbation Related To Upper Limb Movement Among Healthy Older Adults, Jiahao Pan, Cuixian Liu, Shuqi Zhang, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the effects of Tai Chi (TC) training on postural control when upright standing was perturbed by upper limb movement.

Methods: Three groups, TC, Brisk walk (BW), and sedentary (SE), of thirty-six participants aged from 65 to 75 years were recruited from local community centers. Participants performed static balance task (quiet standing for 30 s with eyes open and closed) and fitting task (two different reaching distances X three different opening sizes to fit objects through). During tasks, the COP data was recorded while standing on the force plate. Criteria measures calculated …

A Proposal For Evaluating Georgia’S Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program, Donald Lamar Ariail

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Georgia’s Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program (SCTWP) became law in 1976. This program allows senior citizens age 62 and older to attend University System of Georgia (USG) institutions tuition free. With the ultimate aim of improving the current program, the purpose of the proposed evaluation of the SCTWP is to determine the ongoing implementation of the program including the status of the promotion of the program, the assistance being provided to seniors aimed at facilitating entry into the program, and the level of satisfaction of program participants. Preliminary research indicates that information about the program may be difficult to obtain …

Barriers To Music Therapy In The Care Of Those With Alzheimer's/Dementia, Karin E. Kvam Apr 2015

Barriers To Music Therapy In The Care Of Those With Alzheimer's/Dementia, Karin E. Kvam

Honors College Theses

This pilot study examines the barriers caregivers encounter when implementing music therapy in the care of those with Alzheimer’s/dementia. An 8-question survey was distributed at two long-term care facilities and an Alzheimer’s support group to understand how often and in what ways music therapy is utilized, as well as what barriers caregivers face when using the therapy. Results indicated that, although the majority of caregivers report using music therapy, it is not implemented as frequently as it could or should be. Caregivers report a knowledge deficit as the main reason for not implementing music therapy. The data suggests that an …

H-Index Is Important For Postural Control For People With Impaired Foot Sole Sensation, Shuqi Zhang, Brad Manor, Li Li Mar 2015

H-Index Is Important For Postural Control For People With Impaired Foot Sole Sensation, Shuqi Zhang, Brad Manor, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Introduction: People with Peripheral Neuropathy (PN), especially those with impaired sensory inputs through the small-afferent fiber (type II afferent fibers) reflex loop (SAF), might depend more on the large-afferent fiber (type I afferent fibers) reflex loop (LAF) for postural control.

Purpose: To examine whether the function of the LAF reflex loop, reflected by the H-reflex and ankle joint proprioception, influences postural control when the SAF reflex loop is impaired, as indicated by reduced foot sole cutaneous sensation.

Methods: Thirteen participants (8 women, 5 men) diagnosed with PN and 12 age-matched controls (7 women, 5 men) completed the testing protocol. Measures …

Change In Knowledge And Attitudes Among Students In An Undergraduate Developmental Psychology Class, Sara Sohr-Preston Jan 2015

Change In Knowledge And Attitudes Among Students In An Undergraduate Developmental Psychology Class, Sara Sohr-Preston

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Non-parent college students enrolled in a lifespan developmental psychology course were assessed at two time points (beginning of the semester and shortly after midterm) on knowledge and attitudes that would likely to be useful for the transition to parenthood. Students reported perceived change in knowledge and attitudes, and repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed statistically significant increases in knowledge of infant and child development, knowledge of reproduction and sexuality, rejections of vaccination myths, and appropriate expectations for children. Participants also reported significantly reduced belief in the use and value of corporal punishment, and parent-child role reversal.

Enhancing Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Through Micro-Level Collaboration Across Two Disciplines, Nancy M. Arrington, Adrienne L. Cohen Jan 2015

Enhancing Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Through Micro-Level Collaboration Across Two Disciplines, Nancy M. Arrington, Adrienne L. Cohen

Teaching & Learning: Faculty Publications

Two professors from two disciplines—education and sociology—analyzed the commonalities, differences, successes, and challenges of conducting cross-disciplinary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research at the course level (micro-level). This case study of their collaboration resulted in a series of lessons learned which add to the literature base on the process of SoTL collaboration. The results of their professional collaboration at this level provide a validation for increased communication and alignment during the development and implementation of the projects developed to enhance teaching and learning in their respective courses. This erudition illuminates the potential of increased SoTL collaborations across disciplines at …
