Executive Summary
Georgia Southern University is well-positioned to serve the local region and global community by engaging in public impact research. Public impact research matches community (broadly defined) needs with University resources to help solve the most pressing societal problems. Positioning Georgia Southern University as a public impact research institution aligns well with its recently established Strategic Plan (2019-2024), which calls for building research infrastructure to support interdisciplinary collaborations, better engage within our local, regional, and global communities, and build mutually beneficial partnerships. To move the University in this direction, the Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Chris Curtis, initiated the …

Aware I Am Alone: Intersections Of Solitude And Mindfulness, Richard Cleveland
Aware I Am Alone: Intersections Of Solitude And Mindfulness, Richard Cleveland
Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Publications
This paper explores the relationship between solitude and mindfulness. Parallels between the two constructs exist, allowing them to complement each other in furthering the well-being of individuals and communities. Three perspectives through which mindfulness may assist in forming foundational understandings of solitude are presented; these comprise Theoretical, Practice, and Research. The Theoretical lens provides introductory understandings of both solitude and mindfulness. On this basis, integral parallels between the two constructs are outlined. Next, Practice reviews solitude that is fostered through mindfulness practices. Further, additional models for recognizing solitude as a part of mindfulness are proposed. Finally, Research …

Your Local Area Agency On Aging: Rockin' The Ages, Peggy Jo Luukkonen
Your Local Area Agency On Aging: Rockin' The Ages, Peggy Jo Luukkonen
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Many people are not aware of the comprehensive programs and services offered through their local Area Agency on Aging (AAA). Participants will get an overview of who the AAA’s serve, what services are provided, and how innovative programs are being developed on an ongoing basis to help meet gaps in the community. AAA’s are no longer just about a noon meal for someone over the age of 60. Many local AAA’s now provide evidenced based wellness programs, hospital and nursing home transitions programs, caregiver assistance programs, dementia programs, and innovative assistive technology programs that launch rocket science technology from the …
Making Sense Of Caregiving, Timmarie Williams
Making Sense Of Caregiving, Timmarie Williams
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Did you know that if you are the main caregiver for a parent, spouse or child with a serious illness, disability or diagnosis, you are probably more stressed than you realize? And you are not alone. Many caregivers experience high levels of strain from their role. As a result, they face unique levels of burden, stress, anxiety, depression, and disruption of their own personal well-being and social activities. This talk explores the psychological ramifications of caregiving and offers some practical solutions for caregivers to reduce the strain.

"Shacking Up" And Settling Down: Cohabitation In Middle And Late Adulthood, Nadia Flanigan, Jennifer Zorotovich
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Rates of cohabitation have increased sharply among adults of all ages over the past few decades, particularly among adults ages 50 and older. Researchers have observed key differences between younger cohabiters and older cohabiters. Whereas younger cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting as a path towards marriage, older cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting after a previous marriage that may have ended in divorce. With increasing divorce rates among adults 50 and older, rates of cohabitation among this age group may continue to rise. Also compared to younger cohabiters, older cohabiters are more likely to view their relationship …

Improving Housing Quality To Reduce Asthma Rates And Healthcare Costs In Athens-Clarke County, Ga, Samantha J. Harris, John M. Johnston, Maria Bowie, Grace Bagwell Adams
Improving Housing Quality To Reduce Asthma Rates And Healthcare Costs In Athens-Clarke County, Ga, Samantha J. Harris, John M. Johnston, Maria Bowie, Grace Bagwell Adams
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that often develops from controllable environmental factors, such as poor air quality. Our study examined the relationship between mold in the home, which compromises indoor air quality, and asthma prevalence in Athens-Clarke County (ACC), Georgia.
Methods: Data from the Athens Wellbeing Project’s 2016 survey of 1,354 households in ACC was employed to examine indoor air quality and asthma prevalence in ACC. We provided descriptive statistics to examine asthma prevalence and asthma predictors, including the proportion of respondents reporting mold and pest problems, smoking prevalence, and the proportion of households reporting clinical obesity. We …

Living Arrangement: A Contributor To Vascular Disease In Asymptomatic African American Women, Meldra Hall, Elizabeth Ofili, Rigobert Lapu-Bula, Ernest Alema-Mensah, Stephanie Miles-Richardson
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Diminished social support has shown to lead to worse cardiovascular outcomes and since cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States (U.S.), it is critical to non-invasively study its precursor- vascular disease (VD). Assessing the impact social support has on vascular outcomes can unveil potential CVD susceptibilities in at-risk populations. African American women exhibit the greatest burden of CVD morbidity and mortality; therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the association between living arrangement/social support and impaired vascular function in asymptomatic African American women.
Methods: Vascular function was assessed by a non-invasive …
The Relationship Between Per Capita Income, Uninsured Rates, And Cardiovascular Mortality In Georgia Between 1994 – 2016, Monique Bethel, Mark A. Thompson, Adam E. Berman
The Relationship Between Per Capita Income, Uninsured Rates, And Cardiovascular Mortality In Georgia Between 1994 – 2016, Monique Bethel, Mark A. Thompson, Adam E. Berman
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: The association between cardiovascular mortality, per capita income and uninsured rates in Georgia have not been well described.
Methods: Cardiovascular mortality rates, per capita income and uninsured rates were obtained for the years 1994-2016, and their relationships were analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistical techniques.
Results: In bivariate analysis, a strong inverse relationship between cardiovascular mortality and per capita income (r = -0.917, p < 0.0001) was detected, while bivariate analysis detected no relationship between cardiovascular mortality and uninsured rates. Both per capita income and uninsured rates were negative predictors of cardiovascular mortality in multivariate analysis.
Conclusions: Per capita income increases in Georgia were strongly correlated with reductions in cardiovascular mortality. While there was not a linear correlation of healthcare coverage status and cardiovascular mortality, it demonstrated a protective effect in …

The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd
The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd
Honors College Theses
Background: Perhaps the most prevalent cause of anxiety among the elderly is the fear of falling (FOF), considering that a fall can lead to serious complications and the decline of health. Kumar et al. found that subjects with a FOF usually have less social support. Therefore, increased social support could possibly decrease the FOF, thus decreasing the likelihood of a fall overall. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the amount of perceived social support one receives and the FOF among people ages 60 and up. Methods: In order to measure FOF and social support among …
