Teachers’ Conceptions Of Teaching Service Statistics Courses, Sue Gordon, Peter Petocz, Anna Reid Jan 2007

Teachers’ Conceptions Of Teaching Service Statistics Courses, Sue Gordon, Peter Petocz, Anna Reid

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this paper, we report on the results of a series of e-mail interviews with statistics educators around the world, focusing on their views of the nature of teaching statistics as a ‘service’ subject. What do they think are the important aspects of statistics to focus on in such servicing teaching? What do they think are the characteristics of good teachers? And how do they go about developing themselves as statistics teachers? We analyse their responses to these and other questions using a phenomenographic approach to identify an outcome space for their conceptions of teaching service statistics. We examine the …

Effects Of Information Distributions Strategies On Student Performance And Satisfaction In A Web-Based Course Management System, Margaret C. Lohman Jan 2007

Effects Of Information Distributions Strategies On Student Performance And Satisfaction In A Web-Based Course Management System, Margaret C. Lohman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The effects of three information distribution strategies in a course management system (CMS) on student performance and satisfaction were investigated. Analysis of the data found that the distribution of instructional materials in class resulted in significantly higher student performance on an end-of-the-semester technical knowledge test than when instructional materials were available to students via a CMS either at the beginning of the semester or one week before each of the class sessions in which the materials were to be covered. However, no significant differences were found among the three information distribution strategies on total points earned in the course or …

Factors That Influence Faculty Actions: A Study On Faculty Responses To Academic Dishonesty, Terry Coalter, Chi Lo Lim, Tekle Wanorie

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Persistent academic dishonesty has perplexed researchers who focus their studies on why students cheat. There are limited studies regarding the faculty perspective of this issue. This study explores factors that influence faculty action when faced with dishonesty or evidence of dishonesty. A questionnaire consisting of thirty-five items was sent to all 242 faculty members of a mid-size state university in the United States . The results of the study indicated that a majority of the respondents agree that dishonesty is a major problem, and they agreed that it is critical to take proactive measures to deter dishonesty; however, the respondents …

Developing A Shared Meaning Of Scholarship To Enable The Revision Of Promotion Policy, Cheryl Albers Jan 2007

Developing A Shared Meaning Of Scholarship To Enable The Revision Of Promotion Policy, Cheryl Albers

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Groups communicate about scholarship on the tacit assumption that there is a mutual understanding of the term. Yet the process of policy development is often hampered as different meanings attached to the term become evident. This paper uses culturalinterpretive and interactionist conceptual frameworks to analyze a specific case of redefining the shared meaning of scholarship and codifying these meanings in promotion and tenure policy. Data was collected through interviews, observation and document analysis. The six significant groups involved in this policy revision invested the term scholarship with different meanings, including viewing it as problematic, as a creative process, as currency …

Countering Sotl Marginalization: A Model For Integrating Sotl With Institutional Initiatives, Connie Schroeder Jan 2007

Countering Sotl Marginalization: A Model For Integrating Sotl With Institutional Initiatives, Connie Schroeder

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Despite SoTL’s development as a movement, most SoTL work remains institutionally marginalized at the level of classroom inquiry. Institutional planners do not come looking for SoTL to guide their efforts to improve the institution, even when institutional initiatives are squarely centered on teaching and learning. The chasm between SoTL and the institutional radar screen is wide and rarely traveled. Countering the marginalization from the institution that has plagued SoTL up to this point in its evolution requires a process that identifies a common intersection. Research-based frameworks about student learning, such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), can serve …
