The Consideration Of Fraud In A Financial Statement Audit: Some Study Questions, Eddie Metrejean, Lou X. Orchard, L. Dwight Sneathen Jr. Jan 2007

The Consideration Of Fraud In A Financial Statement Audit: Some Study Questions, Eddie Metrejean, Lou X. Orchard, L. Dwight Sneathen Jr.

Accountancy: Faculty Publications

In October 2002, the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) issued Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 99, Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit in response to recommendations from the Fraud Task Force. SAS No. 99 is intended to improve auditor performance during audits and to increase the likelihood that the auditors will detect fraudulent financial reporting if any is present. Since fraud awareness is such a major part of any audit, accounting students should be well versed on the content of SAS No. 99. However, not all accounting students read SASs in detail. Then how do accounting educators get …

Why Should I Care About Sotl? The Professional Responsibilities Of Post-Secondary Educators, Philip Pecorino, Shannon Kincaid Jan 2007

Why Should I Care About Sotl? The Professional Responsibilities Of Post-Secondary Educators, Philip Pecorino, Shannon Kincaid

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Over the last decade, there has been tremendous growth in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) in post-secondary education. Yet, apart from a few significant exceptions, there has been very little discussion of the role this scholarship is to play in the professional activities of post-secondary educators. This essay defends the claim that as professional educators, all college professors have an ethical obligation to participate in SOTL. This participation entails both active research and scholarly review. On these grounds, SOTL is not an isolated slice of scholarly research; it is a necessary condition of post-secondary education.

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin Jan 2007

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The concept of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) was developed over 15 years ago. Because scholarly recognition comes from the discipline, the researchers determined to find out how a range of disciplines deal with the SoTL. In that time, how has the SoTL been integrated into and used by the various academic disciplines? What publication outlets are available to professors within each of the disciplines to present and publish on the SoTL? This survey review of current associations, conferences, and journals examines the SoTL in 20 different disciplines as demonstrated by scholarly production within these disciplines. Adoption levels …

African-American Male Senior Administrators In Predominantly White Institutions: A Study On Resilience, Georj Lemont Lewis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The African-American male faces several challenges while working towards the attainment of success in many aspects of todays society. Regardless of social status, the Black males experiences in the legal system, educational environment, and in the work place can be described as stressful due to the presence or stereotypes, prejudice, and racism. This study explores the African American males experience as a senior administrator at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) from the perspectives of four Participants. This study is being conducted to identify what factors impact the resilience of African American male senior administrators at PWIs. In order to capture the …

Bounds And Comparisons For Weighted Renewal-Type Integral Equations, Broderick O. Oluyede Jan 2007

Bounds And Comparisons For Weighted Renewal-Type Integral Equations, Broderick O. Oluyede

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this note, inequalities and bounds for weighted renewal-type integral equations are presented. Some upper and lower bounds for the weighted renewal-type integral equations with monotone weight functions are derived. Some upper and lower bounds for the weighted renewal-type equations with monotone weight functions are derived. Bounds for the difference between two weighted renewal functions as well between the parent and weighted renewal functions are obtained in terms of the parent renewal reliability functions and their first and second moments. Relations for renewal-type integrals of the ruin probability are presented. Some inequalities, bounds and convergence results are also established.

Use Of Capacity Building Strategies In Non-Profit Speech And Hearing Centers: A National Study, Elizabeth Fogarty Larrimore

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this researchers study was to analyze the use of capacity building strategies in non-profit speech and hearing centers by examining the chief executive officers' (CEOs') perceptions of both actual and desired use of capacity building strategies in their organizations. A survey was sent to the 39 CEOs of non-profit speech and hearing centers who are member agencies of the National Association of Speech and Hearing Centers (NASHC). NASHC is a consortium of free standing, non-profit speech and hearing centers from around the United States. The survey consisted of a five point rating scale (1 = rarely done, …

Dialogic Communication In Collaborative Problem Solving Groups, Robert B. Innes Jan 2007

Dialogic Communication In Collaborative Problem Solving Groups, Robert B. Innes

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Discourse, especially dialogic communication between students in collaborative problem-solving groups, plays a central role in educational reforms informed by learning science. This study examined the quality of discourse in problem-based learning groups in a university course. The study found a low incidence of high quality dialogue (dialogic communication, elaboration and co-construction of ideas, productive disciplinary discourse) in 12 one-hour planning meetings. The most competent students took leadership in groups and made the majority of the conceptual contributions. Although there was a reasonable amount of time spent connecting theories to cases, there was little time spent in high-level analysis and very …

Allowing Not-Knowing In A Dialogic Discussion, José Alfonso Feito Jan 2007

Allowing Not-Knowing In A Dialogic Discussion, José Alfonso Feito

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Inspired by Bakhtin’s and Vygotsky’s theories of learning, this project explores how “allowing not-knowing” is enacted within collaborative student-led seminar discussions. Earlier research on student reflections (Feito, 2002) suggested that in successful seminars, participants regularly acknowledge their lack of understanding, offer partial understandings, and collectively develop new meanings. This project tracks these phenomena within actual classroom discourse. A detailed discourse analysis of a small “Great Books” seminar session (N=16) describes how students construct a learning environment conducive to not-knowing and the open-ended construction of meaning. The students used discourse markers and sequencing to invite the recursive manipulation of ideas by …

The Significance Of Knowledge In Learning: A Psychologically Informed Analysis Of Higher Education Students' Perceptions, Effie Maclellan, Rebecca Soden Jan 2007

The Significance Of Knowledge In Learning: A Psychologically Informed Analysis Of Higher Education Students' Perceptions, Effie Maclellan, Rebecca Soden

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The emergence of what is increasingly becoming known as the knowledge age implies that higher education should prepare students to be, primarily, knowledge workers. This proposition triggered a small scale study in which structured interviews were carried out with 25 second-year undergraduates registered for a psychology module on motivational theory. The purpose of the interview was to discern students’ views on the features of dialogue/talk and of student study behaviour that help them to develop usable knowledge. The dominant finding was that students did not perceive their learning to be facilitated through being required to be cognitively active in processing …

“What Happens In My University Classes That Helps Me To Learn?” Teacher Education Students’ Instructional Metacognitive Knowledge, Helen Askell-Williams, Michael Lawson, Rosalind Murray-Harvey Jan 2007

“What Happens In My University Classes That Helps Me To Learn?” Teacher Education Students’ Instructional Metacognitive Knowledge, Helen Askell-Williams, Michael Lawson, Rosalind Murray-Harvey

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Teacher education students’ instructional metacognitive knowledge needs to be well developed to promote both their own learning and their prospective students’ learning. In this study, we asked teacher education students to provide answers to the question “What happens in my university classes that helps me to learn?” Students identified issues such as supportive classroom environments, teachers’ professional and personal qualities, practical activities, reflection, and discussions. Cognitive organisation strategies were not well represented. Cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling of students’ responses identified a perceptual separation between teachers’ and students’ roles, suggesting that participants’ sense of personal agency, shared responsibility for learning, …

Powerpoint Presentation Handouts And College Student Learning Outcomes, Illene C. Noppe Ph.D. Jan 2007

Powerpoint Presentation Handouts And College Student Learning Outcomes, Illene C. Noppe Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This investigation sought to determine if supplementing lectures using Microsoft PowerPoint slides with handouts of the slides enhanced test-taking performance in an undergraduate Human Development course. In the first study, one section of the course (N=50) was given handouts for one exam and a final; the other (N=50) received handouts only for the final. No significant differences in test performance occurred across sections. The second study, conducted the following semester for two sections of the same course, assessed whether the receipt of PowerPoint handouts was moderated by learning styles. Learning styles were not predictive of improved test performance as a …
