Superhero As Metaphor: Using Creative Pedagogies To Engage, Christie H. Burton Jul 2008

Superhero As Metaphor: Using Creative Pedagogies To Engage, Christie H. Burton

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Video case studies of realistic scenarios have long been used to illustrate course concepts and provide variety in the classroom. The growing popularity of superheroes in film suggests an openness to experience beyond the traditional fare. This qualitative study uses content analysis to explore how students’ understanding of ethics concepts changed over time after viewing a superhero film and writing with metaphor. A pre-test post-test design was used, where students in an undergraduate management course completed a writing assignment before and after experiencing the film. Results suggest that after students were exposed to the treatment, they had a deeper understanding …

Using Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning (Sotl) To Inquire Into Pre-Service Teachers’ Science Lesson Planning Considerations, Geeta Verma Jul 2008

Using Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning (Sotl) To Inquire Into Pre-Service Teachers’ Science Lesson Planning Considerations, Geeta Verma

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper shares my experiences with the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) framework in my university science methods course. Incorporating SoTL not only enabled me to inquire into my own teaching as a scholarly activity but also engaged my students in critical reflections. I used the principles and characteristics of SoTL to design this inquiry by; a) creating a new instructional framework for lesson planning; b) facilitating students’ reflections on their experiences with the new framework; and c) documenting and presenting this inquiry as a scholarly activity. Forty-eight pre service teachers (N = 48), 43 women and 5 men …

The Gothic Genre Beyond Borders: Mathew Lewis’S Influence On José De Espronceda’S El Estudiante De Salamanca, Francisco Fernández Jun 2008

The Gothic Genre Beyond Borders: Mathew Lewis’S Influence On José De Espronceda’S El Estudiante De Salamanca, Francisco Fernández

The Coastal Review

Once the Gothic crossed the Spanish border, a number of writers were influenced by this genre. This is the case of José de Espronceda in his El estudiante de Salamanca (1840). Influenced by Matthew Lewis’sThe Monk, Espronceda not only uses Gothic conventions when he creates a protagonist haunted by a ghost but also subverts them by reversing the villain-victim relationship for the sake of poetic justice. As a result, the development of the plot is more strongly justified, for the hero’s sins are, after all, what lead him to his tragic end.

Creating Aotearoa Through Discourse: Language And Character In Keri Hulme's The Bone People, Sabryna Nicole Sarver May 2008

Creating Aotearoa Through Discourse: Language And Character In Keri Hulme's The Bone People, Sabryna Nicole Sarver

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

I will be looking at Keri Hulmes novel The Bone People as a postcolonial text. The beginning will explore the current conversations taking place about the importance of language(s) within texts that are deemed postcolonial as they relate to Hulmes novel which is written in both Maori and English. Other important postcolonial ideas applicable to the text such as space, magical realism, and current postcolonial theory will be looked at. Previous criticism will also be examined. The final sections of this thesis will focus on Hulmes three main characters separately: Joe, Kerewin, and Simon, and their places within and outside …

Toward An Anarchist Theory Of Self: Wilderness, Actualization And Authority, Joseph Amos Garcia May 2008

Toward An Anarchist Theory Of Self: Wilderness, Actualization And Authority, Joseph Amos Garcia

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research investigated essential components of optimal human functioning. An anarchist model was used to emphasize the autonomous nature of an optimally functioning self. Utilizing Abraham Maslows hierarchy of needs model, Leonard Martins ID compensation theory, fundamental principles of anarchist theory and environmental feedback paradigms it has been shown that time spent during backpacking experiences in the wilderness may simulate immediate return social systems, allow for recognition of need fulfillment and ultimately increase self-actualization. In addition it was shown that materialism, via an ownership index, is negatively correlated with actualization. Utilizing a backward regression analysis the resulting model supports the …

Evidence Of Empathy In Animals Across Time, Jeffrey Stephen Gavel May 2008

Evidence Of Empathy In Animals Across Time, Jeffrey Stephen Gavel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Empathetic behaviors are characterized by a three-tiered hierarchical organization involving arousal, emotional contagion, and cognitive empathy. In the current study, we define each step in this hierarchy in order to build toward a paradigm that represents true cognitive empathy. We then examine the levels of empathy displayed by rats in previous paradigms and classify prior studies by level of arousal, emotional contagion, or cognitive empathy. Finally, we present two studies which examine the potential for empathetic display in rats.

History, Historical Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management: A Case Study From Jasper County, South Carolina, Angus Caldwell Sawyer May 2008

History, Historical Archaeology, And Cultural Resource Management: A Case Study From Jasper County, South Carolina, Angus Caldwell Sawyer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Virgil Noble (1996) has noted a deficiency in historical archaeological research within the sphere of cultural resource management, attributable to inadequacies within regulatory agencies, resulting in trite methodological exercises. This thesis demonstrates that another problem can be found in the basic methodology of historical archaeology as translated into practice in compliance archaeology. A review of a data recovery project in Jasper County, South Carolina shows that the necessary relationship between the documentary and archaeological particulars, that are not well codified in the standards for archaeological investigations, led to the creation of a program of study that would likely lead to …

Sexuality: Social And Cultural Constructs Of Women Represented Through Art, Gayle Shaw Clark May 2008

Sexuality: Social And Cultural Constructs Of Women Represented Through Art, Gayle Shaw Clark

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Life is one beauty pageant after another. There is always competition, be it physically or mentally. Societal rules have always determined the constructions of gender both accepted and taboo. My research explores how these social constructs pertaining to sexuality began and how they have been perpetuated throughout history in art. Because of my personal struggles with social constrictions as a woman, an artist, and as one whose sexual identity has been designed from these social constructs, I have explored women's roles as artists: how women and their sexuality have been portrayed in the past through artworks using various media; how …

Resurrecting The Anonymous: An Introduction To Mary Steele, The Author Of Danebury And The Power Of Friendship, A Tale With Two Odes By A Young Lady, Amanda J. Holmes May 2008

Resurrecting The Anonymous: An Introduction To Mary Steele, The Author Of Danebury And The Power Of Friendship, A Tale With Two Odes By A Young Lady, Amanda J. Holmes

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Published anonymously in 1779 Danebury, or the Power of Friendship, a Tale with Two Odes, has retained its anonymity for over two centuries. Evidence found in the Reeves and Steele Collections housed at Angus Library; Regents Park College, Oxford identifies the author as Mary Steele, a provincial young woman with a Nonconformist background who was an active participant in a literary coterie that included other published authors such as Mary Scott, Anne Steele, and Hannah More. Drawing upon the work of Marjorie Reeves as well as the original manuscripts contained in the Reeves and Steele collections, this thesis provides the …

Full-Cycle Assessment Of Critical Thinking In An Ethics And Science Course, Jennifer Blue, Beverley Taylor, Jan Yarrison-Rice Jan 2008

Full-Cycle Assessment Of Critical Thinking In An Ethics And Science Course, Jennifer Blue, Beverley Taylor, Jan Yarrison-Rice

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Enhancing critical thinking skills for undergraduate students is important across the curriculum and between disciplines. We report on a method of improving critical thinking skills, which was studied through an Ethics and Science First-Year Seminar course. We used full cycle assessment over a three-year period to assess students’ development and to modify the course teaching and assignments with the goal of increasing student development of critical thinking skills. Data were obtained from student writing throughout the semester during each offering. Modest, but significant, overall gains of ~0.7 on a 4 point scale are reported between early and midterm assignments in …

Optimal Science Lab Design: Impacts Of Various Components Of Lab Design On Students’ Attitudes Toward Lab, John Basey, Loren Sackett, Natalie Robinson Jan 2008

Optimal Science Lab Design: Impacts Of Various Components Of Lab Design On Students’ Attitudes Toward Lab, John Basey, Loren Sackett, Natalie Robinson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Variations in science lab design can differentially impact student learning. Quantification of these differential impacts can be used in modeling – an approach we term “optimal lab design.” In this study we estimated relative influences of six characteristics of lab design on students’ attitudes toward science labs in three different first-year college biology lab courses (USA). We used two end-of-semester surveys. The first had students choose their favorite and least favorite lab and answer questions associated with the six characteristics and their choices. The second had students provide an overall rating of each lab and a rating based on their …

Waterhole Dynamics And Chemical Signals Of African Elephants ( Loxodonta Africana ), Stacie Marie Castelda Jan 2008

Waterhole Dynamics And Chemical Signals Of African Elephants ( Loxodonta Africana ), Stacie Marie Castelda

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The distribution of mammals in a savanna environment is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. The African savanna experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. Species become spatially restricted around water resources during the dry season, resulting in increased intraspecies and interspecies resource-based aggregation. A dominate species, such as the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), may influence this aggregation. I examined the influence of wet and dry seasons and ambient temperature on the use of a waterhole by elephants as well as the co-occurrence of elephants and other mammals at the waterhole. Biodiversity scans (October 2004-June 2007) and were performed at a …

Aquaporin 3 Water Channel Protein Gene Expression In Squalis Acanthias Dogfish Shark, Debra Lee Murray Jan 2008

Aquaporin 3 Water Channel Protein Gene Expression In Squalis Acanthias Dogfish Shark, Debra Lee Murray

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Aquaporins are a family of membrane proteins that provide channels for the rapid movement of water molecules and some small solutes across the cellular membrane. Since the discovery of the first water channel protein, hundreds of homologous proteins have been found in all forms of life and much has been learned about their complex role in body water homeostasis. This is the first study to use molecular and immunological techniques to demonstrate that an orthologue of mammalian AQP3 is present in the epithelial cells of Squalus acanthias dogfish shark kidney, gills, rectal gland, esophagus, stomach, eye and brain. The full-length …

Inducible Chemical Defenses In Temperate Reef Sponges Of The South Atlantic Bight, U.S.A., Leslie Vanesa Sarmiento Jan 2008

Inducible Chemical Defenses In Temperate Reef Sponges Of The South Atlantic Bight, U.S.A., Leslie Vanesa Sarmiento

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sessile organisms employing inducible defenses may receive protection from consumers while simultaneously minimizing the metabolic costs of maintaining these defenses. To investigate if reef sponges in the South Atlantic Bight employ inducible chemical defenses, I tested two predictions with Ircinia campana, I. felix, and Aplysina fulva. First, concentrations of antipredator compounds should covary with the abundance of sponge predators. Second, higher compound concentrations should be more effective at deterring predators. Secondary metabolite concentrations in two (I. campana and I. felix) of the sponge species showed temporal variation, which is consistent with the inducible defense hypothesis. Interestingly, higher concentrations of these …
