Comparison Of Invasive And Non-Invasive Techniques For Measuring Fiddler Crab Density In A Salt Marsh, Charles Robert Hubbard
Comparison Of Invasive And Non-Invasive Techniques For Measuring Fiddler Crab Density In A Salt Marsh, Charles Robert Hubbard
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Quantifying the density of burrowing crabs is challenging, and several techniques have been developed to accomplish it, including burrow counting, visual surveys of surface-active crabs, and substrate excavation. These techniques have been compared in mangrove forests but not in a salt marsh, nor has anyone attempted to excavate traps repeatedly for multiple days. Previous comparisons have not examined these techniques over the course of several months, nor considered the cost and precision associated with each technique. Therefore, from May of 2007 to April 2008, I conducted burrow, visual, single excavation, and repeated excavation surveys to estimate Uca pugnax density in …
Advent Of Denial Of Death In Children's Literature, Marvin Tyler Sasser
Advent Of Denial Of Death In Children's Literature, Marvin Tyler Sasser
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
After creating and sustaining highly Romanticized notions of childhood, society begins to protect children from the dangers that supposedly exist exclusively in adult reality, particularly death. Taking into consideration society's attitude towards childhood, this thesis closely examines the different ways in which authors deny death in children's literature. Nineteenth-century authors often use enchantment to create ways for children to survive in an otherwise cruel and deadly Victorian world. As social issues slowly begin to improve, death in children's literature moves away from an event that without magic cannot be ignored, to an occurrence far less likely to happen during childhood. …

Dynamical Pattern Formation During Growth Of A Dual-Species Bose-Einstein Condensate, Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn, Laura Elisa Halmo, Mark Edwards
Dynamical Pattern Formation During Growth Of A Dual-Species Bose-Einstein Condensate, Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn, Laura Elisa Halmo, Mark Edwards
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We simulate the growth of a dual species Bose-Einstein condensate using a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an additional gain term giving rise to the growth. Such growth occurs during simultaneous evaporative cooling of a mixture of two gases. The ground state of a dual condensate is normally either a miscible mixture, or an immiscible phase with two spatially separated components. In a cigar trap the ground state typically consists of one component in the center, and the other component flanking it. Our simulations show that when the condensates are formed in a cigar trap and the mixture is phase separated, then …

A Game Approach To Teach Environmentally Benign Manufacturing In The Supply Chain, Donna M. Qualters, Jacqueline A. Isaacs, Thomas P. Cullinane, Jay Laird, Ann Mcdonald
A Game Approach To Teach Environmentally Benign Manufacturing In The Supply Chain, Donna M. Qualters, Jacqueline A. Isaacs, Thomas P. Cullinane, Jay Laird, Ann Mcdonald
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Multidisciplinary models of education are needed to prepare students for their role in a global work environment. Combined with this need is the reality of the new Millennial Generation entering the educational system with a different approach to learning. This paper introduces an interactive, educational engineering game designed to appeal to the Millennial Generation’s learning preferences. Shortfall is a prototype board game with a team approach and a trial and error methodology to introduce students to environmentally benign manufacturing in the supply chain using the automobile industry as a model. After playing the game, quantitative analysis showed that on average, …
Effect Of Matriarchs On Group Interactions, Kinship Fitness, And Differences In Chemosensory Behavior Of African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Rhea Marie Esposito
Effect Of Matriarchs On Group Interactions, Kinship Fitness, And Differences In Chemosensory Behavior Of African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Rhea Marie Esposito
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Female African elephants exhibit multiple levels of social organization with the family as the functional social unit. Families consist of related females and the oldest female is the matriarch. Related family groups that frequently fuse are termed kinship groups, led by the grand matriarch. I examined matriarch communication behavior across social context and their role in interactions between families at waterholes in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. I analyzed three hypotheses for matriarchal effects on group fitness: a) older matriarchs provide greater access to resources, b) older matriarchs lead more social groups, or c) there is no behavior-fitness relationship …
Using Scholarly Research In Course Redesign: Teaching To Engage Students With Authentic Disciplinary Practices, Rachel G. Ragland
Using Scholarly Research In Course Redesign: Teaching To Engage Students With Authentic Disciplinary Practices, Rachel G. Ragland
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This action research study describes a course redesign using scholarly research in two ways. Traditional disciplinary research was used to inform the design of the curriculum, and SoTL was used to measure the success of the course design in achieving its objectives for student learning. The objective of the course redesign was to better engage students in applying the authentic disciplinary practices of the field. Research was then conducted on the pedagogical process to determine the success of the new course design in achieving its objectives. The research project documented: how the authentic disciplinary practices were taught to students; student …
