Host And Seasonal Effects On The Infection Dynamics Of Skrjabinoptera Phrynosoma (Ortlepp) Schulz, 1927, A Parasitic Nematode Of Horned Lizards, Kathryn Claire Hilsinger

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's Abstract: Skrjabinoptera phrynosoma (Ortlepp) Schulz, 1927 is a common parasitic nematode of horned lizards. The life cycle of S. phrynosoma was described by Lee in 1957, but has received little attention since. The present study addressed effect of season as well as host characteristics on the infection dynamics in lizard hosts. In the Alvord Basin in southeastern Oregon, S. phrynosoma were collected from Phrynosoma platyrhinos Gerard 1852 horned lizards via stomach flushes, cloaca flushes and fecal pellet collections. Parasite load variables (number of nematodes per host, length of those nematodes, and total worm burden (ΣL)) were analyzed within three …

Y'All Think We're Stupid: Deconstructing Media Stereotypes Of The American South, Karen C. Hamilton Jan 2009

Y'All Think We're Stupid: Deconstructing Media Stereotypes Of The American South, Karen C. Hamilton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the various stereotypes that persist about the American South, giving consideration to the common stereotypes, their persistence, and the response of Southerners and non-Southerners to them. Further, it aims to examine in-depth the methods by which these stereotypes are perpetuated, such as literature, movies, television, and music. Within this dissertation, pieces of literature by traditional Southern authors, like William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, are examined for the images they employ. Further, films such as Deliverance and Sweet Home Alabama, as well as television shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and The Beverly Hillbillies are analyzed for how …

Service Learning In A Non-Majors Biology Course Promotes Changes In Students’ Attitudes And Values About The Environment, Alissa Packer Jan 2009

Service Learning In A Non-Majors Biology Course Promotes Changes In Students’ Attitudes And Values About The Environment, Alissa Packer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

I was interested in whether the inclusion of a service-learning experience would affect students’ attitudes and values about the environment. To investigate this question, I incorporated a service-learning project into the laboratory portion of one of the two sections of my non-majors biology course, and kept the lecture portions of the course identical. Several methods were used to assess the impact of the service-learning experience: the New Ecological Paradigm survey was used to measure changes in students’ attitudes and values about the environment at the beginning and end of the semester, and reflective writing assignments were used throughout the semester …

Effects Of Habitat Quality On Reproduction In Two Georgia Populations Of Gopherus Polyphemus, Jaqueline W. Entz Jan 2009

Effects Of Habitat Quality On Reproduction In Two Georgia Populations Of Gopherus Polyphemus, Jaqueline W. Entz

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in maternal investment by examining variation in the habitat structure and reproductive parameters for two populations of Gopherus polyphemus in Southeast GA. Both habitat structure and reproductive parameters for these populations are known from a previous study, thus this study expands upon the previous one and addresses four main questions. (1) Has habitat quality changed in the past ten years within and between population sites? (2) Could a change of habitat have affected female morphology or female reproductive parameters within or between populations? (3) Is female body size shaping …

Flea And Louse Infestations Of Cotton Rats (Sigmodon Hispidus) In The Southeastern United States, Alena E. Aviles Jan 2009

Flea And Louse Infestations Of Cotton Rats (Sigmodon Hispidus) In The Southeastern United States, Alena E. Aviles

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Ectoparasites were collected from cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) in 20 sites in the Southeastern United States (FL, GA, MS, NC and SC). Prevalence and mean intensity of parasitism by sucking lice (Anoplura) and fleas (Siphonaptera) of cotton rats were recorded at all sites. The geographical distribution of S. hispidus and its main louse and flea ectoparasites range from the neotropical region to the southeastern USA. It was hypothesized that the abundance of the cotton rat associated louse (Hoplopleura hirsuta) and flea (Polygenis gwyni) would increase the further south and closer to the distribution centers of each of these ectoparasite species. …

Academic Skill Development - Inquiry Seminars Can Make A Difference: Evidence From A Quasi-Experimental Study, Christopher Justice, Wayne Warry, James Rice Jan 2009

Academic Skill Development - Inquiry Seminars Can Make A Difference: Evidence From A Quasi-Experimental Study, Christopher Justice, Wayne Warry, James Rice

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper examines whether a single first-year inquiry-based seminar can have a lasting impact on students’ academic skills. Fifty-four Inquiry students and 71 comparable students participated in three performance tests: a research skills exercise; an evaluation of oral presentation ability; and a test of critical reasoning and teamwork skills. In addition, participants completed a questionnaire focusing on learning approaches and experiences. The study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring long-term effects of relatively small educational interventions. Findings indicate that although universities may not be developing the skills they assume, a single first-year inquiry seminar can have far reaching effects on academic …

Teaching Social Justice Through Community Engagement, Rosemary B. Closson, Barbara Mullins Nelson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This research was motivated by our desire for our students to achieve a deeper appreciation for the social justice aspect of our field, adult education, and also to engage them with the community. We sought to accomplish these ends as students at two different state universities volunteered to build a home with Habitat for Humanity. Data was collected using focus groups and reflective papers and analyzed using a constant-comparative method. We found that student engagement with Habitat for Humanity resulted in students’ personal growth and to a lesser extent they learned something about the potential of adult education to contribute …

An Investigation Of Online And Face-To-Face Communication In General Chemistry, Gabriela C. Weaver, Kellie Green, Aliya Rahman, Erik Epp Jan 2009

An Investigation Of Online And Face-To-Face Communication In General Chemistry, Gabriela C. Weaver, Kellie Green, Aliya Rahman, Erik Epp

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This exploratory study investigated an online office hour and a face-to-face recitation for similarities and differences. The online office hour and face-to-face recitation were a part of general chemistry courses taught at different universities. The courses covered the same material at the same level. The results of the investigation revealed that in the online environment students must articulate their ideas clearly to convey them in a text-only medium. The written text seemed to help the instructor to identify misinterpretations made by the students. The instructor-dominated hierarchy between instructor and student is present in both environments. When comparing the percentage of …

Curriculum Studies The Creative Student: A Winnicottian Literary Analysis, Stephanie Leigh Perry

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Generalizations are made regarding the importance of creativity because creativity is considered to be the hallmark that sets humans apart from other animals. Creativity is a highly coveted gift that allows people the outlet by which to achieve greater joy, fulfillment, and meaning in their lives. However, relatively little is known about the origins of creativity and how to achieve greater creativity. Hoping to improve the quality of life of individuals and society, this dissertation examines the creativity that first springs up between a child and parent. In researching the relationship between children and parents, I draw heavily from the …

The Relationship Of Herpetofaunal Community Composition To An Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Modified Savanna Woodland Of Northern Tanzania, And Bioassays With African Elephants, Nabil A. Nasseri

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Herpetofauna diversity and richness were compared in areas that varied in the degree of elephant impact on the woody vegetation (Acacia spp.). The study was conducted at Ndarakwai Ranch in northeastern Tanzania. Elephants moving between three National Parks in Kenya and Tanzania visit this property. From August 2007 to March 2008, we erected drift fences and pitfall traps to sample herpetofaunal community and examined species richness and diversity within the damaged areas and in an exclusion plot. I captured 143 individuals comprising 13 species of reptiles in the order Sauria and nine species of anurans. Areas of heavy damage yielded …

Different Lattitudes, Different Attitudes: Educator Narratives Of A Professional Development In Honduras, Polly Stewart Holder Jan 2009

Different Lattitudes, Different Attitudes: Educator Narratives Of A Professional Development In Honduras, Polly Stewart Holder

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract:The curriculum studies field is marked by two significant concerns-the desire for a complex conversation about connection and diversity and the drive to address structural inequities. Drawing from the rich theoretical field of post positivist realism and in the intellectually rigorous tradition of curriculum studies, this inquiry traces the socioemotional and pedagogical development of five educators before and after a brief professional development experience abroad as they explored what a pedagogy of hope (Freire, 2004; Hooks, 2003) might look like. These five participants traveled to Honduras during the summer of 2009 with Heifer Project International (HPI), a non-profit, non …

“All Work And No Play” Reconsidered: The Use Of Games To Promote Motivation And Engagement In Instruction, Stephen Gareau, Ruth Guo

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study examined the role of games in graduate-level instructional technology courses, where the curriculum includes complex abstract theory and hands-on, practical skills. A qualitative approach was used in the study, relying on classroom observations of student behavior (recorded by digital photographs), informal student verbal comments, formal written feedback, and analysis of student game projects, as sources of data. Participants had the opportunity to serve in one or both roles of ‘educational game player’ and ‘educational game designer’. Issues involved in adapting existing games to classroom use are also discussed. Study findings reveal that games can be very useful in …

Two Minute Training In Class Significantly Increases The Use Of Professional Formatting In Student To Faculty Email Correspondence, Nancy Aguilar-Roca, Adrienne Williams, R Warrior, Diane O’Dowd Jan 2009

Two Minute Training In Class Significantly Increases The Use Of Professional Formatting In Student To Faculty Email Correspondence, Nancy Aguilar-Roca, Adrienne Williams, R Warrior, Diane O’Dowd

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Many university faculty value email as an important tool for communicating with colleagues, but express frustration with a high incidence of unprofessional email correspondence from students. The goals of this study were to document the frequency of specific formatting mistakes that contribute to faculty’s unfavorable perception of student emails and to determine if training could reduce these errors. We analyzed emails from students to three instructors of different rank and gender co-teaching two sections of a large introductory biology class: one section received two minutes of basic email etiquette training, the second section served as the control. We report a …

(Re)Considering The Scholarship Of Learning: Inviting The Elephant In The Room To Tea, Ashlee Cunsolo Willox, Dale Lackeyram

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This essay argues that the SoT(L) field has mistakenly equated learning solely to teaching and the teaching classroom, and has systematically ignored the other moments and opportunities within higher education institutes where learning and scholarly learning occurs—particularly within academic support and development programming. Therefore, we endeavour to discuss what we see as the elephant in the SoT(L) living room—learning, scholarly learning, and the Scholarship of Learning—and examine the ways in which learning and the Scholarship of Learning can be brought back into the SoT(L) discussion through an examination of academic support and development programming. Through the creation of a new …

Case Study Of An Urban Elementary School's Transition From Failing To Distinguished School Status, Carla Brice Ross Dec 2008

Case Study Of An Urban Elementary School's Transition From Failing To Distinguished School Status, Carla Brice Ross

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study seeks to understand how the multidimensional functioning of an urban high-poverty high-minority elementary school changed as it moved from failing school status to distinguished school status and to determine how school change promoted the organizational well-being of the school using a case study methodology. The multidimensional lenses used to view changes at Eagle included school purpose, culture, structure, leadership, organizational and professional learning, and teacher emotions. Using these lenses to view changes provides an explanation of not only how Eagle transitioned from failing school status to distinguished school status, but more importantly, how it has been able …

Teaching Science In The Bible Belt Of The South, Carole Crosby Gilbert Dec 2008

Teaching Science In The Bible Belt Of The South, Carole Crosby Gilbert

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is an inquiry that utilizes personal ' passionate ' participatory research (He & Phillion, 2008) to delve into the conflicting experiences encountered by science educators as they teach in the predominantly Christian environment of the rural South. Science standards require teachers to instruct students about scientific concepts that directly contradict theological ideology. Veteran and new teachers alike skate the edges of the chasm that separate science and religion in the performance of their job which is complicated by the homogeneity of the population. Church involvement is an integral part of this community. Christian churches anchor their respective communities providing …

Paradigm Shift In African American Funeral Customs: Looking Through The Lens Of Oral History And Consumer Culture, Carol Thomas Williams Dec 2008

Paradigm Shift In African American Funeral Customs: Looking Through The Lens Of Oral History And Consumer Culture, Carol Thomas Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The degree attainment of college students is a critical issue that institutions of higher education are considering. Colleges want to improve their retention, progression, and graduation rates for all students. Over the past decades men, based on the literature reviewed, have earned fewer degrees than women. In addition, men are not enrolling in college at the same rates as women. This study uses the NELS Database to analyze the factors that contribute to the degree attainment of men. The research used a logit model to determine the probability for the significant factors.

Storage And Utilization Of Hexamerin Proteins In The Pitcher Plant Mosquito, Wyomyia Smithii, Gangadasu E.C.V. Reddy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The acquisition of hexamerin proteins in the pitcher plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii shows a North-South cline in the southeastern United States. Adult female W. smithii in North Carolina are completely autogenous and larger in size (based on wing length). They are anautogenous in Florida and smaller in size. The adult females in Georgia are intermediate in size with both autogenous and anautogenous behavior. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE) of adult female Wyeomyia smithii revealed a specific temporal pattern of utilization of hexamerin proteins for egg protein, vitellogenin, synthesis. W. smithii from North Carolina utilize majority of stored …

Seasonal Patterns Of Plasma Testosterone Levels, Bite Force, And Locomotor Performance In Non-Territorial Male Lizards, Aspidoscelis Sexlineata, Timothy Adam Gowan Dec 2008

Seasonal Patterns Of Plasma Testosterone Levels, Bite Force, And Locomotor Performance In Non-Territorial Male Lizards, Aspidoscelis Sexlineata, Timothy Adam Gowan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The ability to perform key behaviors associated with reproduction, such as biting and locomotion in male lizards, has been linked to social dominance and reproductive success. The underlying mechanisms that govern variation in performance capacity, however, remain unclear. The steroid hormone testosterone mediates numerous traits associated with reproduction in male vertebrates and has been hypothesized to mediate variation in performance. This study examined seasonal patterns of circulating testosterone, morphology, bite force, and locomotor performance in a non-territorial lizard species to address this hypothesis. Male Aspidoscelis sexlineata (n=133) were collected throughout the active season, and testosterone levels and performance capacities were …
