Characterization Of Aquaporin 4 Protein Expression And Localization In Tissues Of The Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias), Christopher P. Cutler, Sheena Harmon, Jonathan Walsh, Kia Burch Feb 2012

Characterization Of Aquaporin 4 Protein Expression And Localization In Tissues Of The Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias), Christopher P. Cutler, Sheena Harmon, Jonathan Walsh, Kia Burch

Biology: Faculty Publications

The role of aquaporin water channels such as aquaporin 4 (Aqp4) in elasmobranchs such as the dogfish Squalus acanthias is completely unknown. This investigation set out to determine the expression and cellular and sub-cellular localization of Aqp4 protein in dogfish tissues. Two polyclonal antibodies were generated (AQP4/1 and AQP4/2) and these showed somewhat different characteristics in Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Western blots using the AQP4/1 antibody showed two bands (35.5 and 49.5 kDa) in most tissues in a similar fashion to mammals. Liver had an additional band of 57 kDa and rectal gland two further faint bands of 37.5 and …

Aquaporin 4 Is A Ubiquitously Expressed Isoform In The Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias) Shark, Christopher P. Cutler, Bryce Maciver, Gordon Cramb, Mark L. Zeidel Jan 2012

Aquaporin 4 Is A Ubiquitously Expressed Isoform In The Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias) Shark, Christopher P. Cutler, Bryce Maciver, Gordon Cramb, Mark L. Zeidel

Biology: Faculty Publications

The dogfish ortholog of aquaporin 4 (AQP4) was amplified from cDNA using degenerate PCR followed by cloning and sequencing. The complete coding region was then obtained using 5′ and 3′ RACE techniques. Alignment of the sequence with AQP4 amino acid sequences from other species showed that dogfish AQP4 has high levels (up to 65.3%) of homology with higher vertebrate sequences but lower levels of homology to Agnathan (38.2%) or teleost (57.5%) fish sequences. Northern blotting indicated that the dogfish mRNA was approximately 3.2 kb and was highly expressed in the rectal gland (a shark fluid secretory organ). Semi-quantitative PCR further …

Curriculum Circus: Juggling Curriculum, Science, And The Arts, Domenica Devine Jan 2012

Curriculum Circus: Juggling Curriculum, Science, And The Arts, Domenica Devine

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Education should open the door to better lives and better jobs. The fact is that it does not. In part, there are many causes including rigidity, political interference, and the separation between disciplines that we teach without context and without dialogue with our students. Specifically, I think that we should use education as a way to help students make better choices and have a better life. One way we can do it is by reconciling science with the other disciplines. And that is what is at the heart of curriculum studies.

There is a pervasive belief that the Western ideology …

Simulation-Based Performance Improvement Of A Defense Logistics Warehouse, Banu Y. Ekren, Gerald W. Evans, Sunderesh S. Heragu, John S. Usher Jan 2012

Simulation-Based Performance Improvement Of A Defense Logistics Warehouse, Banu Y. Ekren, Gerald W. Evans, Sunderesh S. Heragu, John S. Usher

12th IMHRC Proceedings (Gardanne, France – 2012)

Warehouses play a critical role in supply chains. They serve as a vital link between manufacturers and customers. In this study, we investigate performance of the largest warehouse (Eastern Distribution Center - EDC) of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) located in New Cumberland, PA and propose a near optimum design for the receiving area of the warehouse to improve its performance. First, we develop a simulation model of the system. Second, we interface an optimization model with the simulation in order to optimize the number of people working at the induction stations. In the optimization model, our goal is to …

Knowledge-Based Methods For Efficient Material Handling Equipment Development, Dirk Jodin, Christian Landschützer Jan 2012

Knowledge-Based Methods For Efficient Material Handling Equipment Development, Dirk Jodin, Christian Landschützer

12th IMHRC Proceedings (Gardanne, France – 2012)

This paper focuses on the Knowledge-based engineering (KBE) method and general Knowledge-based technologies for automated design of material handling products. As in vehicle and aerospace engineering this is a widespread technology, the authors try to introduce the main benefits of KBE for the material handling equipment design. The benefits of KBE, as faster and more accurate (safer) product development, customized products and knowledge of employees captured within a knowledge management system, let KBE hold many promising possibilities within, to deal with nowadays demands on engineering development, driven by cost reductions and time shortcuttings. The authors introduce the actual stage of …

The Identity Of A Plantation Structure: The Preliminary Analysis Of An Early Structure At Mont Repose Plantation, St. Luke's Parish, Jasper County, South Carolina, Heather R. Amaral

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

During the 2000 Archeology Field School, Georgia Southern University began an investigation of a nineteenth century plantation structure near Ridgeland, South Carolina. The plantation, Mont Repose, is an example of an inland rice plantation operated in this region during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The structure was initially believed to be a kitchen for this plantation but more recent fieldwork has suggested that this designation may need to be re-examined. Recent excavations have yielded specific artifacts suggesting that the structure may have sheltered a variety of daily functions in addition to specific kitchen activities. Preliminary Mean Ceramic Dating suggests a …

Survival Analysis Of Dialysis Patients Under Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches, Maryam Siddiqa, Mueen -Ud -Din Azad, Muhammad K. Pervaiz, Muhammad Ghias, Gulzar H. Shah, Uzma Hafeez Jan 2012

Survival Analysis Of Dialysis Patients Under Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches, Maryam Siddiqa, Mueen -Ud -Din Azad, Muhammad K. Pervaiz, Muhammad Ghias, Gulzar H. Shah, Uzma Hafeez

Health Policy & Management: Faculty Publications (2006-2018)

Dialysis is a recommended way of treatment for end stage kidney diseases and it provides a life saving procedure. Transplantation can also be useful source but it is restricted by financial limitations especially in developing countries like Pakistan. Censoring is an important part of the survival data which causes insensitivity to the usual procedures of analysis. A little work has been done in literature regarding the estimated survival time of dialysis patients in Pakistan. So, this study has estimated the median survival time of male/females patients separately by parametric and non-parametric approaches. Moreover, comparison of survival time to patients (50 …
