Thinking About The Gym: Greek Ideals, Newtonian Bodies, And Exercise In Early Eighteenth-Century England, Robert K. Batchelor Jun 2012

Thinking About The Gym: Greek Ideals, Newtonian Bodies, And Exercise In Early Eighteenth-Century England, Robert K. Batchelor

History: Faculty Publications

Revival of Greek ideas about exercise in the British and Irish Enlightenment by doctors led to a shift in understandings about the independent mind by establishing a relation between bodily and mental health. By the late 1730s, interest shifted away from mind and body and towards the sentiments and passions, which marked gender distinctions and held together national communities. Gilbert West’s writing about the Olympics in the 1740s indicated the difficulty in resolving tensions about exercise and sport as producing aristocratic distinction and violent passions as against their encouragement of healthy minds and civic virtue in the nation.

Rickettsia felis is an emerging human pathogen associated primarily with the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis. In this study, we investigated the presence of Rickettsia felis in C. felis from Guatemala and Costa Rica. Ctenocephalides felis were collected directly from dogs and cats, and analyzed by polymerase chain reaction for Rickettsia-specific fragments of 17-kDa protein, OmpA, and citrate synthase genes. Rickettsia DNA was detected in 64% (55 of 86) and 58% (47 of 81) of flea pools in Guatemala and Costa Rica, respectively. Sequencing of gltA fragments identified R. felis genotype URRWXCal2 in samples from both countries, and genotype Rf2125 in …

An Analysis Of Rigid Image Alignment Computer Vision Algorithms, Rajeshree R. Joshi May 2012

An Analysis Of Rigid Image Alignment Computer Vision Algorithms, Rajeshree R. Joshi

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Computer vision is a field of computer science that includes methods for acquiring, processing, and analyzing images. Image registration is one of the methods used in the computer vision field to transform different sets of data into one coordinate system to align images. Registration is important in order to be able to compare or integrate the data obtained from multiple measurements. Rigid image alignment is a type of image registration technique used to align two two-dimensional images into a common coordinate system based on two transformation parameters, translation and rotation. Before any comparative studies can be performed on two images …

Stakeholder's Perceptions Of Supplemental Online Learning For Credit Recovery, Theresa Jeanne Pettyjohn May 2012

Stakeholder's Perceptions Of Supplemental Online Learning For Credit Recovery, Theresa Jeanne Pettyjohn

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

District decision-makers and school leaders are faced with the challenge of evaluating various options to support at-risk students who are in danger of not graduating with their peers. Supplemental online learning is considered an innovative means of assisting students with credit recovery. Virtual schools and commercial curriculum providers have enumerated the benefits of online learning; however, the majority of the research has been conducted on post-secondary learners. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to understand stakeholders' perceptions of the benefits and challenges of high school supplemental online learning for credit recovery. This qualitative study employed a single case …

Preschool Children's Perceptions Of Fruit And Vegetable Messages And Their Relationship To Parenting Practices, And Child Knowledge, Preference, And Consumption, Andrew Rasmus Hansen May 2012

Preschool Children's Perceptions Of Fruit And Vegetable Messages And Their Relationship To Parenting Practices, And Child Knowledge, Preference, And Consumption, Andrew Rasmus Hansen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Studies involving school aged children (>5 years of age) have reported that positive and negative outcome messages influence a child's fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption. Positive outcome messages have the most significant mediating effect. However, there is a deficiency of studies involving children <5 years of age. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions preschool aged children (4 years old) have about F&V messages and how these perceptions relate to F&V knowledge, preference, and consumption. Methods: Parents (n =175) were surveyed about their nutrition behavior, parenting practices and the home food environment. Children's (n = 201) school lunch-time F&V consumption was recorded over five days. Children (n=195) were individually interviewed about their knowledge, preference, and perceptions of F&Vs. Child perceived messages were operationalized into Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) constructs to assist in behavior explanation. Pearson's correlations were used to determine variable relationships and an independent samples t-test was done to determine gender and socioeconomic status (SES) group differences. Results: Preschool children conveyed positive outcome expectancies (POE), negative outcome expectancies (NOE), and prompts most frequently when describing F&Vs. Knowledge was positively correlated to prompts, POE and NOE. Child preference (likes) was negatively correlated to NOE. Dislikes were positively correlated to NOE. Differences between income levels were observed. Discussion: This study provides information about the food environment from the perspective of both parent and child. Providing appropriate messages early in the developmental years of a child's life can play dividends for positive future health outcomes.

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Of The Year Awards Upon Teachers' Personal, School, And Professional Morale, Sherri Baker Butler May 2012

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Of The Year Awards Upon Teachers' Personal, School, And Professional Morale, Sherri Baker Butler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate k-12 teachers' perceptions of the influence of Teacher of the Year (TOTY) awards upon teachers' personal, school, and professional morale, as defined by Mackenzie (2007a). The sample was comprised of the 198 respondents to the researcher's online Teacher Recognition Schemes survey during July-August 2011. The study utilized a mixed methods approach that included collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative research data. Statistical significance was noted in the following areas: TOTY recipients perceived significantly greater influences of the award upon both personal and professional morale than did their non-recipient colleagues. Further, TOTY …

Home Field Advantage: Sprint Sensitivity To Ecologically Relevant Substrates In Lizards, Clint Edward Collins May 2012

Home Field Advantage: Sprint Sensitivity To Ecologically Relevant Substrates In Lizards, Clint Edward Collins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Effectively moving across variable substrates is important to all terrestrial animals. Much attention has been given to the effects of different substrates on locomotor performance in an attempt to link ecology and morphology. Sprint sensitivity is the decrease in sprint speed due to change in substrate. This study measures sprint sensitivity to substrate rugosity among six lizard species that occupy rocky, sandy, and/or semi-arboreal habitats. Lizards that use rocky habitats are less sensitive to changes in substrate rugosity, followed by arboreal lizards, and then by lizards that use sandy habitats. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that using rocks is highly correlated with …

Morphological Detection Of Genetic Introgression In Red Junglefowl (Gallus Gallus), Tomas Condon May 2012

Morphological Detection Of Genetic Introgression In Red Junglefowl (Gallus Gallus), Tomas Condon

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) is generally considered to be the primary wild ancestor of the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). Because they are common in much of the forested habitat of South and Southeast Asia, they have never been granted any formal conservation status. However, evidence suggests that genetic introgression from free-ranging, escaped, and feral domestic chickens might be so widespread and pervasive that Red Junglefowl may be endangered or even extinct in the wild. Because genetic markers have yet to be identified, detection of introgression has been limited to qualitative morphological traits. Thus, there is a need to …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate lower extremity neuromuscular activity patterns during gait transitions with continuously changing locomotion speeds.

Methods: Muscular activities related to gait transitions (walk to run and run to walk) induced by changing treadmill speed were compared to muscular activities during walk and run at constant speeds. All transition and constant speed conditions were conducted in similar speed range. Surface electromyographic activities of gluteus maximus (GM), rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), biceps femoris long head (BFL), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius (GA), and soleus (SL) were collected and analyzed. The influences of speed and …

An Examination Of An Optimism Training Intervention On Optimism Levels Of Ncaa Division I Athletes: A Single Subject Design, Anya Marie Salzgeber May 2012

An Examination Of An Optimism Training Intervention On Optimism Levels Of Ncaa Division I Athletes: A Single Subject Design, Anya Marie Salzgeber

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Optimism has been shown to provide many benefits, such as better health, increased satisfaction, confidence, motivation, and higher athletic performance. Research has also suggested the ability to increase the frequency of experiencing those benefits through the use of certain cognitive behavior therapy techniques. While the research shows the ability to increase optimism in a random sample of individuals, there is a lack of research on increasing optimism in athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an optimism training intervention on state optimism levels of NCAA Division 1 athletes. It was hypothesized the intervention will …

Thinking Through Objects, Brent S. Williams May 2012

Thinking Through Objects, Brent S. Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Thinking through objects: is the culmination of my research on objects and design. It is a reflection of my interest in the concise construction of a three dimensional object from cut, manipulated, and glued sheets of paper. As a material, paper has an implied commonness, familiarity, fragility, and temporariness, with clearly understood characteristics and qualities. In the same way, the objects the paper sculptures represent have a familiarity and temporariness about them, serving a specific role for a period of time before being replaced or updated. Selected from my own person experience, the works represent a personal history or narrative. …

Feminine Critique And Domestic Mystique: Representations Of The Home In Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Lyndsey Brown May 2012

Feminine Critique And Domestic Mystique: Representations Of The Home In Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Lyndsey Brown

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Elizabeth Madox Roberts, once considered one of the most important authors of the early twentieth century, has suffered critical neglect since her death in 1941. Though Robert Penn Warren wrote an important essay calling for her recovery in 1963, the political and social environment of the 1960s, including the advent of second-wave feminism, contributed, in part, to the continued neglect of Roberts's work. Roberts's texts do not actively protest social or economic injustice; instead, they focus on the internalized lives of her protagonists. This internalization is seen in Roberts's complex portrayal of the home and domesticity. This paper analyzes the …

On Discriminating Between Geometric Strategies Of Surface-Based Orientation, Bradley R. Sturz, Kent D. Bodily Apr 2012

On Discriminating Between Geometric Strategies Of Surface-Based Orientation, Bradley R. Sturz, Kent D. Bodily

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Recently, a debate has manifested in the spatial learning literature regarding the shape parameters by which mobile organisms orient with respect to the environment. On one hand are principal-axis-based strategies which suggest that organisms extract the major and minor principal axes of space which pass through the centroid and approximate length and width of the entire space, respectively. On the other hand are medial-axis-based strategies which suggest that organisms extract a trunk-and-branch system similar to the skeleton of a shape. With competing explanations comes the necessity to devise experiments capable of producing divergent predictions. Here, we suggest that a recent …
