Personal Resources Among Pre-Service Teachers: An Examination Of Links With Subjective Vitality And Occupational Commitment, Helena Granziera, Rebecca J. Collie, Caroline Mansfield
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The retention of pre-service teachers presents persistent and significant challenges for education and society alike. An emerging body of research suggests that the cultivation of personal resources may serve as a means to foster PSTs wellbeing, which is integral to fostering positive experiences within teacher education. We sought to examine this potential association in a sample of 664 Australian teachers by investigating the associations between five personal resources - adaptability, workplace buoyancy, psychological detachment, optimism, and social self-efficacy - and two teaching-related outcomes: subjective vitality at work and occupational commitment. Using structural equation modelling, analysis of data collected from PSTs …

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Current diagnostic tools are limited, especially in low-resource settings. The World Health Organization's (WHO) Target Product Profiles (TPPs) call for rapid, non-sputum-based diagnostics with high sensitivity and specificity. This study evaluates our previously published TB-associated host-immune biomarkers alongside small-size signatures from other studies, in our previously published non-human primate (NHP) TB infection study dataset (GSE76703) and two previously published human datasets (GSE144127, GSE42834), which include other disease group comparators, including sarcoidosis. These were also evaluated in a small-scale, exploratory qPCR pilot study to assess the feasibility …

Peak Lower Limb Joint Angles Are Weak Predictors Of Hamstring Length Change During Sprinting, Shayne Vial, Jodie Cochrane Wilkie, Anthony J. Blazevich, Daniel Kadlec
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Non-contact hamstring injuries (HSIs) commonly occur during the late swing phase of sprinting, when muscle–tendon units (MTUs) approach maximum length. Although sagittal-plane pelvis, hip and knee angles are often used as surrogate measures of overall hamstring lengthening, their predictive validity remains uncertain. This study investigated whether peak three-dimensional lower limb joint angles predict length change in the biarticular hamstring MTUs from peak hip flexion through to toe off (0–100 %) in fourteen intermediate-level male soccer players sprinting at maximal speed (8.56 ± 0.47 m·s−1). Participant-specific musculoskeletal models were used to compute MTU lengths for the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), …

The cement industry is a major source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions due to its energy-intensive production process and calcination of limestone. Producing one ton of cement emits approximately one ton of CO2, and cement accounts for about 5% to 8% of global CO2 emissions. In this context, cement-less one-part (“just-add-water”) ambient-cured geopolymer concrete (GPC) has gained attention due to its environmental friendliness and practicality for large-scale cast-in-situ construction. However, field adoption remains limited, mainly due to the scarcity of data on mechanical properties and durability, as well as the lack of widely accepted standards and specifications. This paper is part …

Periods of low energy availability (LEA) are common in elite athletes and typically arise from reduced energy intake, often involving some degree of carbohydrate (CHO) restriction. Whether the metabolic profile created by energy restriction per se is distinct compared to that driven by CHO restriction is unknown. Using untargeted metabolomics, we examined metabolic perturbations linked to CHO restriction and energy restriction in plasma from elite male endurance athletes. In a semi-randomized controlled trial, athletes (n = 20) completed one of three 5-day dietary interventions: high energy-high CHO (HCHO); LEA (energy-restricted, CHO-reduced); or low-CHO, high-fat (LCHF; energy-matched, CHO-restricted). Plasma samples were …

Freight transportation within the hub-assisted systems enhances economies of scale for carriers by consolidating logistics operations through central hubs, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Optimally designing such transportation systems creates competitive advantages for carriers, enabling them to reduce shipping prices and, consequently, capture a larger share of the market from shippers’ demand. This research addresses the joint optimization of intermodal transportation hub network design and pricing decisions under price-dependent and uncertain demand, with the objective of maximizing carrier's profit. Since the uncertain shipping demand follows a nonlinear relation with price, the carrier not only optimizes shipping network design but …

CO2 microbubbles show significant potential in carbon capture and storage (CCS) through enhancing CO2 dissolution and improving the residual trapping mechanism. To take full advantage of microbubbles, maximizing their generation by selecting the optimal operational conditions, including injection pressure and flow rate, is essential. In this study, we examined a wide range of experimental conditions to quantitatively evaluate the potential of a porous ceramic membrane for producing CO2 microbubbles in a chemical-free manner. In particular, the effects of injection pressure (5.0–10.0 MPa) and CO2 flow rate (0.25–5 mL/min) on mean bubble diameter (DMB) and microbubble yield efficiency (YMB) were systematically …

Background: Assessing bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents is essential for detecting skeletal deficits and fracture risk. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) has gained increasing attention as a valuable imaging tool due to its ability to assess bone quality. Unlike dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, pQCT provides volumetric BMD measurements and distinguishes between cortical and trabecular compartments. Despite these advantages, its clinical adoption remains limited due to the lack of reference data and standardized protocols. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science from inception to November 2024. Studies reporting pQCT-derived tibial BMD …

Dysregulation of the deubiquitinating enzyme Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 14 (USP14) is implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases, and IU1, an allosteric inhibitor, has shown neuroprotective effects by reducing protein aggregate toxicity. This study aimed to develop new IU1 analogues and evaluate their ability to mitigate amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation and toxicity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) cell and Caenorhabditis elegans worm models. IU1 and 71 newly designed analogues identified using the AtomNet® virtual screening platform were assessed in an amyloid precursor protein-C terminal fragment/amyloid-β (APP-C99/Aβ)-producing AD cell model using a high-throughput toxicity assay. Lead compounds were further evaluated for their effects on neurodegeneration, …

Thin-film photovoltaic technologies such as perovskite, CIGS, CdTe, and organic solar cells have gained considerable attention due to their potential for low-cost, flexible, and lightweight energy conversion solutions, necessitating advanced components to optimize device efficiency and stability. A complex component in these devices is the electron transport layer (ETL), which governs charge extraction and recombination dynamics, directly impacting overall performance. Despite numerous advances, there remains a lack of unified understanding of ETL materials and interface engineering, highlighting a research gap in cross-technology comparative studies and universal design principles. This review addresses this gap by systematically analyzing ETL materials, interface modification …

Bladder cancer (BC) represents the most prevalent malignancy within the urinary system. Mounting evidence underscores the critical involvement of ferroptosis in cancer pathogenesis; Consequently, this study delves into its molecular underpinnings and therapeutic potential specifically in BC. Methods: We analyzed gene expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Om-nibus (GEO) repositories. Ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) were selected from the FerrDb database. Utilizing systematic bioinformatics analyses, we identify differentially expressed and prognostic FRGs and construct an FRGs prognostic model. Combined with protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis, solute carrier family 3 member 2 (SLC3A2) was selected for further study. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Membrane Distillation (MD) systems have the potential to tackle the growing global water demand. Within various MD systems, Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VMD) systems are particularly important in addressing this issue. Hollow Fibre VMD (HF-VMD) and Flat Sheet VMD (FS-VMD) are the two main configurations of VMD systems, where limited studies are available on their comparison and optimisation under identical operational conditions. This study firstly charts the mathematical modelling of HF-VMD and FS-VMD systems that have been developed, accounting for the amount of flux, Gain Output Ratio (GOR), Temperature Polarisation Coefficient (TPC), and Specific Thermal Energy Consumption (STEC) of both configurations …

Despite the nexus between cardiovascular health and frailty, the relevance of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI), a biomarker of myocardial injury, to frailty is poorly understood. We examined whether hs-cTnI concentrations were associated with frailty in a well-characterized cohort of older women. A total of 1151 community-dwelling women from the Perth Longitudinal Study of Aging Women (mean age ± SD = 75.2 ± 2.7 years) were included. Frailty was operationalized using a validated frailty index (FI) of cumulative deficits and a modified Fried phenotype. Plasma hs-cTnI were categorized into quartiles. Cross-sectional associations between hs-cTnI quartiles and frailty were assessed using …
