The Potential For Work Redesign Within Contemporary Organizations, Chris Du Boulay
The Potential For Work Redesign Within Contemporary Organizations, Chris Du Boulay
Research outputs pre 2011
Work redesign is not only important for the wellbeing of the employee, but it has also captured the imagination and zeal of some employers. Recent studies (Hendry, 1990 ; Cordery, Mueller & Smith, 1991) have indicated that employees become more positive and enthusiastic towards their jobs and employers experience gains in productivity. Over the years many people have examined the concept and need for work redesign (Hackman & Oldham, 1976; Galbraith, 1984; Pasmore, 1988). Concepts such as work simplification, job enrichment, job enlargement, socio-technical redesign, alternative work arrangements and quality of work life programmes have been introduced, developed and implemented. …
Recreation Benefits: The Benefit-Based Approach To Recreation Planning; Why Wellness; Personal/Social Relationships And Wellness, Elery Hamilton Smith
Recreation Benefits: The Benefit-Based Approach To Recreation Planning; Why Wellness; Personal/Social Relationships And Wellness, Elery Hamilton Smith
Research outputs pre 2011
The identification and measurement of the benefits which result from leisure and recreation is currently a major concern of both recreation researchers and recreation managers. It has always been assumed that recreation is beneficial; in fact, part of the basic ideology of recreation is that recreational activity is 'bad' for somebody and has also diverted attention from the very important task of developing a critical and valid understanding of what benefits actually result and how they are generated...
Nursing Health Assessment: A Meta-Analysis, J. E. Jarvis
Nursing Health Assessment: A Meta-Analysis, J. E. Jarvis
Theses : Honours
Health assessment is the responsibility of all nurses (McCain, 1965), however, it is frequently discussed without reference to any global definition and studied under a variety of conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of clinical setting, year of assessment, nursing education and experience in nursing on the scope of nursing health assessment using meta-analysis techniques. Sixty five research journal articles were located of which 16 primary studies were selected and grouped for analysis. The result of this analysis indicates there is a significant difference in the scope of nursing health assessment in varied clinical settings …

Amusement Centres And Social Risk : A Survey Into The Social Risks That Amusement Centres Pose For Young People Who Use Them, Howard Sercombe
Research outputs pre 2011
This report summarises the indings of a survey amongst respondents connected with the amusement and leisure centre industry in the inner city area of Perth in April 1988.
The survey canvassed perception of the social composition of users of the amusement centres and the pattern of centre usage. It asked questions concerning a number of areas of social concern that are sometimes raised in connection with centres, and canvassed opinion regarding the need for regulation or licensing of centres.
Briefly, the survey found that:
There is no evidence to suggest that amusement centres are in any way connected with drug …

Youth Work Today: A Profile, Rob White, Suzanna Omelczuk, Rod Underwood
Research outputs pre 2011
The youth affairs field has undergone a significant transition, in terms of the types of issues central to the field and the characteristics of people working in the field, in recent years. The purpose of this study is to identify the attributes of youth workers currently engaged in the field, the activities undertaken by those workers, and the social backgrounds of young people with whom they work. More than one hundred youth workers throughout Western Australia participated in the survey. The results of the investigation describe the educational background and occupational experience of youth workers, and the characteristics of the …
Exploring Seniors Perceptions Of Crime: A Report Of A Social Survey Conducted In The City Of Nedlands, Diana Whyte, David Wiles, Tessa Tarrant
Exploring Seniors Perceptions Of Crime: A Report Of A Social Survey Conducted In The City Of Nedlands, Diana Whyte, David Wiles, Tessa Tarrant
Research outputs pre 2011
In this exploratory survey we investigated the perceptions of, and fear of crime in elderly persons. Interviews were conducted with eighteen elderly residents of the City of Nedlands, an age-heterogeneous community which enjoys a high socio-economic status. Due to the small number of people interviewed the survey is qualitative in character but reflects the perceptions of a particular segment of metropolitan elderly persons. It was shown that the participants consider that there is mere crime, of a more serious and threatening nature, in present times than there was fifty years age. There was no indication of fear of becoming victims …

The main purpose of the study was to exchange ideas with selected academics and experts in women's health. The information acquired will be applied in courses in women's health offered by Edith Cowan University and in the ongoing development of a series of videotape productions on women's …
Should Teaching Come Before Education?, Anne Winning
Should Teaching Come Before Education?, Anne Winning
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The present system of teacher education for primary school teachers in Queensland has an interesting emphasis if the names of the degree programmes reflect an underlying policy or suggest a value stance. The system of teacher preparation suggests that one first concentrates on learning to "teach" and then follows a time when one considers how to "educate." Is this a case of unfortunate nomenclature?
Experiences In Gifted Education : Implications For Teaching Strategies For A Clever Country., Lesley Newhouse-Maiden, Malcolm Washbourne
Experiences In Gifted Education : Implications For Teaching Strategies For A Clever Country., Lesley Newhouse-Maiden, Malcolm Washbourne
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In preparation for a workshop at Monash University, where a group of Australian educators were to be involved in writing a book based on their collective wisdom and interest in the fostering of excellence in young people and children in the 1990's, the present writers engaged in a reflective exercise in ascertaining how best to educate our most talented science students. However, in the eventual chapter written by Newhouse et al. (in Goodall and Culhane 1991:70), the theme was related to the concept of empowering a whole school community, 'globally' a far cry from the notion of empowering talented students …

The instruments were piloted twice in Western …
Deconstructing Alice's 'Wonderlands': The Non-Sense Of Nonsense?, Beverley Farr
Deconstructing Alice's 'Wonderlands': The Non-Sense Of Nonsense?, Beverley Farr
Theses : Honours
The profusion of literary criticism surrounding the Alice books affirms the heterogeneous nature of the texts 'Which resist the imposition of an exclusive, closed interpretation. A deconstructive reading of the texts demonstrates the tendency of the books toward multiple meanings, revealing how they are transgressive of notions of coherence and structure. Utilising some of the concepts of Jacques Lacan to examine the texts beyond the traditional analytic readings, language is shown to be a signifying chain of desire, structured like the unconscious. Alice becomes Lacan's split subject, banished to the world of language where she finds herself enmeshed in an …
An Investigation Of Communication Strategy Use In Reception, Kaye Malcolm
An Investigation Of Communication Strategy Use In Reception, Kaye Malcolm
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis is a theoretical and empirical investigation of communication strategy use in the receptive behaviour of second/foreign language learners. The investigation is descriptive in design, and seeks to describe the phenomenon of communication strategies both as a constituent of communicative discourse and as a part of that discourse, in inter-relationship with other constituents. The theoretical framework for the research is an interactional one. Description is sought from analysis of the dynamics of communication. The need for a study on communication strategy use in reception lies in the fact that second/foreign language learners see reception as being particularly problematic, and …

Making The Invisible Visable : An Analysis Of The Home And Community Care Program : A Socialist-Feminist Perspective, Daniela Anna Stehlik
Making The Invisible Visable : An Analysis Of The Home And Community Care Program : A Socialist-Feminist Perspective, Daniela Anna Stehlik
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
As the population of Australia ages, social policy and human service practice in the field of aged care is increasingly important and relevant. The Home and community Care (H.A.C.C.) Program was established in 1985 by the Labor Government as a response to a demand for more community services for the frail aged and was designed to reduce the incidence of institutionalisation by increasing home care services. In this way the Home and Community Care Program is seen as linchpin in the Federal Government's initiative to create an efficient and cost-effective aged care policy to contend with the future growth of …
Job Factors Contributing To The Job Satisfaction And Job Dissatisfaction Of Primary Principals In One Ministry Of Education District In Western Australia, G. R. Martin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Recent changes in the Western Australian education system, resulting from the release and implementation of Better Schools in Western Australia: A Programme for Improvement (1987), have induced significant changes in the nature of the Western Australian primary principalship. Within this context of change, this research explores job factors contributing to the job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction of primary principals in one Ministry of Education district in Western Australia. Studies based on Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory, conducted in educational and non-educational settings, in addition to previous principal job satisfaction research were important in the development of the study's conceptual framework and research …

The Relationship Between Diet And Exercise And The Occurrence Of Headaches In Adolescents Aged 12 To 15 Years, Paula Hahnel
Theses : Honours
Headaches in adolescents present school nurses with a challenge. Al though separate research has focussed on headaches in children, and on dietary and exercises practices of adolescents, little attention has been paid to the relationship between the two. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether adolescents' dietary and exercise practices affect the occurrence of their headaches. The randomly selected sample consisted of 97 adolescents, aged 12 to 15 years, from a Perth metropolitan high school. Males accounted for 28%. Of respondents, and females 72%.. The average age was 13.5 years. All students taking part in the study were …
Literacy In Perspective., Ken Willis
Literacy In Perspective., Ken Willis
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
One aim of this Joint National Conference of the Australian Reading Association and the Australian Association of Teachers of English is to develop a National Literacy Policy. An essential pre-requisite to developing a policy on literacy is a definition of the term ''literacy''. This paper argues that if this definition is stated in general terms it will be of questionable value, as it will be open to multiple interpretations dependent on the context.
The Effect Of Shift Length On The Number Of Needlestick Injuries In An Acute Private Hospital, J. Mcmahon
The Effect Of Shift Length On The Number Of Needlestick Injuries In An Acute Private Hospital, J. Mcmahon
Theses : Honours
Needlestick injuries present a hazard to both nurse and patient in that they may be the source of transmission of Hepatitis B and the human immunodeficiency virus. It is therefore important to study the factors which either precipitate or prevent needlestick injury. This study examined the effect of shift length on the number of needlestick injuries. Variables which were tested included length of shift, location of work, time of shift, and time within shift. A descriptive survey was used to demonstrate a relationship between any of these variables and the occurrence of needlestick injuries. The study included two data sources: …
Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association : 10th Anniversary, 1980-1990, Alumni Association
Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association : 10th Anniversary, 1980-1990, Alumni Association
Research outputs pre 2011
On the 9th June 1990, the Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association completed its first 10 years. From a fairly humble beginning the Association has continued to grow until it now has in excess of 250 members.
These first ten years have been most traumatic for the Claremont College. In 1982 the College lost its identity as a separate autonomous institution when it was amalgamated to become one of the campuses of the West Australian College of Advanced Education. In 1989 the campus closed its doors on its last teacher education graduates and ceased its role as a teacher education institution. …
The Effect Of The Teaching Of An Explicit Top-Level Expository Text Structure On The Structure Of Year Seven Children's Semantic Memory, Les Phul
Theses : Honours
In order to examine the effect of the teaching of a top-level expository structure through writing on children's schemata for text structure, children in year seven were asked to display graphically the relationships between 42 randomly presented text items related to a central topic. The text items were designed to approximate the kinds of information that may be found in an encyclopaedia or a science text about a given topic. One class of children was then allocated to the control group and the other to the experimental group. The experimental group was taught the top-level structure for a scientific report …

Introductory Notes On Australian Social Gerontology : Edited Transcript Of A Guest Lecture For The Unit "Human Development", Delivered At Claremont Campus On Tuesday, 29 May 1990, David Wiles
Research outputs pre 2011
In a 'greying' Australia demographic realities should be articulated clearly so as to meet the challenges of the future. The aged population will 'peak' in 2021 A.D., and there is an increasing social awareness of this population trend. While the causes of longevity remain to be established, the improvement of individual life expectancy means that many seniors will spend decades in 'retirement'. Women, those of non- English speaking backgrounds, and aboriginals are sections of the aged population having special prob+ems. Comparative social policy, however, suggests that the future funding of aged care is not problematical, though national commitment is required. …
Quality Of Life Issues In Residential Services For Elderly People : Perceptions Of Service Providers, Val Roche
Quality Of Life Issues In Residential Services For Elderly People : Perceptions Of Service Providers, Val Roche
Research outputs pre 2011
The report contains feedback from a study undertaken by students enrolled in the Residential Care Unit, a part of the A.D.A. Working with the Aged course. The subject for study was "Quality of life in residential services for elderly people. This was seen as an important area for investigation because the number of elderly people will increase to 15 per cent of Australia's population by the year 2021, and it is likely that even with more community support services, some people will need residential care...
Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles
Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper explores issues in historiography and history as reflected in some of the literary and didactic works of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). An artist of eternal merit, Tolstoy's creativity manifests his intense personal, artistic, and philosophical conflicts. In addressing the 'accursed questions' afflicting his times and society, Tolstoy became the muse of nineteenth-century Russia, but his works embody essential themes in historiography, literature, and history. Attempting to impose a unitary vision upon the rich diversity of reality, yet failing, in his literary works Tolstoy explores the inaccessibility and multiplicity of historical causation, and the dilemmas of freedom and necessity, along …

Selecting Content For An Introductory Training Course In Industrial Relations, Helen Handmer
Theses : Honours
A nine-member panel with acknowledged expertise across a broad range of industrial relations interests made up the respondent population. Panelists opinions were collected, summarised, then re-submitted to the panel with an invitation to review their opinions in the light of the group summary. This process was repeated three times -the first consisting of individual progressively structured interviews, the other two being written surveys. A high level of consensus was achieved, both in ;1 content selections and in the reasons for choosing such topics. This resulted in the development of a course outline consisting of the following major topics - historical …
The Process Of Smoking Acquisition Among Girls And Boys (Year 8) At Balga Senior High School, Sharon Mcbride
The Process Of Smoking Acquisition Among Girls And Boys (Year 8) At Balga Senior High School, Sharon Mcbride
Theses : Honours
Many smokers acquire their habit during adolescence, largely because of social forces experienced by people in that age group. In Australia, more girls than boys are smoking, and an increasing number of women are contracting diseases associated with smoking. More women are dying from Lung Cancer and female smokers make themselves vulnerable to a range of disorders related to fertility and pregnancy. The fact that more girls are taking up regular smoking has become an important health concern. This study explores gender related differences in smoking acquisition among a sample population of one hundred and six year eight students attending …

Pastoral Care In Schools : Some Implications For Teacher Training, Ron Best
Pastoral Care In Schools : Some Implications For Teacher Training, Ron Best
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In Britain, teachers' concern for children as more than "empty buckets to be filled with knowledge" is widely recognised as a professional obligation. It is also legally enshrined in the concept of the teacher in loco parentis. There is nothing particularly new about this. Arnold of Rugby placed academic achievement third behind the promotion of Christian values and "gentlemanly conduct" in the priorities he set for his staff, and in public boarding-schools the roles of house master and matron were considered important means by which pupils' personal, physical and (supposedly) moral well-being were protected. What is relatively new is the …
