Scientific Crosstalk: Natural Language Processing, Praveshika Bhandari Jun 2026

Scientific Crosstalk: Natural Language Processing, Praveshika Bhandari

Theses and Dissertations

While sentiment analysis has made significant strides in domains such as social media and personal correspondence, its application to formal scientific writings remains under-explored. The crosstalk between emotional expressions in personal and professional communications has also received limited attention despite its potential to reveal insights into the emotional drivers of scientific creativity. Our research introduces a computational framework designed to detect and quantify emotional expressions across various documents over time. Leveraging state-of-the-art transformer models fine-tuned on domain-specific corpora, the framework models emotional tone distribution. Integrating emotion analysis with knowledge graph modeling enables the exploration of emotional trends alongside key scientific …

Self-Care: A Beneficial Intervention For Nursing Faculty, Paige Baade Jun 2026

Self-Care: A Beneficial Intervention For Nursing Faculty, Paige Baade

Nursing Capstones

Burnout among nursing faculty is a growing concern that impacts job satisfaction, well-being, and the ability to effectively educate future nurses. The purpose of this project was to investigate the impact of self-care on nursing faculty stress and burnout levels, overall well-being, and job satisfaction by comparing pre-test and post-test results after regular self-care implementation. This quasi-experimental project was conducted in a Midwest undergraduate nursing program and the sample included full-time nursing faculty who voluntarily participated. Data was collected through a survey to measure perceived stress, well-being, and job satisfaction, and degrees of burnout. Results indicated modest improvements in perceived …

Fentanyl Mediated Distortions Of Phasic Dopamine Release Dynamics Encoding Natural Reward And Aversive Processing In The Mammalian Mesolimbic Circuit, Oliver P. Culver Iv Jun 2026

Fentanyl Mediated Distortions Of Phasic Dopamine Release Dynamics Encoding Natural Reward And Aversive Processing In The Mammalian Mesolimbic Circuit, Oliver P. Culver Iv

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonists are recognized to disinhibit tonic dopamine (DA) in the ventral striatum (VS), contributing to opioid addiction and euphoria. However, MOR agonists can also inhibit non-drug reward-seeking, and disrupt conditioned responding to aversive stimuli, a phenomenon not readily explained by tonic DA disinhibition. We hypothesized that this effect could be due in part to disruption of phasic DA responses to conditioned stimuli (CS) which critically shape and maintain behaviors during naturalistic reward and aversive processing. Because MOR effects on CS-evoked phasic DA are largely unexamined, we conducted in vivo fiber photometric recordings in water-deprived male and …

Effects Of Divided Attention On Linguistic Tasks And Speech In Healthy Young Adults, Allison Coca

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of divided attention on concurrent speech and linguistic tasks by investigating performance on three linguistic computer tasks (phonological, syntactic, and semantic) and speech kinematics. Thirty-seven healthy young adults (19 male, 18 female) ages 19-30 were recorded performing a sentence repetition task using electromagnetic articulography. Each participant completed the sentence repetition once in isolation and once concurrently with each of the three linguistic computer tasks. Participants also completed computer tasks in isolation. Significant dual-task effects were observed on total number of correct responses in the phonological and syntactic linguistic tasks. No …

Ai Insurance Chatbots And Phygital Service Engagement: The Triadic Impact Of Trust-Anxiety-Complexity- On Aging Consumers, Rajat Subhra Chatterjee, Bindu Singh, Ranjan Chaudhuri, Sheshadri Chatterjee, Demetris Vrontis, Pantea Foroudi

Plymouth Business School

This study examines elderly consumers’ perceptions of the design of AI insurance chatbot services in a phygital context. Drawing on the extended reality technology (ERT) framework and the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) model, it explores the cognitive–affective dynamics shaping chatbot adoption in a sensitive service setting. Data were collected from 396 elderly consumers of major insurance companies in Malaysia and analysed using structural equation modelling to assess mediating and moderating effects. Findings show that perceived trust critically mediates the relationship between cognitive factors and chatbot adoption. Technology anxiety and perceived complexity strongly moderate the trust–usage relationship, confirming a triadic interaction. The study …

Context, Cell Phones & Critical Action: A Multi-Method Approach To Documenting Facilitators Of Online Youth Activism, Mariah Kornbluh, Ellen Middaugh, Sherry Bell, Gabi Garcia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Young people are increasingly forming and expressing civic identities in digital spaces. Yet, digital media literacy interventions have had limited success translating these competencies into sociopolitical action and, in some cases, may even constrain youth online civic engagement. This sequential mixed-methods study examines factors shaping youth online critical action using panel survey data (n = 704), followed by qualitative re-analysis of interviews (n = 23) with youth aged 15–24 to further unpack patterns identified in the survey findings. Guided by critical consciousness and neo-ecological frameworks, quantitative findings indicate that exposure to digital media education, particularly instruction focused on researching and …

Social Influencers Reduce Infection Burden And Modify Epidemic Lag In Group-Structured Populations, Aja Sutton, Adam Z. Reynolds, Matthew A. Turner, James Holland Jones Jun 2026

Social Influencers Reduce Infection Burden And Modify Epidemic Lag In Group-Structured Populations, Aja Sutton, Adam Z. Reynolds, Matthew A. Turner, James Holland Jones

Publications, Reports and Presentations

The impact of online social influence on social learning, health behaviour and population health is a new, rapidly developing area of study. Previous research focused specifically on digital influencers suggests they may be able to affect group-level diffusion of health-protective behaviours such that they modify epidemic outcomes. However, formal models have yet to test the intuitive hypothesis that the effect of digital influencers is sufficient to generate tangible real-world effects on epidemics. We develop an agent-based model that incorporates digital influencers into an epidemic scenario to test hypotheses about how competing influence messages affect the diffusion of health-protective behaviours throughout …

Examination Of Gastrointestinal Visceral Sensitivity In The Maintenance Of Restrictive Eating Disorders, Kendall N. Poovey Jun 2026

Examination Of Gastrointestinal Visceral Sensitivity In The Maintenance Of Restrictive Eating Disorders, Kendall N. Poovey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aversive conditioning theories of restrictive eating disorders propose that gastrointestinal (GI) visceral sensitivity (i.e., hypervigilant monitoring and worry about GI sensations) is implicated in the maintenance of restrictive eating disorders (i.e., anorexia nervosa [AN], atypical anorexia nervosa [AAN], and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder [ARFID]). Specifically, a negative reinforcement process is posited in which disordered eating behaviors (e.g., restriction, purging) help to mitigate or avoid GI-related distress, and are thereby reinforced. However, this theorized process has yet to be tested. For the current study, participants from the University of South Florida and surrounding Tampa community who screened positive for a restrictive …

Perspectives On Civil And Social Peace In Palestine: Internal Factors And Forces That Obstruct Palestinian Civil Peace, Osama Tawfeeq Jarrar Dr., Prof. Ayman Talal Yousef Professor Jun 2026

Perspectives On Civil And Social Peace In Palestine: Internal Factors And Forces That Obstruct Palestinian Civil Peace, Osama Tawfeeq Jarrar Dr., Prof. Ayman Talal Yousef Professor

Peace and Conflict Studies

The process of building “civil peace” is a dynamic process that aims at creating appropriate conditions of peace when conflicting forces, groups, and polices diverge. This concept is relative because it contains components that balance the internal and external environment, where peace-building is not undertaken in a historical or cultural vacuum, but rather works to develop comprehensive civic and national values: “The movement from the present toward the desired future is not a straight line, but rather a set of dynamic initiatives” (Lederach, 10). Civil peace entails social life as distinct from internal conflicts and tensions. Attaining civil peace thus …

Peace And Reconciliation In Mozambique: The Influence Of Economic Support On The Reintegration Of Ex-Combatants In Murrupula District, Isac José Alberto Jun 2026

Peace And Reconciliation In Mozambique: The Influence Of Economic Support On The Reintegration Of Ex-Combatants In Murrupula District, Isac José Alberto

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article analyses the impact of economic support on the reintegration of ex-combatants in Murrupula District, Mozambique, under the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme. Based on a qualitative methodology and a case study, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and direct observation were conducted. The results reveal structural limitations, such as weak coordination between implementers and beneficiaries, scarcity of funding, and the disconnect between intervention strategies and local realities. These weaknesses have compromised the economic inclusion of ex-combatants and accentuated tensions with the receiving communities, aggravated by a context of widespread poverty. The study also highlights the importance of informal networks …

Social Innovation In The Peacebuilding Sector, Michelle Helman, Phd, Katherine Ronderos, Mariafernanda Burgos-Ariza

Peace and Conflict Studies

Social innovation is an expanding practice in the peacebuilding sector. In this article, three peace scholar-practitioners reflect on our experiences as peacebuilders and consider the utility, tensions, and possibilities for peace and social innovation in theory and in practice. We draw insights gleaned through a focus group workshop with peacebuilding colleagues and highlight three case study examples from Colombia, the Philippines, and Kenya, each demonstrating the challenges and opportunities of social innovation in the peace sector. In doing so, we offer a reimagining of- and recommended action steps to engage innovation through a collaborative, feminist design approach. This article contributes …

Black Men, Aces, And Family Support: Pathways To College Persistence And Graduation, Tessa J. Davis Jun 2026

Black Men, Aces, And Family Support: Pathways To College Persistence And Graduation, Tessa J. Davis

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The problem is that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect the coping skills of college students, resulting in challenges in graduating from higher education institutions. The goal of the study was to analyze how temporality, sociality, and spatiality intersect to influence these individuals’ journeys to graduation. The research addressed the critical issue of how ACEs influence academic persistence and success among this demographic, who are disproportionately affected by challenges due to childhood adversities. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry design, the study delved into the lived experiences of 10 Black males aged 24–65 from the Southeastern United States who graduated from higher …

Leadership Disruption, Change Management, And Organizational Resilience In U.S. Higher Education, Moses Masibo Dr., Ashley Rose Charwood Dr. Jun 2026

Leadership Disruption, Change Management, And Organizational Resilience In U.S. Higher Education, Moses Masibo Dr., Ashley Rose Charwood Dr.

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Until recently, higher education in the United States was widely perceived as a primary pathway to social mobility and economic advancement. However, contemporary institutions now face sustained disruption driven by demographic shifts, affordability concerns, political pressures, leadership turnover, and rapid technological change. In this reflection paper, we examine how leadership disruption has become both a symptom and a catalyst of broader systemic challenges in U.S. higher education. Drawing on current scholarship, we argue that disruption, when accompanied by human-centered change management and intentional approaches to organizational resilience, can foster institutional clarity, adaptability, and renewal. Specifically, we explore the dynamics of …

Reality Check: Examining Perceived Stress In Student Pharmacists Using Virtual Reality, Kimberly B. Garza, Channing R. Ford, Kristen L. Helms

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The impact of stress on learning is complex and multifaceted, and there is a balance between stress that promotes learning and that which inhibits it. This study presents a qualitative analysis of students’ responses to a questionnaire about their experience using virtual reality (VR) in a perspective-taking task to promote empathy for patients with physical limitations due to arthritis of the hands. Including data collected from a first-year course in 2023, 2024, and 2025, 214 students ranked their stress while experiencing the task, and those who ranked stress as anything other than “no stress” were asked to elaborate on the …

Her Fire This Time: Black Women Faculty And The Liberatory Pedagogy That Can't Wait, R. Danielle Scott, Andi Toliver-Smith, Nailah Smith

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The purpose of this paper is to document the experiences of Black women faculty sustaining culturally responsive, justice-oriented, liberatory pedagogy in the current sociopolitical climate of higher education. In the context of coordinated attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion infrastructure, the erasure of culturally responsive accreditation standards in Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences (SLHS), and the unwritten expectation that Black women faculty absorb the weight of equity work that institutions have abandoned, this paper examines the sustaining forces that keep liberatory teaching aflame. Drawing on critical autoethnography and reflective practice, three Black women, two faculty members and one doctoral student …

Learning From Planet Krypton - Building Faculty Efficacy To Remove Barriers To Neurodiverse Student Success, Anna Weisling, Nina F. Weisling

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

There are an increasing number of students with Autism, ADHD, and other neurodiversities attending institutions of higher education. Unfortunately, most higher education faculty do not receive formal training or support around the skills, knowledge, and pedagogy needed to effectively design and implement instruction that removes barriers to accessing the post-secondary curriculum. This was the case for the first author, a content expert with a Ph.D. in Digital Media. She engaged author two, who holds a Ph.D. in Special Education, to discuss ways to more effectively support her neurodiverse college students. What emerged was a duoethnographic research study, followed by thematic …
