The Motivational Bases Of Attitudes To Living North And South Of The Swan River, Darren L. Reynolds
The Motivational Bases Of Attitudes To Living North And South Of The Swan River, Darren L. Reynolds
Theses : Honours
Previous approaches to the study of motivation within the domain of place were found to be disparate, and in need of a firm theoretical framework and appropriate methodology. With the exception of Korpela's (1989) model of place identity, the issues of motivation and operationalization of other theoretical perspectives, (e.g., Proshansky, Fabian, and Kaminoff; 1983) have led to a sparse research base in the area of place. Recent developments in attitude theory ( Herek, 1986; 1987; Zanna & Rempel, 1988) and attitude model development (Hills, 1991) were then applied to the place domain A tripartite model of the motivational bases of …

Needs Of Terminally Ill Cancer Patients In An In-Patient Hospice Unit, Marylynn C. Oldham
Needs Of Terminally Ill Cancer Patients In An In-Patient Hospice Unit, Marylynn C. Oldham
Theses : Honours
In Western Australia, in-patient hospice/palliative care units are caring for increasing numbers of terminally ill cancer patients. Hospice philosophy is based on the belief that the terminally ill patient in individual needs are of paramount importance. The needs of advanced cancer patients have been researched in the home, for patients continuing or having completed curative treatment, and for patients receiving palliative care. However, there is a lack of literature about the needs of terminally ill cancer patients in in-patient hospices. Using a descriptive approach, this study investigated the needs of six terminally ill cancer patients in a 26 bed in-patient …
Differences In Attitude Towards Mathematics Between Successful Regular Class Children And Children With Learning Problems In Mathematics, Jennifer Poller
Differences In Attitude Towards Mathematics Between Successful Regular Class Children And Children With Learning Problems In Mathematics, Jennifer Poller
Theses : Honours
Possible differences in attitude towards mathematics were studied between Year seven successful regular class children and Year seven children with learning problems in mathematics. A comparison was also made between the Year seven children with learning problems and a younger chronological age group (Year 5) who were performing at approximately the same level in mathematics. A sample of 180 students (30 Year 5 males, 30 Year 5 females, 30 Year 7 regular class males, 30 Year 7 regular class females, 30 Year 7 learning problems males and 30 Year 7 learning problems females) was selected from students in seven local …
The Effect Of Assigning Specific Roles In Science Groups On The Gender Behaviour Of Primary School Children, Janet F. Bant
The Effect Of Assigning Specific Roles In Science Groups On The Gender Behaviour Of Primary School Children, Janet F. Bant
Theses : Honours
This thesis reports on an investigation into the effects on gender behaviour of assigning specific roles (Manager, Tracker, Recorder, Communicator) to primary aged members of a cooperative learning group in science. The study was: carried out in a Year 4 and a Year 5 classroom in a Perth primary school. Both classes used a six lesson programme on a physical science topic prepared by the researcher and taught by the classroom teacher. The target subjects were randomly chosen from students meeting certain criteria defined by the researcher. All other subjects were allocated to either single- or mixed-gender groups of four. …
The Uses Of Language In The Portrayal Of Character In Mansfield Park, Anne Chadwick
The Uses Of Language In The Portrayal Of Character In Mansfield Park, Anne Chadwick
Theses : Honours
My study of characterisation in Mansfield Park seeks to advance the field and scope of current literary criticism. Recent developments in narrative criticism have included other fields of study in order to elucidate the assertions and observations proposed by literary studies. The findings of traditional literary criticism will be validated and extended in my examination of Mansfield Park, through the application of linguistic theories. My investigation of characterisation intends to assert the significance of linguistic theories in the study of literature.
Threshold Order And Likert-Style Questionnaires, Barry Sheridan
Threshold Order And Likert-Style Questionnaires, Barry Sheridan
Research outputs pre 2011
Attention to the structure and sequence order of categories for items employing extended category scoring has not received the attention it deserves in the construction of Likert-style questionnaires. The importance of threshold order is emphasised through the presentation of two examples drawn from actual testing situations. When the "neutral", "not sure" or "uncertain" category is incorporated as part of the scoring function the Likert format, threshold disorder results which demonstrates that this structure is not conducive to sound measurement procedures. The second illustration demonstrates how accounting for extremely unlikely responses in a data set, through an examination of threshold order, …
Towards The Measurement Of The Perception Of The Responsibilities Of The Primary School Deputy Principal, Michael James Harvey, Barry Sheridan
Towards The Measurement Of The Perception Of The Responsibilities Of The Primary School Deputy Principal, Michael James Harvey, Barry Sheridan
Research outputs pre 2011
The deputy principalship remains one of the least understood roles in the schools of contemporary education systems. Research which contributes to theory building about the deputy principalship has been hampered by the lack of survey instruments with known psychometric properties. This paper reports an exploratory study which uses latent trait theory to construct a variable which describes and conceptualises practitioner perspectives of the deputy principalship in the self managing school. The logic of constructing the variable is explained in terms of the requirements of the measurement model employed. A sample of 403 deputy principals, 179 principals and 138 teachers in …
Untying The Knot: A Scoialist-Feminist Analysis Of The Social Construction Of Care: Social Research And Development Monograph No. 7, Dani Stehlik
Research outputs pre 2011
As the Australian population ages, policy and human service practice in the field of aged care assumes an increasingly important and relevant position. In this monograph I argue that women who are providing care for aged spouses, parents or relatives in their (or their carer's) own homes, are doing essential, hard and stressful work, work which is unpaid and often unacknowledged, and that the Australian welfare system is now structured around the invisible unpaid labour of such women. The rhetoric of Australian political parties is focussing more and more on the notion of an ideal' family' and 'community' and a …
Clio And The Curriculum: History And The True Professional, Thomas A. O'Donoghue
Clio And The Curriculum: History And The True Professional, Thomas A. O'Donoghue
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
For many years the history of education had a prominent place as a subject in courses for the education and training of teachers. At least three major aspects are discernible in the history programmes in question: the ideas of the ideologues of the subject, the history of institutions nourishing them, and a narrative study of education systems with the focus on Acts and "Great Men". One of the foci in each case was the curriculum. By the late 1960s the subject was so firmly entrenched in courses that Simon (1969: 91) could argue as follows: "There is no need to …
Back To The Future: The De-Professionalisation Of Initial Teacher Education In England And Wales, Peter Gilroy
Back To The Future: The De-Professionalisation Of Initial Teacher Education In England And Wales, Peter Gilroy
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In many ways this paper reads like a report from an educational battlefield. From the 1980s those involved with initial teacher education in England and Wales can be seen as dealing with sporadic sniping at their work, followed by more substantial skirmishes, culminating in the 1990s with fUll-blooded assaults. This paper begins by describing the position being attacked, identifies the first intimations of aggression, then focuses upon the battering inflicted, in the 1990s upon initial teacher education. The analysis which follows indicates that, savage though it has been, the attack on initial teacher education is in some ways only a …
School-Based Teacher Education In The United States : An Uneven Evolution, Mary K. Ducharme, Edward R. Ducharme
School-Based Teacher Education In The United States : An Uneven Evolution, Mary K. Ducharme, Edward R. Ducharme
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
What does school-based teacher education mean in the United States? Certainly, it does not mean that funding, decision-making and management of programs are the province of individual school districts; in the United States, teacher education is firmly ensconced in higher education. The overwhelming majority of teachers are prepared in colleges and universities, licensed by individual states, and employed by local school districts. Law, tradition, and funding suggest that this general pattern will not change soon. While teacher education is located primarily in higher education institutions, school-based teacher education exists. It exists in many forms, ranging from student teaching and other …
Partners In Teacher Education : A Programme In Alberta, Glenda Campbell-Evans
Partners In Teacher Education : A Programme In Alberta, Glenda Campbell-Evans
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
A persistent quest for improvement and change seems to be characteristic of Western education. New ways of thinking, doing and knowing occupy the time and energy of educators at all levels. Educators concerned with the pre service education of teachers plan and deliver programmes which vary from institution to institution. In Canada, some teacher education courses are school-based, some are traditional, some are developed from a school-university partnership model and some follow a discipline based degree. This article presents a descriptive account of the Teaching Partnership programme; a school based teacher education initiative implemented in September 1993 in Alberta, Canada. …
Preservice Intern Teaching : A P-12 Approach In The University Of Melbourne Bachelor Of Teaching Degree For Graduates, Jocelyn Grant
Preservice Intern Teaching : A P-12 Approach In The University Of Melbourne Bachelor Of Teaching Degree For Graduates, Jocelyn Grant
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The report of the consultancy on future directions of the Institute of Education at the University of Melbourne (September 1992) recommended the replacement of concurrent undergraduate courses with a two year course in education for graduates in which the student spends an extensive period in schools. However, forms of school based teacher education had been practised for twenty years. This commitment to the role of schools in teacher education in the Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Bachelor of Education (Primary) courses was a major factor in the development of the Bachelor of Teaching degree which will be …

Satisfaction With Life And Satisfaction With Community: Social Research And Development Report No. 41, Noel Howieson
Research outputs pre 2011
This report describes some investigations carried out by staff and students at Edith Cowan University over the four years from 1989-1992 in the Shire of Wanneroo following the 1987 proposal by the State Planning Commission to change the zoning of a large tract of land in Wanneroo from rural and semirural to urban. The research team first carried out a profiling exercise in the area involving over 800 residents and conducted interviews to ascertain resident wishes with regard to the zoning classification. This exercise identified those who stood to gain and those who stood to lose by the proposal and …
Regulating School Discipline Problems: An Evaluation Of The Carnarvon Primary School Discipline Policy: Final Research Report, Paul Omaji
Research outputs pre 2011
Schools in Australia and their surrounding communities have become gravely concerned about student behaviour problems. It is now commonly perceived that the violent component of this behaviour is on the increase. In one study, Omaji (1992a) showed that it is unwise for governments not to pay constructive attention to such perception and, also, that research and schools themselves have a critical role to play in dealing with student violence. In another study Omaji (1993) showed that options that schools have for managing or preventing the discipline problems or violence range from discipline policy, through pastoral counselling to the development of …
The Effect Of 'Environmental Manipulation' On Agitation And 24-Hour Sleep In Dementia Sufferers In An Institutional Setting, Ernest A. Matthews
The Effect Of 'Environmental Manipulation' On Agitation And 24-Hour Sleep In Dementia Sufferers In An Institutional Setting, Ernest A. Matthews
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Living in an institutional setting places on residents certain constraints in relation to freedom of choice as to when, where, and how they conduct activities of daily living, such as, sleeping eating, attending to hygiene needs. Studies indicate this loss of control over the environment contributes to loss of self-esteem, leads to stress, and at times precipitates agitation among nursing home residents. Cognitive impairment may render dementia sufferers more vulnerable to loss of control over their control over their environment and result in agitation, which may in turn influence sleep. The study therefore, investigated if ‘environmental manipulation’ as in introducing …
Preoperative Predictors Of Postoperative Pain, Robyn A. Paterson
Preoperative Predictors Of Postoperative Pain, Robyn A. Paterson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to investigate five factors, which have been identified in the literature as having influence on the experience of postoperative pain. (1) Patient satisfaction with preoperative information, (2) Anticipated postoperative pain, (3) General self-efficacy, (4) Age, (5) Gender. These variables were examined to determine their relationship, if any with postoperative pain. Any relationship between these variables was also examined. Review of the literature revealed considerable research on pain, and that much of that research has been directed at the treatment of, rather than prediction of postoperative pain. Also, these studies have focused on patients who …
Place-Identity And Homelessness : The Restorative Nature Of The Home, Marie Sadkowski
Place-Identity And Homelessness : The Restorative Nature Of The Home, Marie Sadkowski
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research aims to address deficiencies in the Place-Identity literature and establish whether the home is a central and mediating environment within this theory. An exploration of the association between homelessness and Place-Identity provides a vehicle for clarifying the psychological role of the home and in doing so an increased awareness of this social problem is promoted. Korpela's (1989) and Kaplan's (1983) theories on place, accentuating active self-regulatory mechanisms and restorative environments, act as a catalyst and provide a solid foundation for this current research. The extensive literature on the home highlights the different conceptions that abound and the lack …
An Investigation Into Some Of The Factors Having A Bearing On Interviewer Bias In The Western Australian Market Research Industry, Daniel N. Edwards
An Investigation Into Some Of The Factors Having A Bearing On Interviewer Bias In The Western Australian Market Research Industry, Daniel N. Edwards
Theses : Honours
The market research industry, like most industries operating in a highly competitive environment, is faced with a myriad of challenges. One of the foremost challenges is to deliver sound recommendations to clientele based on quality data on the market. One factor having a bearing on data quality is the problem of interviewer bias; interviewers introducing their own source of error into the survey. This dissertation uses a mass-administered, selfreport technique in a study of the interviewing staff of four Western Australian market research firms in an attempt to investigate the factors that constitute interviewer bias. The three broad areas of …
Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.
Health Care Beliefs Of Elderly Vietnamese Refugees, Gayle Watson
Health Care Beliefs Of Elderly Vietnamese Refugees, Gayle Watson
Theses : Honours
Since 1975, a large number of Vietnamese refugees have settled in Australia. They can be recognised as a distinct cultural group within our society. However, little research has focused upon the health practices and beliefs of these people. This is a study of elderly Vietnamese refugees who have previously been identified as maintaining a great adherence to traditional values and behaviours. The aim of the research is to describe the health practices and beliefs of elderly Vietnamese refugees. As a mini ethno-nursing study, this research sought qualitative data, guided by the Health Belief Model adapted to accommodate cultural perspectives. With …
Ratbags On The Fringe: Exploring Feminism Through Crime, Danielle Brown
Ratbags On The Fringe: Exploring Feminism Through Crime, Danielle Brown
Theses : Honours
This dissertation considers how feminist crime fiction, can transform a traditionally male dominated genre. Contemporary feminist crime writers reject the codified masculine crime genre to create ever-expanding spaces for literary representation. I concentrate on three texts which are ordered as a progression. Firstly, I explore the conservative "male." writing of Jennifer Rowe in The Makeover Murders. I then go on to The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender by Marele Day which privileges a concern with the socio-political position of women and their access to socio-political power. The last text, Finola Moorhead's Still Murder, is a radical work of feminist …
Student Misconceptions Of Osmosis And Diffusion, Erica J. Mcknight
Student Misconceptions Of Osmosis And Diffusion, Erica J. Mcknight
Theses : Honours
Student misconceptions about two fundamental science concepts, osmosis and diffusion, were elicited using an interview-about-events approach. A concept map and list of 25 propositional statements were used to define the knowledge regarded as important for a sound understanding of the concepts of osmosis and diffusion. The interview probed students’ understandings of the propositions. Eighteen students from a local metropolitan high school were interviewed. These students were selected from four different science classes. Nine students studied Year 12 Biology and nine studied Year 12 Human Biology. Diffusion and osmosis are integral concepts required for thorough understanding of both subjects. The interview-about-events …
An Analysis Of Errors Made Both On Computer Administered Tests And Paper And Pencil Tests And A Comparison Between Them, Gary Fullarton
An Analysis Of Errors Made Both On Computer Administered Tests And Paper And Pencil Tests And A Comparison Between Them, Gary Fullarton
Theses : Honours
Sound assessment is essential in mathematics education. Computer Administered Testing is one measuring device being researched for the assessment of mathematics. A concern with the advent of Computer Administered Testing is the possibility that the mode of testing influences how students perform on tests (Bugbee & Bernt 1990; Ring 1993). This study applied Newman Error Analysis Interviews to investigate if first year Bachelor of Arts Primary Education students exhibit different error patterns for mathematics test items in a Computer Administered System compared with those in an equivalent Paper and Pencil Test. The implementation of the Computer Administered Test did not …
Student Preferences Towards Law Becoming A Tertiary Entrance Score Subject, Penelope Preen
Student Preferences Towards Law Becoming A Tertiary Entrance Score Subject, Penelope Preen
Theses : Honours
In Western Australian schools, student subject selection during Year 10 determines the future career path to which students aspire. Subjects offered in Year 11 and Year 12 Upper School studies are classified as Tertiary Entrance score Subjects or certificate of Secondary Education subjects, and students are given the opportunity to select six subjects which may comprise all Tertiary Entrance score Subjects, all Certificate of Secondary Education Subjects, or a combination of both. Law is classified as a Certificate of Secondary Education subject. It is the student's intention to study Law that is the focus of this research project. The major …
Word Reading Strategies: A Replication And Follow Up Intervention, Andrew Davoll
Word Reading Strategies: A Replication And Follow Up Intervention, Andrew Davoll
Theses : Honours
The first stage of this study involved a replication of the cluster analysts procedures used by Freebody and Byrne (1988) to classify Year 2 readers according to their word reading strategies based on lists of irregular and pseudowords. A four-cluster-solution produced three groups similar to those reported by Freebody and Byrne (1988), and a fourth group which could not be classified using their criteria. A three-cluster-solution produced a more parsimonious interpretation, with these groups meeting the criteria for "LB" (low on both Irregular and pseudowords), "HB" (high on both), and "Phoenician" readers (average or above on pseudoword, low on irregular …
Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Knowledge In Women With Gestational Diabetes, Caron Mclarty
Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Knowledge In Women With Gestational Diabetes, Caron Mclarty
Theses : Honours
Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a significantly increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus in later life. A lifestyle which includes healthy eating habits, weight control, regular exercise, and stress management has been associated with preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications. To care for themselves women require educati9n about and knowledge of strategies that have been associated with preventing diabetes. An essential part of education is knowledge assessment Women with GDM have been largely overlooked in the development of instruments to measure knowledge of diabetes. Orem's general theory of nursing …
Attitudes Of Girls And Boys Towards Compulsory Physical Education In A Selected Government Secondary School, Mileva Pirot
Attitudes Of Girls And Boys Towards Compulsory Physical Education In A Selected Government Secondary School, Mileva Pirot
Theses : Honours
This study investigated the attitudes of 175 lower secondary school students towards compulsory physical education and how these attitudes differed by year level and sex. The students were selected from a metropolitan government secondary school. A modified version of the Wear Attitude Inventory was used as the research instrument. A two-way ANOVA was applied to analyse the data for the following sub-groups: Year 8 females, Year 8 males, Year 9 females, Year 9 males, Year 10 females, and Year 10 males. The ANOVA compared the mean scores on the Wear Attitude Inventory for each sub-group. The results indicated that although …
