Narrative Of The Wild: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Protected Areas Within The United States Of America, Isaac S. Reimer Jan 2020

Narrative Of The Wild: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Protected Areas Within The United States Of America, Isaac S. Reimer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As conditions for the global environment continue to degrade and the climate crisis deepens, wilderness and protected areas (PAs) serve as a bulwark for sustainability goals. As much of the protections and strengths of PAs stem from the public’s opinion of them, this research seeks to further understand the communicative underpinnings of PAs. Utilizing autoethnography and applying it to a rhetorical framework, this study explores the constitutive qualities narrative in conjunction with the wilderness can possess. The results offer suggestions for future communication scholars and advocates to employ while discussing and communicating about the wilderness.

Old And Deer: A Study Of Neoarchean Peridotites In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Rachel Merz Jan 2020

Old And Deer: A Study Of Neoarchean Peridotites In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Rachel Merz

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Deer Lake Peridotite and the Presque Isle Periodotite are two ultramafic formations of Neoarchean age within the Ishpeming Greenstone Belt of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and are found only fifteen miles apart. The Deer Lake Peridotite was deformed in processes indicative of the broader, regional-scale tectonics of the region, but little study has been done on the mineralogy and extent and style of alteration. This research aims to better classify the mineralogy of the formation, with particular focus on textural variations observed in thin-section, as well as chemical analysis of samples taken from the formation. In addition, this research seeks …

The Impact Of A Candidates [Sic] Race On Voter Opinion, Yssis Patterson Jan 2020

The Impact Of A Candidates [Sic] Race On Voter Opinion, Yssis Patterson

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

INTRODUCTION: Race has always played a significant role in politics. Identifying what degree race and/or political party identification has will help to further determine and explain the outsized significance of these factors in modern American politics.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that a candidate's race would have a significant impact on the way that a voter votes. Based on a candidate’s initial appearance and biographer, a voter may prefer one candidate over another simply based on an isolated variable.

METHODS: For this study, we conducted two surveys through Amazon M Turk. We asked a series of questions based on two candidates of …

Separate But Equal? A Look At Michigan Public School Districts, Travis Michalak Jan 2019

Separate But Equal? A Look At Michigan Public School Districts, Travis Michalak

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that schools that are separate are inherently unequal and that the desegregation of schools should take effect with “all deliberate speed.” Decades later, there are still schools whose student bodies are comprised of over 90% minority students. The following study aimed to understand the relationship between minority segregated schools and their graduation rates, as well as the relationship between student poverty rates and the racial composition of schools and the resulting effect these variables have on school funding. Using data collected from the Michigan School database, this study …

Para Los Hijos Y Nuestro Futuro: Reconceptualizing Costa Rican Identity Through The Civil War, Amberlyn Britt Jan 2019

Para Los Hijos Y Nuestro Futuro: Reconceptualizing Costa Rican Identity Through The Civil War, Amberlyn Britt

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

After the 1948 Civil War, Costa Rican people redefined their society and democracy, and created a nation that, unlike many others in the region, was able to withstand pressures toward corruption and violence. By examining personal narratives, this study observes how various groups such as Costa Rican men, women, and Afro-West Indians related to the nation‟s traditions of democracy and its identity of exceptionalism. In 1948, Costa Ricans fought against a government that they viewed as corrupt and oppressive to secure a better future for not only themselves, but for all of Costa Rica.

The European And American Immigration Struggle: How Two Continents Endeavor To Solve The Immigration Question, Austin Creal

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Both the European Union and the United States experienced an immigration crisis in the Early 2000's. Each has reacted with policies and judicial opinions based on their culture, circumstances, and geography. I conduct a comparative policy-based analysis with a multi-faced lens that will be analyzed with emphasis on the consequences of immigration and how each judicial system endeavors to solve the most pressing challenge of their times. Specifically, I compare various case law, directives, and precedent to provide a more in-depth narrative on how each system has reacted to circumstances before their respective Courts. An in-depth examination of both EU …

The Relationship Between Maltreatment And Self-Regulation Trajectories: A Multimethod Approach, Grayson Sturgis Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Maltreatment And Self-Regulation Trajectories: A Multimethod Approach, Grayson Sturgis

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Typically, the ability of individuals to regulate their behaviors and emotions improves over time. However, prior research has not examined possible heterogeneity in self-regulation skills from birth to age 16. This study examined trajectories of self-regulation using growth mixture modeling and tested the relationship between child maltreatment (i.e., number of maltreatment allegations) and trajectory group membership, growth parameters, and group formation. Subjects (N = 1354) were drawn from the Consortium for Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). Tests of unconditional models (i.e., those without covariates) with 1-5 classes supported a 4-class solution (consistently good, consistently poor, improving, …

Interviews were conducted to expose women’s attitudes, opinions, choices, …

Charles Horton Cooley And The Social Gospel Influence, Taylor Emerson Styes Jan 2019

Charles Horton Cooley And The Social Gospel Influence, Taylor Emerson Styes

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Charles Horton Cooley was one of the fundamental American intellectuals of the early twentieth century, primarily due to his social theories that involved the connection between individuals and society. This thesis demonstrates this connection with the influence of the Social Gospel movement as a basis for Cooley’s evolving social organization theories that remained important for the next generation of sociologists. The last stage of this thesis examines the transition away from the Social Gospel influence through Cooley’s organic social process, while Cooley retained parallels with the Social Gospel.

Debunking The False Dichotomy: Developing And Applying Trans Quantcrit At The Intersection Of Trans/Non-Binary Identities And Religious, Secular, And Spiritual Engagement In College, Kate Curley Jan 2019

Debunking The False Dichotomy: Developing And Applying Trans Quantcrit At The Intersection Of Trans/Non-Binary Identities And Religious, Secular, And Spiritual Engagement In College, Kate Curley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Discrimination towards people who identify as trans/non-binary (NB) is still extremely well documented and pervasive across many different demographics. Discussions on religious, secular, or spiritual (RSS) identities and trans/NB identities are often fraught with difficult conflicts between the two. In student affairs published standards, practitioners are expected to serve “regardless” of gender in RSS programs and “regardless” of religion in LGBTQ+ programming. This study sought to explore how RSS campus climate influences students’ attitudes towards trans/NB people and how trans/NB experience their RSS campus climate. Informed by critical theory and using critical consciousness and ally identity development conceptual frameworks, I …
