Identifying Nutrient Dynamics And Relative Groundwater Contribution In Wetlands At Fish Lake Environmental Center, Lapeer Mi, Rose Allen Jan 2024

Identifying Nutrient Dynamics And Relative Groundwater Contribution In Wetlands At Fish Lake Environmental Center, Lapeer Mi, Rose Allen

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Wetlands are complex ecosystems that are dependent on hydrologic processes and water chemistry. Understanding the role that water chemistry and nutrients play in wetland ecosystems is crucial to wetland management and restoration. The Fish Lake Environmental Education Center near Lapeer Michigan, is glacially influenced, and contains a large bog. Between the bog and lake there are multiple kettles that contain ephemeral wetlands in the spring. Bogs are primarily precipitation sourced, whereas the kettle wetlands may be a combination of precipitation and groundwater sourced. Previous studies indicated that groundwater flow direction is towards Fish Lake, but it was unclear to what …

A Marketing Analysis Of Mid-American Conference Universities, Charles Donald Borus Jan 2024

A Marketing Analysis Of Mid-American Conference Universities, Charles Donald Borus

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Across the country, millions of high school seniors make the decision on where to attend college, basing these decisions on a variety of factors. For a high school student living in the Midwestern United States, they are starved for choice. Larger universities in this region come with an established reputation of academic prowess. Smaller institutions such as those that are a part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) offer all the same experiences-just with a smaller student population. With competition from larger universities in the area, how can universities in the MAC attract and retain students? How can this information be …

Modernizing The Arab American National Museum: Enhancing Cultural Representation And Community Engagement, Mariam Ktiri Oct 2023

Modernizing The Arab American National Museum: Enhancing Cultural Representation And Community Engagement, Mariam Ktiri

Historic Preservation Final Projects

With a global Arab population of 646 million and 3.7 million Arabs in the United States, the presence of only one Arab-American-focused museum is a matter of concern. The Arab American National Museum (AANM) in Dearborn, Michigan, was established in 2005 in response to post-9/11 discrimination, violent racism, and xenophobia. AANM became a pivotal touchstone for connecting communities to pan-Arab American culture. While its permanent exhibits span the historical narrative of Arab Americans, they remain outdated, especially in the face of ongoing issues such as the Liberation of Palestine movement. This essay analyzes the AANM’s role as a cultural bridge-builder, …

Comparison Of Water Column Properties Derived From An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle And Satellite Based Sources In Lake Michigan, David Bennion

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are an emerging technology increasingly being employed in geoscience and ecosystem research in the Great Lakes, capitalizing on their ability to sample large areas fitted with a variety of sensors. Previous to AUV use, chlorophyll measurements were either collected at discrete locations accessed by boats or derived from satellite remote sensing data. An advantage of AUVs is the ability to detect the presence of subsurface formations such as a deep chlorophyll layer or directly measure features such as the extent of the photic zone, which provides the opportunity to compare these in situ measured features to …

Effect Of State Covid-19 Policies On Post-Pandemic Employment, Jason Lawless Jan 2023

Effect Of State Covid-19 Policies On Post-Pandemic Employment, Jason Lawless

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent shutdowns pushed many out of their jobs. In the US, there was a wide variety of economic and health system support provided by the states. Using data from Oxford University’s COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, this study attempts to find a relationship between the amount of financial support received by workers and current employment, hypothesizing that states that provided greater income and debt relief are now seeing less employment. This paper uses two different dependent variables, total employment, and restaurant employment. While controlling for population demographics and political leanings, we find that the effect of …

Comparison Of Mediterranean Diet Adherence Across Scoring Systems In U.S. Adults, Meghan Pendleton Jan 2023

Comparison Of Mediterranean Diet Adherence Across Scoring Systems In U.S. Adults, Meghan Pendleton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by high intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, and seafood; moderate intake of dairy, lean proteins, and alcohol; and low intake of red meat and sweets. This pattern consistently correlates with health benefits in epidemiological research, which uses numerous scoring systems to measure diet adherence. No withinpopulation system comparisons have been conducted in the U.S. to understand how differences in system constructs may impact adherence measurement. This study used food intake data from a U.S. sample of 72 older adults to calculate scores with the Alternative Mediterranean Diet Scale, Mediterranean Diet Scale, Pyramid-Based Mediterranean …

Urban/Rural Differences In Food Security In America’S East North Central Region, Eva Marie Long Jan 2023

Urban/Rural Differences In Food Security In America’S East North Central Region, Eva Marie Long

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The literature on food insecurity in America is extensive, but there is still a lack of understanding of urban/rural differences. Food insecure populations in urban communities undoubtedly experience different and unique challenges to food access than food insecure populations in rural areas. While urban households may face a lack of options for fresh produce, rural households may find that they live an inaccessible distance from the nearest grocer. Through analysis of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey and Food Security Supplement, this project seeks to discover common, underlying variables in food-insecure communities in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas in America’s East …

"Who Were They?": Interpreting The Lives Of Victorian Servants In The Ford-Macnichol Home, Audrey Wicklander

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The Ford-MacNichol Home in Wyandotte, Michigan is a public historic house museum which interprets and exhibits the lives of the lavish Ford-MacNichol family who lived there from 1896 to 1903. Since 1977, the museum has been detailing the lives of the rich and powerful and my question for some time has been: what about ‘the help?’ Domestic employees were needed to make powerful Victorian households’ function properly and visitors and volunteers have expressed interest in knowing more about the house’s servants. In this project, I will be writing an addition to the interpretive manual which will discuss the daily tasks …
