Understanding And Teaching Variations Of Every-Day Business Language And Behavior In German-Speaking Countries, Margrit V. Zinggeler Oct 2013

Understanding And Teaching Variations Of Every-Day Business Language And Behavior In German-Speaking Countries, Margrit V. Zinggeler

Global Advances in Business Communication

Conventions of informal versus formal language patterns and behaviors in business settings have changed in the various German-speaking countries over the last decades resulting from American modes of interpersonal communication and BELF (Gerritsen and Nickerson 2008), yet current textbooks for Business German and Communication do not address the trend of more informal language (linguistically different) and the new reality adequately. Data on every-day language usage and behavior in a professional environment in German-speaking countries and regions are presented in this paper. The provisional result of data is the basis for a teaching module and recommendations on how to address and …

Communicating Luxury To An International Audience: The Case Of Scottish Cashmere, Yvonne Mclaren-Hankin Oct 2013

Communicating Luxury To An International Audience: The Case Of Scottish Cashmere, Yvonne Mclaren-Hankin

Global Advances in Business Communication

Scottish cashmere is a luxury product which is sold throughout the world to an international clientele. This article investigates the image of Scottish cashmere that is projected in texts on company websites with a view to establishing how Scottish cashmere companies are promoting themselves to international consumers and what values they are putting forward as inherent to their brands. To date little, if any, research has examined materials used by Scottish textile companies to communicate with consumers about themselves and their products. This study aims to fill that gap, thereby complementing existing work on other industries, including international designer fashion …

Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls Oct 2013

Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The purpose of this project is to update the current tour that is being offered at the Rentschler Farm Museum. It can be all too easy to focus only on the “stuff” or artifacts that are inside a museum. Tours about “stuff” are not relatable, and typically not very interesting. This tour focuses instead on how artifacts may have been used, and on particular stories about the Rentschler family who poured their lives into their farmland. The new tour was also written in a way that is relatable to visitors of the museum. The greatest example being that to the …

The Relationship Between The Perceived Level Of Contribution Of Virtual Team Members And Their Energization Source As Described By Jung's Typology, Edward Carl Bartone Apr 2013

The Relationship Between The Perceived Level Of Contribution Of Virtual Team Members And Their Energization Source As Described By Jung's Typology, Edward Carl Bartone

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The increasing use of virtual teams as a result of advances in technology has altered the manner in which team members communicate and interact (Holton, 2001). The media-rich faceto- face team environment has frequently given way to asynchronous communication, using tools such as emails and discussion threads (Ohler, 2004). This study focused on the role of personality type in the emerging academic asynchronous environment; specifically, it explored the relationship between the Jungian dimension of energization (introversion vs. extroversion) of a team member and the perceived level of contribution of that team member to a team in an academic asynchronous virtual …

Understanding Lactation Consultants' Evaluation Of Oral Mechanism Function And Dysphagia In Nursing Neonates, Elizabeth Louise Howard Mar 2013

Understanding Lactation Consultants' Evaluation Of Oral Mechanism Function And Dysphagia In Nursing Neonates, Elizabeth Louise Howard

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Infants with dysphagia are at increased risk for poor health and nutritional outcomes (Arvedson, 2008) if improperly diagnosed or managed. Communication between multidisciplinary team members is imperative for transition from screening to intervention. An overlap in scope of practice may exist between lactation consultants (LCs) and speech-language pathologists (SLPs). In order to facilitate multidisciplinary understanding and communication, this study was designed to understand how LCs evaluate oral mechanism function and dysphagia in breastfeeding neonates as well as their understanding of the role of SLPs in the management of dysphagia in neonates through a comparative multi-case, summative qualitative study. Participants described …

The Tilt Of The Boron Triangle In Tourmaline, Charles J. Badgerow Jan 2013

The Tilt Of The Boron Triangle In Tourmaline, Charles J. Badgerow

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The tourmaline mineral group has a highly complex chemical composition and provides a wealth of information on Earth's processes. Past research has revealed numerous mysteries regarding the structure of the boron triangle within tourmaline, especially as it bonds to the Z- and Z'- cation sites. Although the Z- and Z' - are nominally the same site, the Z'-site has a greater effect on the stereochemistry of the boron triangle. Further, the Z' -site has a shorter bond-length with the boron triangle than the Z-site. We hypothesize that this variation affects the stereochemistry of the boron triangle, and have analyzed a …

Practicing What We Teach: The Politics Behind Creating A State Social Studies Curriculum, Jacquelyn Visger Jan 2013

Practicing What We Teach: The Politics Behind Creating A State Social Studies Curriculum, Jacquelyn Visger

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Societal importance of the social studies fields is the key to what makes the development of social studies curriculum political. State standardized curricula adopted in the 1990s gave freedom to individual states to create their own standards on what information they were requiring their students to learn. The standards we require students to know inherently molds their political philosophy throughout schooling. By focusing attention on two separate cases, Texas and Michigan, inherent differences in the creation process of these standards are highlighted to show how the differences in the creation process have an effect on the standards document. This thesis …

Geddes Town Hall School House, Sarah Marsom Jan 2013

Geddes Town Hall School House, Sarah Marsom

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The Geddes Town Hall School House located on Eastern Michigan University's campus is representative of the rural education, locally and nationally. Since the Geddes Town Hall School House was moved to Eastern Michigan University, it has been used intermittently by professor's to host classes and to teach children about the history of schools. By creating brochures and an activity booklet about the Geddes Town Hall School House, interested individuals can learn about both the history of the structure and one-room school houses in general. Currently, the only passive interpretation of the Geddes Town Hall School House are the following: the …

Better Social Studies: Increasing Content Knowledge & Reading Simultaneously, Ellen Rae Weaver Jan 2013

Better Social Studies: Increasing Content Knowledge & Reading Simultaneously, Ellen Rae Weaver

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

When considering the impact of the new set of educational standards coming into effect across the nation, commonly known as The Common Core, it becomes necessary to reevaluate the emphases given to the different subject areas being taught. These new standards are heavily steeped in the empowering act of reading in education. I believe that reading, instead of overwhelming content with its different instructional needs, can instead be used to rejuvenate subject areas. Since the content area dubbed social studies is a diverse and greatly varied teaching subject it has a multitude of applications in education.; yet, due to the …
