An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Michigan Department Of Education School Achievement Rankings And School's Percentage Of Economically Disadvantaged Students, Nicholas E. Ceglarek
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Michigan Department Of Education School Achievement Rankings And School's Percentage Of Economically Disadvantaged Students, Nicholas E. Ceglarek
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to compare the Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE) school ranking system, the Top to Bottom Ranking, to the school’s percentage of economically disadvantaged students as measured by the percentage of free and reduced-price lunch. In addition, finding that a correlation exists, the study sought to identify an alternate method of reporting school effectiveness, taking into consideration the school’s percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Utilizing the current Top to Bottom Ranking system, the Michigan Department of Education assigns an array of requirements, sanctions, and rewards, depending on where a school building ranks. This ranking …

From Climate Action To Coalition: Ypsilanti And Emu As Models For Sustainability, Erica Mooney
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Inspired by leading EMU's engagement with Ypsilanti's climate Action Plan in 2011, a journey began to discovering ways to cultivate healthy relationships through sustainability. How have other universities addressed climate change? How have other municipalities work with schools addressing sustainability? I explored national programs as well as a thorough review of Michigan's other public universitites. This thesis is a mix of best practices research and a proposal to both city and school administrators and stakeholders. Reviewing what other campuses and towns have done to address environmental and social justice, and the complex realms of economic and community development, a coalition …

Special Education In Michigan: Are Juveniles In Detention Being Properly Served?, Leah Miller
Brehm Scholars Research
This study is an investigation into the staff at Michigan juvenile detention facilities regarding awareness of and compliance with state and federal laws which involve the process for screening those suspected of having a disability, the programs and services offered to students with special needs, and larger issues that may be hindering progress in these areas. Directors and assistant directors of all of the detention facilities in the state of Michigan were sent an online survey, with the request that it be forwarded to all staff as well. Questions included those seeking basic demographic data, services available, staff qualifications, barriers …

The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski
The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In the Victorian era, the first wave of feminism surfaced in several influential family novels that modeled the "New Woman" instead of reinstating the "Old Girl." Characters from the novels Little Women, Villette, Jane Eyre, and The Little Lychetts as they modernize the Victorian women in the fin de siecle. Now we see a trend similar to first wave feminism beginning to happen with biology, The Hunger Games and Will Grayson, Will Grayson show examples of how a "New Man" is defined in contemporary society.
Experiential Education: Understanding The Impact Of Remotely Operated Vehicles On At-Risk Student Learning, James E. Kelly
Experiential Education: Understanding The Impact Of Remotely Operated Vehicles On At-Risk Student Learning, James E. Kelly
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
How do educators engage students in the curriculum? State and Common Core Standards determine what to teach; how those standards are taught varies. This research examined a group of at-risk elementary and secondary students using underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) as part of an experiential education program in a rural Michigan school district. With a foundation of grounded theory, qualitative methods are used in this case study of the experience of at-risk learners whose mission is to solve a problem. In particular, the story evolves from nine emergent themes identified in the experiences of students and adults: attendance, communication, confidence, …

The Environment Of Poverty And The Limits Of Girlhood: The Struggle For The Right To An Education In North India. Gareebi Ka Mahual Aur Ladkeo Ki Hud, Imandeep Kaur Grewal
The Environment Of Poverty And The Limits Of Girlhood: The Struggle For The Right To An Education In North India. Gareebi Ka Mahual Aur Ladkeo Ki Hud, Imandeep Kaur Grewal
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation explored the lived worlds and educational experiences of adolescent girls living in poverty in North India. Class, caste, gender, and regionally-based inequalities result in striking disparities leading to restricted, gendered opportunities and individual freedoms. The purpose of this ethnographic study was an in-depth exploration of the lives of 20 girls living in poverty, and how their own educational futures were impacted by educational policy and practices. Illustrative case studies were used to explore the broader question of educational access. In keeping with Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the primary focus …
