Analysis On The Utilization Of Co-Design Practices For Developing Consumer-Oriented Public Service And Policy Focusing On The Comparison With Western Countries And South Korea, Yoori Koo, Hyeonseo Ahn

ServDes Conference Series

Service design methods have recently been applied to the areas of public services and policies development reflecting the needs of consumers. However, domestically, due to the lack of understanding of service design among many policy makers, service design is utilized as a piecemeal approach in practice. In that regard, this paper analyzes six cases using service design methodology in public service and policy development in Western countries and South Korea. The data relevant to each case was collected from desk-based secondary data and in-depth interviews. The analysis was focused on the use of co-design tools in each step of a …

In this paper, we present an action-research process within an Horizon 2020 project conducted through a co-design approach with the SME Zehus. In order to define a new model of free-floating bike sharing service to be implemented in the city of Milan, co-design activities were conducted with different project stakeholders and structured in the form of an explorative workshop, creative sessions, and user tests. This approach allowed envisioning and validating solutions, sharing competencies, and make decisions through collaboration in a iterative process. The adoption of co-design had relevant influence on the design of the final solution, going beyond the users’ …

Designing Tangible Tools To Support Collaboration In The Co-Design Of Healthcare Services, Karianne Rygh Jun 2018

Designing Tangible Tools To Support Collaboration In The Co-Design Of Healthcare Services, Karianne Rygh

ServDes Conference Series

As the challenges facing the Norwegian healthcare system are growing in scale and complexity, cross-disciplinary collaboration is needed between public and private sectors to rethink how we design services for care. Service design has emerged as a fruitful area of design practice and research that can support cross-disciplinary collaboration. It may do so by providing effective co-design communication tools that bridge the evidence-based culture of the medical world with working cultures, perspectives and languages of other fields. Despite the documented use of such tools, few examples in the literature describe the actual design process of developing three-dimensional communication tools and …

About Evaluation In Service Design: As It Is And How It Could Evolve, Francesca Foglieni, Beatrice Villari, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser

ServDes Conference Series

This paper reports on the role of evaluation in the service design field, reflecting in particular on contributions presented at the ServDes Conference 2018 in Milan, where the topic is explicitly introduced for the first time as a promising research and practical argument, to push the boundaries of the discipline and reinforce its legitimacy as a driver of innovation. It starts with a brief overview of literature on the topic, which highlights an increasing attention on measuring the value of service design and its impact on organizations, and goes on to examine some preliminary contributions on the evaluation of services …

Explicating Stakeholder Criteria: Opening Up The Power Field Through Design Games, Sune Gudiksen, Kirstine Christensen, Joakim Glerup Aalborg, Klaus Greve Jun 2017

Explicating Stakeholder Criteria: Opening Up The Power Field Through Design Games, Sune Gudiksen, Kirstine Christensen, Joakim Glerup Aalborg, Klaus Greve

Nordes Conference Series

Participatory design games involve both users and, later, stakeholders in the development process. Research has shown that such games have documented benefits, such as mutual learning, shared communication and joint propositions for sets of alternative scenarios and future practices. However, as the complexity of participatory design projects increases (e.g. due to a widening circle of include stakeholders), it becomes harder to keep track of the various stakeholders’ diverse criteria. Recent design research has shown that criteria of importance to stakeholders—and, subsequently, their ownership—is a first step towards infrastructuring as a key factor in bringing about organizational change. For this reason, …

Exploring Power With Object Theatre, Merja Ryöppy, Eva Knutz, Salu Ylirisku Jun 2017

Exploring Power With Object Theatre, Merja Ryöppy, Eva Knutz, Salu Ylirisku

Nordes Conference Series

This paper explores Object Theatre as an approach to address power in design. We understand power as a relational activity that emerges and is upheld through particular ways of relating (Elias 1991; Stacey 2007). The spontaneity in participant actions through Object Theatre exercises renders processes of relating tangible and negotiable. In this study Object Theatre was applied in exploration of a new walking aid for elderly people. We argue that the shift in perspective that Object Theatre allows designers to achieve can be effectively harnessed to explore issues arising from power relating amongst people – and between people and objects.

Whole In One: Designing For Empathy In Complex Systems, Helena Sustar, Tuuli Mattelmäki Jun 2017

Whole In One: Designing For Empathy In Complex Systems, Helena Sustar, Tuuli Mattelmäki

Nordes Conference Series

This paper investigates the role of empathy and the use of service design tools in the context of (governmental) systems and organisational services. The discourse focuses on three areas: intercultural empathy, the empathising process and empathic design tools. The paper first reviews what empathy is and how it has been discussed in design. Secondly, a practical example of a complex design context is presented, an interactive platform for governmental immigration services. To best acknowledge the perspective of one, i.e. an individual in the whole, this example proposes that a combination of different design tools can systematically be applied, to foster …

Bridging Service Design With Integrated Co-Design Decision Maker Interventions, Sune Gudiksen, Anders Christensen, Pernille Henriksen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper we are exploring the relation between participation and fiction with the aim of investigating how fiction can be a resource for participatory design and can shed more light on the participatory value of fiction. We describe how fiction has been taken up and conceptualized in contemporary design research and argue that different strategies for applying fiction may be seen as a resource for evoking various forms of participation. Furthermore this paper present three case examples of participatory prototyping, that makes use of play or games as a way to engage participants with a particular use of make-believe. …

An Exploration Of Service Design Jam And Its Ability To Foster Social Enterprise, Ksenija Kuzmina, Chris Parker, Gyuchan Thomas Jun, Martin Maguire, Val Mitchell, Mariale Moreno, Samantha Porter Jun 2016

An Exploration Of Service Design Jam And Its Ability To Foster Social Enterprise, Ksenija Kuzmina, Chris Parker, Gyuchan Thomas Jun, Martin Maguire, Val Mitchell, Mariale Moreno, Samantha Porter

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Social enterprises (SE) are valued as innovative solutions to complex problems but require conditions to nurture and support them. Most support systems rely on individuals who already have an SE idea, and there is very little research on understanding what conditions can support to cultivate the willingness and motivation to engage individuals in this activity. An exploratory study was led to understand whether a particular event, Service Design Jam, can provide such conditions. The paper introduces the study of the Lufbra Jam, organised at Loughborough University, from which two social enterprises, Crop Club in 2013, and FrenPals in 2014 emerged. …

Making Service Design In A Digital Business, Piia Rytilahti, Simo Rontti, Titta Jylkä, Mira Alhonsu, Hanna-Riina Vuontisjärv, Laura Laivamaa

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Digital businesses involve multiple stakeholders, each with their own distinct sets of values. In addition to the business value of the global digital ecosystem, a complex web of socio-cultural human values has emerged from digital development. In this research paper, this ecosystem is examined in a Finnish context, through business-led research and development consortia (Nee d for Speed, N4S). The aim of the paper is to present insights into a more socio-culturally sensitive research framework for a digital service development through three experiments using participatory and co-design tools: a stakeholder mapping tool, a value network mapping tool and a design …

Probing The Future By Anticipative Design Acts, Annelies De Smet, Nel Janssens Jun 2016

Probing The Future By Anticipative Design Acts, Annelies De Smet, Nel Janssens

DRS Biennial Conference Series

We discuss anticipation as a particular type of future focused thinking. Based on our own design and research practices we position the anticipative mode of thinking and acting in relation to design approaches that are oriented towards qualities of becoming and sense-making. We argue that the act of anticipation in a design context holds the aspect of making artefacts that create openings in the fuzzy reality and act as imaginative probing instruments in the complexity of continuously evolving transformation processes as they occur in our research field: the field of urbanity. In this context, we feel that developing tactics of …

Design And The Creation Of Representational Artefacts For Interactive Social Problem Solving, Richard Cooney, Nifeli Stewart, Tania Ivanka, Neal Haslem Jun 2016

Design And The Creation Of Representational Artefacts For Interactive Social Problem Solving, Richard Cooney, Nifeli Stewart, Tania Ivanka, Neal Haslem

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper highlights the role of design and designers in the creation of visual artefacts as boundary objects to be used to facilitate social problem solving. Many problems in human service systems can only be solved by purposive action amongst the stakeholders of the system but each stakeholder has only a partial view of the system. Boundary objects that present a multi-stakeholder perspective can facilitate problem solving by creating representations of the system that are meaningful to all stakeholders. In this study we used sensemaking (often a textual practice) and visualisation to create a high complexity representational artefact to enable …

Exposing Charities To Design-Led Approaches Through Design Research, Laura Warwick, Robert Djaelani Jun 2016

Exposing Charities To Design-Led Approaches Through Design Research, Laura Warwick, Robert Djaelani

This paper discusses the value of using design research to expose Voluntary Community Sector (VCS) organisations to design-led approaches. The discussion is based on the findings from two qualitative, exploratory doctoral inquiries into the relevance and applicability of adopting a Design for Service (DfS) approach to effect transformation in VCS contexts. Using Action Research and a case study structure, the DfS approach was introduced and applied within four VCS organisations in succession. The research findings have provided valuable evidence and insight into design’s capacity to incite transformational change, and the challenges of doing so, at a critical time for the …

Problematizing Evidence-Based Design: A Case Study Of Designing For Services In The Finnish Government, Helena Sustar, Luke Feast Jun 2016

Problematizing Evidence-Based Design: A Case Study Of Designing For Services In The Finnish Government, Helena Sustar, Luke Feast

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The increasing complexity of design problems and degree of innovation required of design solutions today has led many authors to claim that decision making in design should be based on strong scientific evidence. However, current models of evidence-based practice are too simplistic for design since they tend to focus only on evidence strength. We investigate the role of evidence in service design through analysing a case study of creating a service design solution to improve immigration services in the Finnish public sector. By using a conceptual framework that emphasises the impact of different kinds of evidence on knowledge as justified …

Becoming A More User-Centred Organization: A Design Tool To Support Transformation, Lennart Kaland, Christine De Lille Jun 2016

Becoming A More User-Centred Organization: A Design Tool To Support Transformation, Lennart Kaland, Christine De Lille

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper describes how organizations can be supported with design tools through their transformation towards becoming more user-centred. Existing business model tools are starting points and extended through a design perspective, which allows additional flexibility and user-focus within an ongoing continuous change process. In this sense, the tools act as boundary objects facilitating stakeholder collaboration by creating a common understanding, a shared vision and values translated into actionable insights. The designed toolkit was developed using three design iterations and identifies three key levels of activities needed: on the organizational, customer and empathy level. Each level has its own perspective, involvement …

A Multilevel Approach To Research ‘Obscure’ Innovation Processes And Practices, Emmanouil Chatzakis, Neil Smith, Erik Bohemia Jun 2016

A Multilevel Approach To Research ‘Obscure’ Innovation Processes And Practices, Emmanouil Chatzakis, Neil Smith, Erik Bohemia

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper’s aim is to discuss a need for a multilevel research approach to investigate innovation practices in organisations. We argue that this approach overcomes some of the limitations of the single level research methods commonly used investigating innovation performance and success. Specifically, the multilevel research approach allows researchers and subsequently organisations to take into consideration ‘obscured’ practices within innovation processes. First, we put forward a motion that innovation processes permeate the formalised organisational structures and practices. Then, we outline a case where many of the practices associated with innovation are ‘obscured’. This is followed with discussion on how the …

Design Expanding Into Strategy: Evidence From Design Consulting Firm, Suzan Boztepe Jun 2016

Design Expanding Into Strategy: Evidence From Design Consulting Firm, Suzan Boztepe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The purpose of this paper is to examine how design works at the level of strategy. Through analyses of the practices of five design consulting firms in Denmark, it explores how designers become part of strategy formation in the first place, the types of strategic work they undertake, and what design skills and knowledge they utilize in the making of strategy. The findings suggest that designers engage in strategy-level work in multiple domains ranging from redefinition of existing strategies to building unique organizational competencies to setting corporate vision by developing future scenarios.

The Information Designer Through The Lens Of Design For Learning, Eden Potter Jun 2016

The Information Designer Through The Lens Of Design For Learning, Eden Potter

DRS Biennial Conference Series

All effective information design helps people to access, understand, and use information, but not all information design is intended to help people learn. This paper examines instructional design—the activity of creating and developing learning experiences that meet learners’ needs—and places it as a lens through which to identify the key skills and personal attributes that information designers need to succeed in their field.

Efficiently Inefficient: Service Design Games As Innovation Tools, Otso Hannula, J. Tuomas Harviainen May 2016

Efficiently Inefficient: Service Design Games As Innovation Tools, Otso Hannula, J. Tuomas Harviainen

ServDes Conference Series

This paper analyses the effectiveness of service design games (SDGs) based on their ability to trigger participant reflection. The paper draws upon game studies to present how SDGs appear as ineffective innovation tools, and combines it with organizational knowledge creation to show how the “gameness” of SDGs actually drives their effectives. The paper contributes to the understanding of SDGs by offering a theoretical explanation for their effectiveness, and presents a framework for analysing design games as productive dialogues. ATLAS, a board game for service co-design project planning, is presented as an example of embedding reflection into the design of a …

Service Design Ways To Value-In-Use, Mattias Arvola, Stefan Holmlid May 2016

Service Design Ways To Value-In-Use, Mattias Arvola, Stefan Holmlid

ServDes Conference Series

What do we mean if we say that a service design work is an example of good design? This paper presents a provisional typology for the ways in which a service design proposal can contribute to value-in-use. The typology covers instrumentality, technical excellence, usefulness, social significance, mutual advantage, collective welfare, and aesthetic values. Moral implications related to norms, power structures and tensions between stakeholders are also considered. It is argued that the typology can facilitate service designers and researchers in framing and re-framing a design effort and conceptualise a value proposition.

The Role Of Design As A Critical Friend To The Voluntary Community Sector, Laura Warwick, Robert Young May 2016

The Role Of Design As A Critical Friend To The Voluntary Community Sector, Laura Warwick, Robert Young

ServDes Conference Series

This paper presents one of the key findings from a recent Doctoral inquiry into the relevance and applicability of adopting a Design for Service (DfS) approach to effect transformation in Voluntary Community Sector (VCS) contexts. The research used case study method, reflective practice and content analysis to establish that the use of design at a systemic level of a VCS organisation could incite transformational change. The paper reveals that the stakeholders’ initial trust in the designer is more important than their trust in the DfS approach (methods and processes), which becomes crucial to increasing the influence of design in the …

Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis Jun 2015

Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis

Nordes Conference Series

In a quest to improve our design teaching we experiment with the theatre genre of Object Theatre. We employ techniques from object theatre to challenge current thinking about product agency, movement and meaning, the spatial location, and the social settings of products. At the end of the project our graduate design students create a post-dramatic performance that engages an audience in experiencing and exploring the product concepts they create. Our experiences show that it helps us educate young designers in the abilities to take other perspectives than their own (in particular that of the ‘object’), and to ‘act before they …

Object Theatre In Design, Preben Friis, Merja Ryöppy, Jacob Buur Jun 2015

Object Theatre In Design, Preben Friis, Merja Ryöppy, Jacob Buur

Nordes Conference Series

In this workshop we will demonstrate a set of techniques from the post-dramatic genre of Object Theatre and discuss how they can enrich design practice and design research. The work brings together a design tradition of engaging objects in co-design and a theatre competence of improvising action with objects. With the participants we will inquire into: Object puppetry (exploring objects from ‘within’), Improvising movements (action before thought), Staging objects (context dependence), and Multi-stakeholder drama (object perspectives).

The aim of …

Game Feedback Techniques: Eliciting Big Surprises In Business Model Design, Sune Gudiksen Jun 2014

Game Feedback Techniques: Eliciting Big Surprises In Business Model Design, Sune Gudiksen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

One major design debate is how design thinking can be applied in non-traditional design contexts. A particular hot new area is business model design. When entering new design grounds, codesign and the direction of design games have proven beneficial in the past, especially when it comes to engaging a cross-disciplinary circle of stakeholders and reframing and proposing new scenarios. In early business model design workshops in which I experimented with design games, observations revealed two concerns. First, to create big surprises that could lead discussions to novel directions, there was a need for techniques supporting the game purpose during play. …

Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin Jun 2014

Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Artistic practice and education build on a long tradition of aesthetic critique and problem solving. This tradition has later on influenced also practice-led and practice-based research approaches centering on the artistic process. Although these research approaches depend on the processes and objects that essentially have not only cognitive but aesthetic qualities, the role of the aesthetics in these research processes still lacks an analytical discussion in this context. In this article we explore the process aesthetics in the context of artistic, practice-led research. Namely, we examine the potential of the concept of aesthetic engagement as a framework for understanding and …
