Defining The Value Of Educational Equilibrium For Immigrant And At-Risk Youths Through Art Education In The 2020s And Beyond, Clovis Benjamin Nelson

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

The purpose of this study is to explore the inefficiencies of a one-size-fits-all curricular structure that has no bearing on the anthropological behavior of unique learners. Little is known about cultural relevance in learning through artistic means such as the visual arts, especially for unique project-based learners. This paper is a methodological consideration of a specific visual arts teaching approach for global application in the effort of shaping a “world of many centers.” Attention is given to the natural principles of ecological psychology, identifying the construct of the anthropological respectability of indigenous voices globally, and clarifying related scientific perception-action. The …

Speculation Of The Purpose Of Life In 2050 From Kyoto: Case Study On Transition Design In Japan, Masaki Iwabuchi, Daijiro Mizuno

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

Japanese life and career situation have become opaque due to nationwide problems such as the collapse of lifetime employment, the aging society with declining birth rates, and the drop in GDP manifested in a reduction in international competitiveness. Statistics show that the younger generation of Japan has significantly lower ratings of self-confidence, willingness to contribute to society, and hopes for the future, compared to other nations. Under these circumstances, we aimed to speculate on a humane vision where everyone can live with a meaningful purpose (*ikigai* in Japanese) from the historical city of Kyoto, Japan. Using the theories underpinning Transition …

Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez Jun 2020

Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

The bridging design prototype (BDP) approach is a human-centred design method for individual designers and small organisations. BDPs are fully functional rapid prototypes that user communities accept to incorporate in real activities; while designers use them for learning about the community, the context, and the practice. Experimentation should not require the presence of designers. By functional, it means all features should operate. But, BDPs are not necessarily minimum viable products, as the digital or tangible materials with which they are built could have a limited lifespan. Informed by autonomous design, this reflection involved a meta-analysis of a project carried out …

This paper reflects on the STICH research project, an international research cooperation between Switzerland and India that investigated the topic of requirements of future design education by jointly exploring topic issues in the area of craft, design and social innovation. The cultural differences between these two countries allowed for an inquiry into the transformation of craft, design in new contexts of social innovation – and to discover similarities in the re-interpretation and significance of craft and design in the context of entirely different social challenges. The paper builds on existing theories of design education, crafts and design to propose future …

Prototyping A New Economy, Gerry Derksen, Zhabiz Shafieyoun Jul 2019

Prototyping A New Economy, Gerry Derksen, Zhabiz Shafieyoun

Learn X Design Conference Series

It is conceivable that capitalism and the new market economy as it currently operates is unsustainable despite the bullish opinions of businessmen and entrepreneurs. There are many obvious concerns surrounding an economy without money the most basic of which is the accounting of productivity. However, if we are seriously engaged in this thought experiment we must also consider two operations of the current system that seem to be most detrimental to societal and more recently, political constructs which are the accumulation, and transferability of money. Moderate restrictions have been placed on both operations but considering the involvement of business in …

Taking The Culture Out Of The Lab And Into The Office: A “Non-Lab” Approach To Public Service Transformation, Ryan Hum, Paul A. Thibaudeau

Learn X Design Conference Series

Over the years, “Innovation labs” have come and gone in public sector organizations. At Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, one low-key, co-design project over-delivered on client insights, service experience improvements and operational efficiencies. This case study shares one department’s success in embedding human-centered design into organizational culture by: competing against graduate design students, co-designing across the organization (from call agents, to policy, immigration officers, and communications), creating a design project alumni community, and adhering to rigorous measurement and experimentation. The case study will share opportunities and challenges that emerged from the process of embedding human-centered design (via a “non-innovation lab”) …

The View From Within: Design’S Voyage To Get A Seat At The Strategy Table, Suzan Boztepe Jun 2018

The View From Within: Design’S Voyage To Get A Seat At The Strategy Table, Suzan Boztepe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

It is often argued that design serves as an effective change agent in strategy formation. However, the question of how this actually occurs remains largely unexplored. Through case studies of five design consulting firms in Denmark, this paper examines how design gets involved in the making of strategy. The findings show that there are at least two paths to strategy-level work: First, design works its way to strategizing through repeated client engagement and trust building. That is, design consulting firms work with the same client over a long period of time, they gain trust of their clients, so the complexity …

Perspective: The Gist Of Public Tender For Service Design, Seungho Park-Lee, Oscar Person Jun 2018

Perspective: The Gist Of Public Tender For Service Design, Seungho Park-Lee, Oscar Person

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Governments around the world are increasingly formalising design as an innovative approach to renew public services. In this development, the capabilities of external service design consultancies often play an important part, which calls for new insights into how public organisations procure the expertise of consultancies and what contributions designers can make to public-sector organisations. In unravelling such insights, we review preliminary data from an ongoing case study of service design procurement practices in Finland. Our initial findings suggest that the types of work service design consultancies carry out for public-sector clients are dictated in part by the requirements set in …

Using Dynamic Capabilities In An Actionable Tool As A Vehicle To Initiate Design-Driven Innovation, Barenda Klitsie, Rebecca Price, Christine De Lille

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In order to become more innovative, corporations are increasingly turning to design- driven innovation capabilities. These capabilities are dynamic: they influence the way companies run their business and how companies create, capture and deliver value. Building design capabilities has proven difficult, given the tacit nature of design practice and the conflicting reasoning style of abduction that allows for the creative leap. However, if these enterprises don’t improve, they are in danger of losing their ability to add value to the market. This may result in loss of market-share, which may lead to job destruction and the loss of valuable knowledge …

Traces As Service Evidence, Spyros Bofylatos Jun 2018

Traces As Service Evidence, Spyros Bofylatos

ServDes Conference Series

In this paper, the idea of leveraging traces in service design for sustainability is presented. Physical evidence is an essential aspect of services as the service experience exists as a choreography of people, things and processes. These designed, tangible aspects of services play an important role in the overall service experience and at the same time act as affordances, leading the user through a desired service journey without interpersonal interactions. Viewing services in the context of actor network theory, as networks of humans and non-humans suggests that this service evidence act as a carrier of explicit knowledge relegated to it …
