Mathematical Properties That Influence Least Significant Change Of Body Composition And Bone Mineral Density Measured By Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Nadia Marie Ghassan Najm
All Theses
Introduction: Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans are the gold standard method for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) calculations for the assessment and measurement of bone health. More recently, DXA scans have become the common method for body composition assessments among clinicians and researchers alike, particularly for its ability to separate soft tissue into and lean mass. This study was designed to calculate the percent coefficient variation (%CV) to determine the least significant change (LSC), or the variability considered significant when measuring BMD, fat mass, and lean mass with a DXA scan. Methods: Thirty-six female and 6 male, aged 50.07 …

Primiparous Angus-cross cows (n = 38) were synchronized using a Co-Synch+CIDR protocol and inseminated with semen from one of two Angus sires. Animals were fed at 1.3 x (Control [CON]) or 0.55 x (Nutrient Restricted [NR]) of maintenance energy and protein requirements based on BW (NRC 2000). Diets were fed at either 1.3 x (Control [CON]) or 0.55 x (Nutrient restricted [NR]) of maintenance energy and crude protein values based on BW (NRC 1996). A subset of animals (n = 16) was fed either NR (n = 8) or C (n = 8) from d 30-110 of gestation. The remaining …
Preference Of Consumers Toward Non-Distorted Graphics On Full-Body Shrink Sleeve Labels, Nathan Bailey
Preference Of Consumers Toward Non-Distorted Graphics On Full-Body Shrink Sleeve Labels, Nathan Bailey
All Theses
Past research has indicated that shrink sleeves can lead to higher product trial rates, better long-term sales, and greater likelihood of brand loyalty. A pilot study and a primary experiment were conducted to investigate the significance of distortion and the ability of the Human Visual System (HVS) to recognize it in packaging design. Distortion works primarily in shrink film on which an image is printed, so these studies dealt only with reductive distortion. The pilot study aimed to identify the absolute threshold, or Just-Noticeable-Difference (JND) for a change from no stimulus, for simple polygons. The primary experiment focused on graphic …

Interactions Between Sleep Habits And Self-Control, June J. Pilcher, Drew M. Morris, Janet Donnelly, Hayley B. Feigl
Publications
Good sleep habits and effective self-control are important components of successful functioning. Unfortunately chronic sleep loss and impaired self-control are common occurrences for many individuals which can lead to difficulty with daily self-control issues such as resisting impulses and maintaining attentive behavior. Understanding how self-control is depleted and how good sleep habits may help replenish and maintain the capacity for self-control is an important issue. A sleep-deprived individual who has expended the necessary resources for self-control is at an increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, poor attentional capacity, and compromised decision making. To date, few studies have investigated how …

Excessive consumption of calories, protein, fat, and salt has been linked to obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and many other diseases. The nutrients provided to consumers by restaurant food, including calories, protein, fat, and salt, pose challenges for the health status of Americans and may fuel the obesity epidemic, contributing to otherwise preventable diseases. Chefs are in the unique position of creating healthier menu choices. Since many chefs may have limited knowledge of culinary nutrition, educating culinary arts students on applied nutrition is a viable strategy for improving the healthiness of restaurant menus, thereby improving the health of the population.

Phosphotransacetylase And Xylulose 5-Phosphate/Fructose 6-Phosphate Phosphoketolase: Two Eukaryotic Partners Of Acetate Kinase, Tonya Taylor
All Dissertations
Although acetate is a predominant metabolite produced by many eukaryotic microbes, far less attention has been given to acetate metabolism in eukaryotes than in bacteria and archaea. Acetate kinase (Ack), which catalyzes the reversible phosphorylation of acetate from ATP, is a key enzyme in bacterial acetate metabolism. Ack primarily partners with phosphotransacetylase (Pta), which catalyzes the generation of acetyl phosphate from acetyl-CoA, but can also partner with xylulose 5-phosphate/fructose 6-phosphate phosphoketolase (Xfp), which produces acetyl phosphate from either xylulose 5-phosphate or fructose 6-phosphate. The Ack-Pta pathway, found primarily in bacteria, is also present in lower eukaryotes such as the green …
